Sony have seemingly struggled to find a place for themselves on the mobile market, creating a vast range of Xperia devices that covers every price point. Yet they have always struggled at the top of the market, competing with the big names, like Apple and Samsung. Their latest flagship release, the Xperia Z5 Premium might just be the phone that changes things, however. It’s the first 4K display mobile, and it really is stunning. Can Sony compete with the big boys? The Xperia Z5 Premium proves they can.
Why should you invest in a Z5 Premium? Well, there’s that 4K display, and, of course, tons of power and great performance specs. But there’s also an incredible camera set, and the fact that the Z5 is water resistant as well. If you want a top end flagship phone, then the Z5 Premium is going to be an amazing buying decision.
All of Sony’s Xperia phones look fairly similar, and the Z5 Premium is no exception. It’s got crisp, sharp corners and sleek edges, with little wasted space on the front panel. This is an aluminium frame with glass front and back panels, so it’s a little heavier than it looks, but feels very robust and secure in the hand.
Aside from it’s futuristic good looks, the Z5 Premium has some mind blowing internals. Loads of power and RAM, a true 4K display, and some breathtaking cameras to boot. Add in water resistance, which has become pretty standard for Sony recently, and you’re looking at a true flagship phone.
No, it’s not cheap, but then quality never is. With the Xperia Z5 Premium you’re getting, well, a premium phone as the name suggests. For those discerning customers that want the very best, the Z5 Premium is going to be the best bet.
Performance is always important, though particularly so at this price point, and the Z5 Premium won’t disappoint. It’s got octo core processing, running two quad core (1.5 GHz and 2.0 GHz) processors side by side, as well as 3 GB of RAM. This results in a device that’s extremely responsive, and very, very fast.
This is an Android device, as we expect these days from Sony, and it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, but will immediately upgrade to the new Android 7.0 Nougat. This gives you a few new features, like split screen, whilst retaining the intuitive interface that you know and love and all those customisation options.
Bottom line for performance? It’s second to none. This is a fast, responsive device, even when multi tasking. If you’re a high end, hard core phone user, then know that the Z5 Premium will take everything you throw at it and just ask for more.
The screen is going to be a big selling point on the Z5 Premium, but before we get to resolution, let’s talk size. It’s a 5.5 inch display, which gives you tons of space for typing and a great visual experience. However, using the Z5 Premium one handed isn’t particularly comfortable, and it’s a little large to put into the average pocket.
Now, resolution. This is the first 4K mobile display, and you’re getting 2160 x 3840 pixels, working out to a whopping 806 PPI. This is the sharpest, best defined screen on the market, bar none. It’s also an LCD screen, so colour reproduction is brilliant, and there’s IPS, so viewing angles are excellent as well.
From these specs it’s clear that the Xperia Z5 Premium does have one of the best displays on shelves today, and it’s a joy to behold. From HD video to high end video gaming, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the Z5 Premium’s display.
Given the stunning specs already mentioned you might be waiting for the compromise, but that certainly doesn’t come with the camera set, given that this is one of the best camera sets around. At the front you’ve got a 5.1 MP cam with HDR, which should be fine for video calling etc. But at the back, there’s even better.
The rear camera is a massive 23 MP camera (and that’s f/2.0, 24 mm, 1/2.3” sensor, if you’re techie). You get HDR, panorama, face detection, touch focus, phase detection auto focus and LED flash too, so all the bells and whistles here.
To make a long story short, the Z5 Premium takes amazing pictures. Full of detail, bright, colourful, natural, with cameras like these you can’t take a bad pic.
As a top end phone there are obviously tons of features on the Xperia Z5 Premium, and we can’t mention them all, but there are some things you should know. Firstly, the Z5 Premium is IP68 rated, meaning it’s water resistant in water up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes, so no problems with dropping it in the bath.
You’re getting a hefty 3430 mAh Li-Ion battery, so plenty of juice there. And when it comes time to charge, there’s quick charge 2.0 so you’ll go from 0 to 60% charge in thirty minutes. You also get stereo external speakers, for pretty good audio quality from a mobile phone.
