The Sony Xperia series has had its ups and downs, though to be fair, it’s one of the longest running phone series around. But after the disappointment of the Xperia Z3+, Sony have had to work hard to produce the kind of mobile consumers are expecting. Fortunately, they put their time in, and have come up with the fantastic new Z5 model. With slim, elegant looks, lots of power and some nice upgrades, the Z5 is a great mobile. Sony are once again at the top of their game.
What should you be looking forward to? The biggest selling point has to be the awesome camera specs, which will delight photo fans. But there’s also great performance, plenty of processing power, and some nice display specs too. If you’re on the hunt for a top end phone, then the Xperia Z5 should definitely make your list.
One Xperia looks very much like another, but the Xperia Z5 has been slimmed down and has a nice, thin profile when compared to its predecessors. It’s still got sharp edges and defined corners though. The frosted glass back panel is smooth to touch, and the vinyl corners do protect those sharp edges. All of this adds up to a phone that looks great, but that also fits nicely and securely into the hand.
It’s not all about looks, of course, but the Z5 doesn’t disappoint when you look under the hood either. There’s octo core processing power, so performance isn’t an issue, and that display has been made bigger too. Plus, you’re getting some of the best camera specs on the market right now.
The Sony Xperia Z5 might look like just another Xperia, but it’s got a nice series of upgrades, and is a powerful phone in its own right. If you’re looking for a phone that can do everything you need and more, then the Z5 is going to be an ideal choice.
Performance has to be paramount, so let’s take a look at those power specs first. This is an octo core device, running two quad core processors simultaneously. There’s a 2 GHz processor and a 1.5 GHz processor as well. But those together with a full 3 GB of RAM and you’re getting a phone that’s fast and responsive as well. No, it’s not the fastest around, but the Z5 comes extremely close to top of the list, and you’re not going to get any lag or freezing here, even when intensely multi tasking.
This is an Android device, as we’d expect from Sony at this point. You’ll be running the latest OS out of the box, which is to say 5.1 Lollipop. However, the release of Android M is imminent, and it’s likely that this device will be amongst the first to get that new update with all the stability and speeds that an update normally brings.
If you’re looking for performance, then look no further. The combination of that octo core processor, 3 GB of RAM and the latest Android OS means that the Xperia Z5 has top notch performance and great speeds.
Screen is pretty high on our list of priorities in a smart phone too, and the Xperia Z5 is sporting a nice 5.2 inch display. That doesn’t make the phone cumbersome, however, mostly thanks to the slimmed down form that means you can still use the Z5 one handed. And you’re getting a lot of room for not only videos and pictures, but also easy on screen typing.
When it comes to resolution, specs aren’t amazing, but they’re pretty good. This is a 1080 x 1920 pixel display, which gives you about 428 PPI. This results in a nice, sharp picture, with good colour reproduction and brightness, though they’re not the biggest screen specs around. This is an LCS screen with IPS technology, meaning great viewing angles.
For whatever you’re doing on screen the display specs on the Z5 should be more than good enough. Colours appear true and pictures clear, and that little bit of extra room when compared to a five inch screen really does make a difference.
The two cameras on the Z5 are probably going to be the main selling point for a lot of people, as well they should be. At the front there’s a 5.1 MP camera, which is pretty good for something that’s only going to be used for selfies and video calling.
The big action is at the rear, however, where you’ll find a huge 23 MP camera with incredible 5520 x 4140 resolution. You’re getting you fair share of features in there two, with phase detection autofocus, LED flash, panorama mode, HDR, and face detection as well.
When it comes to cameras, the specs on the Z5 are some of the best you can buy. For photographers this is going to be an awesome device, and you’re going to be taking some amazing pictures even for a high end phone.
We really do need to mention a couple of other things about the Xperia Z5 on top of what we’ve already discussed. Firstly, you are getting a fingerprint scanner here, which is the first time we’ve seen this tech from Sony. That gives you added security as well as the ability to use a digital wallet such as Android Pay.
Then there’s the battery life. Sony have made it their mission to create a mobile battery that will last two days with normal use. The Z5 doesn’t quite get there, unfortunately, but it’s still better than most other devices with a huge 2900 mAh battery on board, as well as a stamina mode for power saving and a screen that dims itself to save further juice.
You’ll get the regular Sony features as well, including some rather nice high res speakers, and remote play for your Play Station 4 too.

This is hands down one of the best mobiles that we’ve seen from Sony for a long time, and one that most consumers will be more than happy with. That great performance combined with the stylish exterior and awesome cameras is going to mean a device that satisfies even the more demanding of phone users.
Connectivity is more or less what you’d expect, with 3G, 4G, Bluetooth and WiFi. You’re getting some nice storage options though. The Z5 has 32 GB of built in memory, but it also has an SD card slot that can take up to 200 GB of external storage, which is very impressive.
Any complaints? Not really A little more screen resolution would be good, especially when comparing the Z5 to the likes of a Samsung Galaxy. But we’re kind of willing to give up a bit of resolution in order to get our hands on those awesome cameras, so it’s a trade off. On the whole though, the Xperia Z5 is a fantastic device, and a great buy!
