Apple released their first phablet just last year with the iPhone 6 Plus, and the 6S Plus is this year’s upgrade. The older model might not have been quite the hit that Apple were expecting, but the good news is that the 6S Plus is a whole lot better. With upgrades across the board, this is one killer phablet, and it’s got everything you could possibly want in a new device. Could it be that it’s second time the charm for Apple? We think it could. Why should you want a 6S Plus? That display really is incredible, with new 3D touch technology and amazing picture quality too. But there’s also some nice camera upgrades, and a whole lot more speed and power as well. You’re going to be spending big bucks here, but the 6S Plus really is worth it, it’s the best phablet around.
Apple styling is unmistakeable, and the 6S Plus is no exception. Lines are sleek, corners are rounded, and there’s a minimalistic feel to the whole device. This is a little chubbier than the regular 6 Plus, thanks to the new screen tech, but that just makes it feel sturdier. Again, we’re seeing a full metal and glass unibody build, and that gives a real premium feel to the 6S Plus. Looks aside internals are pretty impressive too. There’s that much hyped 3D touch display, which truly is amazing, as well as camera upgrades, a chip set upgrade for more speed, and some nice little extra features thrown in for good measure. Combining power, performance and aesthetics, this is one of the best phablets we’ve seen on the market. Yes, it’s a big investment, but it’s also very worth it. If you want the best, it’s going to be the iPhone 6S Plus.
Obviously, you want great performance here, and you’re getting it. The 6S Plus is running something along the lines of a dual core 2 GHz processor (Apple are notoriously secret about things like this, so we can’t be sure). But it’s that A9 chip set that’s important. Apple says that the A9 is up to 70% faster than the A8, and honestly, we could feel the difference. There’s 2 GB of RAM as well, making for a device that’s not just speedy but that’s also responsive as well. Apple products run iOS, and the 6S Plus is no exception. You’re getting the latest operating system version in iOS9, which is as familiar and intuitive as older versions. There are some nice tweaks though, like the addition of low power mode (to save battery), and a new “back to previous app” icon (to make phone navigation easier than ever). In short, when it comes to performance even power users are going to be more than happy. The iPhone 6S Plus is snappy, responsive and runs multiple apps simultaneously with ease, and that’s all we could ask for.
You might have been wondering what a 3D touch display is, and it’s tough to describe. Basically, the display is more sensitive and can differentiate between a touch and a push and react differently to each, giving you more options. Think of it like the right and left click buttons on your mouse and you get the right idea. This is admittedly odd at first, but actually ends up being very useful. The 6S Plus sports a 5.5 inch display, which is more than enough for easy typing and great viewing, but it’s tough to use one handed and won’t slide easily into your pocket. For resolution we’re looking at 1080 x 1920 pixels, making somewhere around 401 PPI. What’s important here is that this is a Retina display though, plus it’s LED backlit and has IPS. All of this together means that this is a flawless display. Colours are rich and true, viewing angles are perfect, images are crisp, sharp and focussed. For our money this is the best display around, even without that 3D touch technology. Add that in though, and you’re getting a real stunner of a screen, and one that’s a pleasure to look at.
Most of us use our phones for picture taking these days, so you’ll be glad to hear that there’s been a full set of camera upgrades. Up front there’s a 5 MP video calling camera with screen flash, which just means that the display lights up to act as a flash for the camera. At the back there’s a surprising 12 MP camera (we say surprising because Apple have been reliant on 8 MP cameras for a while now). You’re getting a heap of features here too, with optical image stabilisation, 4609 x 2592 resolution, 4K video recording, dual LED flash and phase detection autofocus as well. Long story short: the 6S Plus takes fantastic pictures. Pros and amateurs alike will be happy with photo quality here, and the camera interface is a cinch to use as well.
We can’t talk about the 6S Plus without mentioning a few other things as well. Siri has had some work done, and now is more capable than ever, able to respond to more complex demands and questions. You’ll be getting a fingerprint scanner too, so there’s that little bit extra security for your phone. Plus, there’s access to Apple Pay, which is Apple’s new digital payment and wallet service, so that’s pretty convenient. Finally, we are fans of the new camera mode that Apple are calling Live Photo. This allows the simultaneous taking of a picture and video. The camera records a 3 second video, and right in the middle snaps a photo, leaving you with a still picture and a neat sort of moving picture as well.

The iPhone 6S Plus is pretty much as great as they come. It ticks all the boxes in terms of power, performance and looks as well. The combination of the new fast chip set, 3D touch display and great cameras mean that this is arguably the best phablet on shelves just at the moment.
What about connectivity then? There’s the usual WiFi, Blutooth, 3G and 4G, but advanced LTE should see you getting some faster mobile data speeds. You’re getting 64 GB of internal memory, which is a fair amount. You’ll want to keep an eye on how you use that space though, since there’s no SD card slot and you can’t add extra memory.
Alrighty, what about complaints? And… we don’t really have any. The price tag is a bit steep, but you pay for quality and cutting edge tech. Normally we don’t like a lack of SD card slot, but 64 GB should be plenty of memory for most people. We actually love the iPhone 6S Plus, it’s a fantastic device, and one we’d be proud to own. If you’re shopping for a phablet, then the 6S Plus should be high on your list!
