Fancy getting your hands on one? Then start by checking out our great deals on the iPhone 7 Plus, 256 GB in black below.
Given that Apple make great phones and great tablets, it should be no surprise that they also make pretty good phablets. And whilst the older iPhone 6S Plus was a good start, it’s with the new iPhone 7 Plus that Apple’s phablet line has really come into its own. With a market niche that’s dominated by Android, Apple are out to prove that they too can play the game, and with the iPhone 7 Plus they might just have a winner.
What are the major selling points? Obviously there’s great performance and beautiful styling. But there’s also an incredible camera set, vastly improved audio and sound quality, and even water resistance. Add in a bigger battery for more juice, and you’re looking at a true top of the line Apple device.
There’s no mistaking that this is an iPhone. It’s got a slim profile, sexy lines, gentle curves. And the build, metal and glass unibody, manages to be both light and yet robust and firm in the hand. But the old antennae bands are gone, replaced by a smooth black glass plate at the rear. And that home button is subtly different too, gone are the physical clicks, replaced by a vibrating haptic feedback pad.
Styling and design aside, there are some very nice specs here. Plenty of speed, of course, and a new OS version, but also a camera re-design, a bigger battery, improved sound and audio, and even water resistance as standard.
All iPhones are a big investment, and this is no exception, but quality demands to be paid for. Even the most demanding of buyers will agree that the iPhone 7 plus ticks all the boxes and then some.
Since the 7 Plus is a phablet, that screen is all important, and you’re getting a full 5.5 inches of real estate here. Sure, that’s tons of room for your watching, reading, or typing, but it does also mean that this isn’t a one handed phone, nor does it slide into the average pocket, so beware! The display also features the same 3D touch tech as the older 6S model.
Resolution wise you’re getting HD, though not anywhere close to 4K. There’s 1080 x 1920 pixels, so around 401 PPI, which whilst it’s not the sharpest screen around is actually pretty good. The reason those low numbers aren’t that disappointing is because this is an LED backlit LCD screen, so colour reproduction is second to none, and because there’s IPS giving fantastic viewing angles as well.
The display on the 7 Plus is very, very good, whatever the numbers might imply, and though there are better screens around, most people really aren’t going to see a difference. Whether you’re video watching, gaming, or emailing, you’ll be more than happy with this giant display!
Moving on now to performance, and though we don’t get exact numbers from Apple the 7 Plus seems to be running somewhere around a 2.2 GHz quad core processor. What we know for sure is that there’s the new A10 Fusion chip set, and 3 GB of RAM too. Put all that into the mix and you’ve got a speedy phone that’s very responsive to user input.
As an Apple product this is obviously an iOS device, and you’ve got the new iOS10 version out of the box. This is the OS that you’re familiar with, so it’s nice and intuitive, but there are a few new things too. Menus are less crowded, lock screen notifications are better than ever, and the new “raise to wake” feature means you can simply pick up your phone to wake it automatically.
Performance wise there are no complaints here, and even high end users are going to find the 7 Plus more than fast enough to multitask without lag. If you want a phone that can do everything you need and then ask for more, you’re looking at it!
Photographers rejoice! The camera set on the 7 Plus is absolutely brilliant. At the front you’re getting a cool 7 MP cam (complete with HDR and auto face detection), which should be more than enough resolution for selfies and video calling. But it’s the rear cam that’s the main talking point.
At the back there’s not one, but two 12 MP sensors. This is the famous dual cam, and those two sensors mean you can zoom in and out without losing image quality, giving you more of a DSLR feel to things. You get simultaneous 4K video recording and 8 MP picture taking, as well as HDR, panorama mode, optical zoom, and a new quad LED flash system that makes low light level pictures as bright as day.
If you’re into your mobile photography, then the iPhone 7 Plus is going to be a great choice for you. Pictures here are flawless, and you’ll love the easy to use camera interface software as well.
There are a few other things that warrant a mention here. Firstly, there’s the lack of headphone jack. Yes, you read that right (though Apple provide an adaptor so you can still use your regular headphones, or you can opt for their wireless ear buds). Headphones now plug into the lightening charger port, where faster data transfer means better sound quality. Do be aware that this means you can’t charge your phone and listen to music at the same time though!
On the subject of sound, you get real stereo sound with dual external speakers, as opposed to the more traditional mono speaker. You get tons more battery life, despite the big screen, with the 7 Plus promising up to 21 hours of use per charge. And lastly, this is a water resistant phone, its IP67 rating meaning that it can safely be submerged in up to a metre of water for up to half an hour.

With so many large screened phablets to choose from it can be a difficult buying decision. But the new iPhone 7 Plus with it’s great performance, awesome cameras, bigger battery, fantastic sound quality and all new water resistant casing has to be one of the best of the bunch. If you want a premium, big screen phone, then this is the perfect choice.
As for connectivity, you get WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G, along with support for extra LTE bands for faster 4G speeds. You’re also getting a massive 256 GB of memory, which is a ton, though you can’t add more storage since there’s no SD card slot. Apple do give you an iClous account for online storage though.
Okay, so, any complaints? Nothing too major. We’d like a little higher screen resolution, but in truth the display looks better than the numbers imply. The haptic home button took a little getting used to as well. But on the whole we think that this is a fantastic device. If you want a top end, big screened phone, then the iPhone 7 Plus is our top choice.
