"Was good until now"

Tesco mobile has given people free credit for 3 months due to COVID 19. Why haven't ID mobile done the same?

"Good backup SIM"

I use iD mobile as a backup SIM, costs me £3 a month and has come in handy when my O2 signal is weak. They use Three and it's better in some areas. Happy with the service.

"Great so far"

Great so far. I signed up with ID about 4 months ago on the £5 per month plan and I am very pleased that I made the decision to move from an old PAYG plan. Number moved over without any issues & billing has been ok. I have unlimited texts & 500 minutes per month which is easily enough for my usage and I also have 1gb mobile data but I don't really use that much so it keeps rolling over. Thanks.

"Great network"

Great mobile phone service from ID with a well designed app to check on your account. The rollover data is a great feature as I go months where I don't use much. The only let down for me is signal strength in my area, but on the whole, ID are great value for money.

"Worst Network? Probably"

I naively thought there can't be anything worse as regards internet speeds than giffgaff. And so I just transferred my number to iD. What a mistake!!! Where I was getting 1 MB/s on giffgaff, I am now getting 300 kB/s down and 90 kB/s up on iD, despite technically a HSPA+ connection with maximum signal strength within Greater London.

Of course, it is not my handset's fault as it easily clocks over 5MB/s on its second SIM, naturally on a different network.

Why two stars and not one? Because iD mobile was even worse when I tried it two years ago (they cut my number off then despite being well within my plan limits, saying that I exceeded the £5 cap making an international call; and told me my number would be restored in a months' time). I didn't last even a week then, moving to giffgaff for two subsequent years.

Now with these speeds, not much faster than 2.5G, I am not sure I will again last a week with iD.

"Worst Network"

Good prices but poor coverage and shocking customer service!

Our In-Depth ID Mobile Review - The Best and Worst Bits About ID Mobile

iD Mobile is a mobile service provider owned and operated by Carphone Warehouse. Whilst iD do offer their own contracts, they do not own their own mobile infrastructure, meaning they use the infrastructure of big name operator Three to provide service. You’ll find plenty of flexible options for service from iD Mobile!

The Pros and Cons of Using iD Mobile

There are both good points and bad points about going with iD Mobile as your service provider. So before we get into a detailed look at their offering, here are the essential things you need to know:

Pros

  • Service is relatively cheap when compared to other operators, meaning you could get a good deal
  • Solid choice of plans and PAYG options, meaning lots of flexibility
  • Contract capping and data rollover options mean extra savings and no unexpected bills

Cons

  • Not too many options for extras, so don’t expect too much
  • No mobile tethering allowed on iD Mobile contracts or PAYG SIMs
  • Limited PAYG bundles available, not ideal if you’re a big phone user and want the convenience of PAYG

Coverage with iD Mobile

As we mentioned above, iD Mobile uses Three’s network to provide service, so you’ll get the same coverage as Three customers get. This means around 97% coverage for 3G signals and about 64% coverage for 4G signals. This is fairly good, though not as good as coverage from EE, for example. Three, and therefore iD Mobile, do NOT support 2G service (which shouldn’t be a problem unless you have a very old phone). It’s always a good plan to check service in your local area using the coverage checker on iD Mobile’s website to ensure you’re going to get a good reception before signing up!

Packages with iD Mobile

There are a couple of options with iD Mobile, you can either get a traditional SIM Only contract (or a contract with a phone, which we’ll get to later), or go PAYG. There are a fair few options though, so let’s check them all out.

SIM Only Contracts

iD Mobile offers 30 day rolling SIM Only contracts. These contracts automatically renew every 30 days but can be cancelled at the end of any period. Do be aware that if you choose to add a handset to your deal your SIM Only contract will automatically renew 24 times (for two years) and cannot be cancelled during that time. There are tons of options to choose from, however, and ALL iD Mobile contracts include unlimited text messages:

