Just last year we saw the first phablet from Apple, the iPhone 6 Plus, and already we’ve got a new model, can it really be worth it? Absolutely. With a whole set of upgrades from chip set to cameras, the iPhone 6S Plus is streets ahead of the original 6 Plus. Apple make hands down some of the best mobile and tablet devices on the market, so it’s only common sense that their phablet line will be equally great. The 6S Plus just proves that Apple are king of the hill once again. Why do you want a 6S Plus? There are literally dozens of reasons. Brand new cameras mean pics are better than ever, and the new A9 chip set means that this is the fastest of the iPhone line. And then there’s that beautiful 3D touch screen. Combine all these things and you’re getting a phone that’s powerful, fast, and beautiful as well.
Apple styling is unmistakeable, and the iPhone 6S Plus has the sleek lines, minimalist look and rounded corners that you’re so familiar with. It’s also a little thicker than before, due to the new screen tech, but that, in our opinion, just makes it more robust. You’re getting a unibody build, completely glass and metal, so materials are top quality, and hand feel is very premium. Appearances aside, there’s a lot to be excited about here. From a new A9 chip set that gives the 6S Plus super fast speeds, to camera upgrades, and, how could we forget, that much hyped new 3D touch display. Mix together all these elements and you’re getting a mobile that’s second to none. Power, performance, speed, looks, the iPhone 6S Plus really does have it all. It’s going to cost you, but it’s a very worthy investment.
You might be wondering what this 3D touch display is all about, so let’s start there. In basic terms the screen is highly sensitive and can therefore detect the difference between you touching it or pressing it and reacts in two different ways. This is kind of the same as the right and left buttons on your mouse or trackpad. You getting a whole new level of functionality here, and just more options. That aside, this is a 5.5 inch screen, so there’s tons of room here for typing and viewing, though one handed use isn’t really possible. Resolution is up next, and this is a 1080 x 1920 pixel screen, giving you around 401 PPI. That doesn’t mean too much though, since this is a Retina display, complete with IPS and LED backlighting. Combine all those things together and you’ve got perfection. Colours are flawlessly reproduced, images are sharp and clear, and viewing angles are great too. This is a fantastic screen just from the point of view of picture quality, but adding in that 3D touch function means that this is one of the best displays we’ve ever seen. HD video and high end gaming look great on the 6S Plus.
You’re looking for great performance, and the 6S Plus delivers in spades. Apple rarely release real numbers, but the 6S Plus is running something akin to a dual core 2 GHz processor. That’s not too important though, what is important is that new A9 chip set, which Apple say make the iPhone 6S Plus up to 70% faster than the original 6 Plus. There’s 2 GB of RAM as well, so you’re getting something that’s not just fast, but that’s also very, very responsive. Yes, this is iOS, obviously, and you’re getting the new iOS9 version here. Essentially, not a lot has changed, looks and user interface are more or less what you already know. There are a couple of new things though. A low power mode should help save some of that battery juice, and a “back to previous app” icon should make phone navigation that much easier. Want great performance? You’re getting it. This is not just the fastest iPhone around, it’s also one of the fastest phones on the market. Even power users should be more than satisfied with speeds and responsiveness on the 6S Plus.
Apple have finally given us the updated camera set that we’ve all been demanding, and we’re seeing some very nice specs here now. At the front there’s a 5 MP camera, which has screen flash, letting the screen of the phone light up to act as a flash for the camera. But the main event is at the back, where there’s now a 12 MP camera (Apple had been relying on those 8 MP cameras for far too long) with a bunch of nice features. You’re getting serious 4609 x 2592 resolution here, along with things like 4K video recording, phase detection autofocus, optical image stabilisation and dual LED flash. The iPhone 6S Plus just takes great photos, clear, focussed and bright. If you depend on your mobile for snapping, then the 6S Plus is the perfect choice.
What else does the 6S Plus have to offer? Siri, the sarcastic digital assistant, has had a little work done. She can now respond to more complex and complicated questions and commands, making her that much more useful. There’s a new camera mode here too, which is pretty cool. Called Live Photo it allows you to take a video and photo simultaneously. You get a 3 second video, with a picture taken right in the middle of that, resulting in a still photo and a kind of moving photo as well. Lastly, there’s a fingerprint scanner for a little added security, as well as access to Apple Pay, the new digital wallet and payment service..

There are many phablets around these days, but none that have quite the combination of features of the iPhone 6S Plus. Great speeds, good looks, lots of power, solid cameras, and a cool new 3D touch display with excellent picture quality, what more cold you ask for?
In terms of connectivity, you get the usual, with 3G, 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth. Advanced LTE does mean that you should get slightly faster mobile data speeds though. Memory wise you’re looking at 64 GB of built in storage, which is pretty good, but there’s no SD card slot so you can’t add any external storage should you need it.
Right, so what don’t we like? Usually we want an SD car slot, but 64 GB of memory is a lot, so we’re not going to be petty. Price here is a bit high, but it’s an Apple product and you’re paying for that branding, and to be fair getting a device that high quality and in high demand. All in all we love the iPhone 6S Plus, and we think you will too. It’s just got everything we look for in a phone!
