Sony’s Xperia series is pretty far reaching, including all kinds of devices. But the release of the Xperia Z5 Compact, younger brother to the new flagship Z5, shows that there’s definitely room for one more. The Compact is, as you’d expect, pretty small, but that doesn’t mean you sacrifice power and performance, which is a very nice surprise. Sony have created the ultimate in small phones, and one that’s a fantastic device no matter the size.
What should you be looking forward to here? Well, there’s solid octo core processing power, despite the fact that this is a compact model. You’re also getting some of the best camera specs around at the moment. If you want something that’s portable without making compromises, then the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is one of the best small phones we’ve seen bar none.
The signature sharp lines and clean corners of the Xperia range are the first thing that you notice on the Z5 Compact, and this is one good looking phone. Sony have ditched the plastic rim seen on earlier Compact models, and the Z5 Compact sports a metal rim with the same frosted glass back plate seen on the regular Z5 model. That means a feeling of quality and sturdiness that was lacking in earlier Compact devices, and along with the vinyl corners, make for a phone that’s going to be hard wearing.
But the Z5 Compact isn’t just a pretty face. It’s carrying octo core processing around under that shell, and a pretty mean set of cameras as well, not to mention the fact that the whole device is waterproof and dust proof. That means you’re getting a stylish and a productive mobile.
Yes, there are plenty of Xperias on the market, there are even plenty of Compact phones on the market. But if you’re looking to combine small size with awesome power, then the Xperia Z5 Compact is going to be the only choice for you.
All too often a small phone means diminished power, but that simply isn’t the case with the Z5 Compact. In fact you’re getting massive octo core processing power in the shape of two quad core processors (a 2 GHz model and a 1.5 GHz model). You’re also getting a solid 2 GB of RAM. That all adds up to pretty close to top end phone speeds and responsiveness, which is very impressive for such a small device.
This is an Android, as we expect from Sony at this point. Out of the box you’re looking at the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop version, but with this being a new release and the launch of Android M coming soon you’re likely to see an upgrade on that in the near future. This will mean even more speeds and added stability and security.
When it comes to performance, the Z5 Compact just can’t be faulted. It’s speedy, responsive, great at multi tasking, and hits benchmarks almost as well as it’s older brother the regular Z5. You won’t be making any compromises here.
Alright, this is a compact model, you can’t expect to see amazing screen specs here. However, display specs are actually pretty good, all things considered. That screen measures in at 4.6 inches, making for a phone that’s very portable and simple to use with one hand, whilst still giving you enough space to type on screen comfortably.
Resolution does leave a little to be desired, however. You’re getting a 720 x 1280 pixel display, working out at about 323 PPI. That’s not as bad as it might sound, given the small display size though. In reality, colours look great, and the display is pretty sharp and clear. It’s also an LCD screen with IPS, so you’re getting great viewing angles here.
Compact devices obviously don’t have the larger screens of flagship phones, but when it comes to smaller mobiles the Z5 Compact has pretty competitive specs. And all this comes down to user experience, and we found the Z5 Compact to be fine for anything that we did on it.
Okay, let’s get to one of the most surprising features on the Z5 Compact, those cameras. These are literally some of the best mobile cameras around. At the front you’re getting a 5.1 MP video calling camera, which is more than good enough for those Facebook pictures.
At the rear, however, you’re getting a full, massive 23 MP camera, with an absolutely unbelievable 5520 x 4140 resolution. Plus, there’s the whole bunch of camera features: panorama mode, LED flash, phase detection autofocus, face detection and so on.
We say this is surprising because Sony have given the Z5 Compact the same set of awesome cameras that the flagship Z5 model has, so you’re getting really top quality gear here. If you love taking pics, then the Z5 Compact is going to be your dream phone!
The Z5 Compact isn’t done yet though, there are a couple more things that you really need to know. The first is that it does have a fingerprint scanner, which is unusual for Sony, but this is a feature that will not only give you more security but that will also allow you to use the Android Pay digital wallet payment system.
Then there’s the battery. The 2700 mAh battery on the Z5 Compact might not be as big as the 2900 mAh battery on the regular Z5, but because there’s a smaller screen to power you’re getting even better battery life. This is one of the best compact batteries around, and that, along with some smart battery saving options that Sony have included, is going to mean less battery charging for you, which has to be a good thing!

We’re going to go ahead and say that the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact might just be the best small phone that we’ve ever seen. From its immense power to its great cameras and amazing battery life this is no compromise. If you want something portable then the Z5 Compact gives you nearly all the features of a flagship phone in a much smaller body.
Connectivity is pretty much what you’d expect: WiFi and Bluetooth, 3G and 4G. But there is a nice surprise when it comes to storage. Internally, you’re getting 32 GB, which is pretty good. But the Z5 Compact also has an SD card slot that will give you up to a whopping 200 GB of extra external storage. You can’t say fairer than that.
Alright, complaints time. Yes, we’d like better screen resolution, we’re not going to lie. We’d really like an HD screen on the Z5 Compact. However, we are willing to make that one small sacrifice in order to get those great cameras and that unbelievable power. If you want a portable, small mobile that doesn’t force you to give up performance specs, then the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact is by far the best of the bunch. This is a great little phone, and one that you’re going to love!