  • 150 minutes, 500 MB of mobile data for £3.99 a month
  • 500 minutes, 1 GB of mobile data for £5 a month
  • 1200 minutes, 2.5 GB of mobile data for £7 a month
  • 500 minutes, 3 GB of mobile data for £8 a month
  • 300 minutes, 9 GB of mobile data for £10 a month
  • 500 minutes, 5 GB of mobile data for £10 a month
  • Unlimited minutes, 8 GB of mobile data for £12.50 a month
  • Unlimited minutes, 10 GB of mobile data for £15 a month
  • Unlimited minutes, 20 GB of mobile data for £20 a month

Pay As You Go

iD Mobile also offer traditional pay as you go service in the form of pre-paid no credit check SIM only deals, meaning you pay before using your minutes/texts/data. This prevents overspending and means you never get a phone bill. Current rates with iD Mobile are:

  • 3p per calling minute (including voicemail calling)
  • 2p per text message (30p per MMS)
  • 1p per MB of mobile data

If you’re a bigger user, you can also opt to buy a 30-day bundle with your PAYG credit. This gives you a limit of minutes, texts, and data that you can use during the 30 day validity period. However, unlike with limits on a contract, with bundles, you get the convenience of paying before you use service, so again, no phone bills. The currently available bundles are:

  • 150 minutes, unlimited texts, 500 MB of mobile data for £5
  • 500 minutes, unlimited texts, 4 GB of mobile data for £10
  • 1000 minutes, unlimited texts, 8 GB of mobile data for £15

Credit Expiry

As you would expect, 30-day bundles expire after 30 days. Regular PAYG credit is valid for 365 days with iD Mobile, after which it will disappear. However, iD Mobile does require that you use your phone once every 90 days to keep the SIM card active. Failure to do so will mean that your SIM no longer works!

Extras and Features

There aren’t a lot of extras and features with iD Mobile. However, there are a couple of important things that you should know about:

Spending Caps

By default, all iD Mobile contracts come with a £5 spending cap. Once you have used up your monthly allotment of minutes/texts/data you will only be able to use £5 of extra credit (calculated using standard PAYG rates) before service is cut off. This is designed to stop unexpected mobile bills, and if you wish to remove or increase the spending cap you’ll need to call iD Mobile customer service.

Data Rollover

iD Mobile does employ data rollover on their contracts. Any unused data from month A is rolled over and can be used in month B (data from month A cannot be used in month C though, since there’s a one month limit). This could give you extra savings.

Comparison to Other Networks

Prices with iD Mobile are extremely low when compared to other networks, meaning this could be a good choice if you’re on a budget. Their £5 SIM only package (500 minutes, unlimited text, 1 GB of data) is the cheapest around (the next closest is GiffGaff which gives you 150 minutes, 500 texts, 500 mb of data). Their £10 contract is also the cheapest around (300 minutes, unlimited texts, 9 GB of data, compared to the next cheapest Vodafone with unlimited minutes and texts but only 6 GB of data).

When it comes to big, more expensive contracts though, iD Mobile doesn’t do quite so well. Their £15 bundle gives you only 10 GB of data, whilst the same contract from Three gives you 12 GB of data, for example. The lesson? For small contracts, iD Mobile is a great, cheap option. For larger contracts, you may need to look elsewhere.

Handsets with iD Mobile

You do have the option of adding a phone to your iD Mobile contract. However, be aware that those 30-day rolling contracts will have to be renewed 24 times (for two years) in order to pay for your phone. The prices of handsets per month will depend on which phone you choose.

Wifi Calling and WiFi Hotspots

iD Mobile does offer WiFi calling (meaning you can make calls over WiFi even when you don’t have network coverage), but only on select handsets. You’ll need to check out their website to find out if your phone is one of those allowed to make WiFi calls. You do not, however, get access to any free WiFi hotspots with iD Mobile, so you’ll be dependent on WiFi from cafes and restaurants or mobile data when you’re out and about.

Mobile Tethering

Lastly, iD Mobile do NOT allow mobile tethering on any of their plans. So if you’re looking to use your mobile data to get another device online then you’re going to need to choose another network.

Bottom Line

If you want a cheap, flexible mobile contract, then iD Mobile’s 30 day rolling contracts are an easy choice. If you’re looking at PAYG services iD Mobile are also a good choice, though GiffGaff does save you a little more cash. Big phone users will probably be better off with another network however, one that offers better deals on big data packages.
