The sturdy new iPhone 5C is one of the two smartphones released by Apple last year. Released along with the iPhone 5S, the phone sports features and specifications that are quite similar to the iPhone 5, but available at a less expensive price and in refreshing colours.
The device’s colour is one of the most refreshing things in the iPhone 5C and strikes the user immediately as being “special.” Available in an assortment of colours like lime green, blue, yellow, pink and white, the iPhone 5C is captivating in terms of its looks. Just like the way the iPods were launched in various colour variants in the year 2012, Apple has released the iPhone 5C in colours that are alluring. This means that users do not have to choose between the standard colours provided by Apple, but choose the one that suits their tastes and preferences.
Design-wise, the phone measures 9mm in thickness and 132g in weight. This makes the 5C thicker and heavier than the earlier models of the iPhone. Besides the chassis and the minor modifications in the phone’s dimensions, there are no new features evident. Also, the hardware features like the buttons, speakers and ports are placed in the same places as that of in the iPhone 5.
The phone receives a sturdy and a hard look because of the body made of steel-reinforced frame. The plastic chassis is layered around it so that the phone is strong and does not appear to be cheap. Apple has also given the phone a glossy finish, making the colours look more vivid and shiny.
On paper, the iPhone 5C appears weak and inferior when compared to the other smartphones – specifically Android and Windows counterparts – in the market. But in terms of functionality, the phone is equally powerful as the others. Thought no new technical enhancements have been made in this smartphone, the custom 32-bit A6 processor at 1.3GHz and one GB of RAM function seamlessly to deliver optimum performance. Battery life is comparatively better as well, despite the fact that it is only powered by a 1510 mAh battery.
On the connectivity front, the 5C carries new LTE aerials that can cover more LTE bands than other smartphones in the market. Besides this, the phone sports a dual band wireless connectivity option, Bluetooth 4.0, and the AirDrop feature that allows users to share files with other Apple devices such as the iPhone 5, fourth generation iPad and the fifth generation iPod Touch.
The device runs on iOS 7, which was launched at the Worldwide Developers Conference in 2013. The OS includes some convenient features apart from the revamped user interface, and is amazingly fast in carrying out tasks. Two new voices (one mail and one female) have been included in Siri in the iOS 7, along with significant upgrades in integration with social media and other websites.
The iPhone 5C has a camera that sports an 8MP lens, similar to its predecessors. However, some of the changes that have been made here are that the cameras (both iSight and Facetime) now have better sensitivity to low light. This, in turn, makes the photograph appear better, regardless of being taken under low light conditions. While the rear camera is full HD and supports 1080p, the Facetime camera offers a resolution of 1.2MP and performs well under low light too. The front camera supports a maximum resolution of 720p.
Similar to the earlier iPhone models, the iPhone 5C has a 4 inch screen which is powered by Retina Display. The resolution of the screen is 640×1136 at 326 pixels per inch. The phone, as usual, offers incredible visual quality and, comparatively, offers better viewing angles and colour accuracy than the iPhone 5. Images, videos and playing games are just fantastic on this device, according to users.
When compared to the iPhone 5S that was released simultaneously, the iPhone 5C lacks some much-needed features like the A7 and M7. Further, the all-new security technology, called TouchID, has also been omitted in this one. The specialty of this feature is that it allows users to unlock and access their phones using their fingerprints. However, this does not deter the phone from being impeccable in its functioning. Given its price and colours, the phone is indeed a commendable attempt by Apple. Yet again, Apple proves its finesse at delivering quality, and shows that it can even handle materials like plastic to come up with a phone that is sturdy and tough.

Apple created iPhone 5c to bring in versatility to their otherwise homogenous range. The demographic target of Apple for these phones is youth, apparently. “For the colourful” Apple calls it, and it has been branded in such a way and we think they’ve done a pretty good job.
The 5c is ideal for a range of users and a lot of the inbuilt features such as social media compatibility, photo effects, HD video recording, voice activation system, Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth 4.0 are exceptionally handy. If Apple can drop the price tag another notch it could become a top seller.
Our biggest concern is the mere 8GB storage, we understand why Apple have done it to drop the price tag but is 8GB enough? Even average users can fill that quite quickly.
