Apple are fairly new to the phablet market, and the iPhone 6S Plus is only their second device. But given that they make great phones and tablets, it’s hardly surprising that the 6S Plus is already one of the best phablets around. Completely upgraded from the original phablet (the iPhone 6 Plus), the 6S Plus has a lot to give. Legendary Apple styling meets great power and performance specs, Apple have done it again. The 6S Plus is a simply fantastic mobile. Why should you be dying to get a 6S Plus? There’s an awe inspiring new 3D touch display, for a start. But there’s also top of the line performance, some great new cameras, and a whole heap of internal memory. If you’re in the market for a new phablet device, then you really can’t go wrong with Apple’s new 6S Plus.
This just looks like an iPhone. It’s got sleek lines, sexy curved corners, and a general minimalist feel to it. However, the 6S Plus is a tad thicker than usual, due to that added new screen tech, but that really just makes it sturdier in the hand. You’re getting a full metal and glass unibody build, so the 6S Plus is nice and light, as well as carrying a very premium feel to it. Apart from the stunning looks, you’re getting some stunning internals as well. There’s that new A9 chip set for faster than lightening speeds, there’s a brilliant new 3D touch display, there’s some upgraded cameras, and even a whole ton of internal memory. Put all of these things together and you’ve got a device that looks great, feels great and acts great. The iPhone 6S Plus checks all the boxes and then some. Looking for the best phablet around? That could well be the iPhone 6S Plus…
So, what is this 3D touch thing really all about? It’s tough to describe, but basically the screen is ultra sensitive and can tell the difference between you touching an icon and pressing an icon, and it then reacts differently to each. This gives you double the options when using your touch screen, in the same way as, say, the right and left click buttons on your computer mouse. It’s a little odd at first, but actually turns out to be very useful. Size wise you’re getting 5.5 inches, so comfortable for typing and viewing, but not great for one handed use. Resolution is 1080 x 1920, giving about 401 PPI, but that’s not really that important. What is important is that this is a Retina display, and one with LED backlighting and IPS. In real terms that means that you’re getting amazing picture quality, sharp, focussed, with great viewing angles and colour reproduction. The screen on the 6S Plus is close to flawless, and for picture quality alone gets our vote for best display on shelves right now. Add in some cool 3D touch tech, and we’re really sold!
A great phone needs great performance, and you’re definitely getting that here. Apple don’t really release processor numbers, but it looks like the 6S Plus runs something like a dual core 2 GHz CPU. What’s important here though is the A9 chip set, which is apparently up to 70% faster than the old A8 set, and that’s pretty noticeable, especially when booting up. You’re getting 2 GB of RAM as well, so the 6S Plus isn’t just fast, it’s also very responsive. Obviously you’re looking at an iOS device, and you’re running the new iOS9 version. In looks and use not a lot has changed, so you’ll feel immediately comfortable here, though there are a few new features. Low power mode will mean saving battery juice, for example, and then a nice new “back to previous app” icon will mean easier navigation. Performance specs here are excellent. The 6S Plus is super speedy, it’s great at multi tasking, it’s very responsive, and there’s no lag at all, even when running multiple apps simultaneously.
One surprise on the 6S Plus is that Apple have upgraded the camera set, something that hasn’t happened for a long while. The front camera is a 5 MP video calling cam, with screen flash (which lets the display light up to act as a flash for the camera). Round at the back there’s now a 12 MP camera (not an 8 MP as was standard for Apple), and one with some nice features thrown in. It’s got amazing 4609 x 2592 pixel resolution, which is very impressive, along with things like optical image stabilisation, phase detection autofocus, 4K video recording and dual LED flash. If, like most people, you depend on your phone for snapping pics, then the 6S Plus will do you proud. Photos are bright, clear and very, very good.
There are a few other things worthy of note on the 6S Plus. Apple’s digital assistant Siri has had an upgrade too, and she can now handle more complex questions and commands, though she’s as sarcastic as ever. We’re digging a new camera mode too. Called Live Photo this will let you simultaneously take a picture and video. The video is a brief 3 seconds, with the picture taken right in the middle, which results in you getting a still photo and a cute sort of moving photo as well. Last on the list, you are getting a fingerprint scanner, pretty standard for Apple these days, but it does give you a bit more security. Oh, and there’s Apple Pay as well, the new digital wallet and payment service.

There’s a lot to love about the new iPhone 6S Plus. With its fast chip set, awesome performance specs, amazing 3D touch screen as well as a decent camera set, this is a phablet that’s got a lot to give. And it’s got that extra screen space too, which just makes it all the easier to use, and all the more desirable.
Connectivity wise you get the normal options: 3G, 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth, but advanced LTE should mean you see faster data speeds here. Now the good part. Internally, you’re getting a massive 128 GB of storage space, which is more than enough for anyone. There’s no SD card slot though, so you can’t have any extra storage.
Any complaints here? Usually we complain about lack of SD card slot, but with a 128 GB internal memory that would be silly. The price tag is steep on the 6S Plus, but then you’re getting a premium device, so what do you expect? The truth of the matter is that we love the new iPhone 6S Plus. It’s got everything we desire in a phablet, and it’s one of the best devices around right now.
