The vast majority of us these days have media stored on our devices. Maybe you’ve got a hard drive full of movies, or you’ve got tons of pictures stored on your cell phone. For the most part, we content ourselves with using this media on small screens, but what about if you could beam your data to your living room TV? That’s exactly what Chromecast is offering to do for you.
Why should you be looking at deals that come with Chromecast? Because it’s the simplest way to get digital media to your big screen TV. Not only that, but you can stream too, using services like Netflix or BBC iPlayer. You can even mirror your phone or laptop screen onto your TV. What’s not to love about Chromecast?
Small, portable and infinitely powerful, Chromecast offers the ultimate in data streaming. All you need is a TV and a smartphone or laptop and your Chromecast device and you’ll be ready to go.
To the uninitiated eye, Chromecast looks like a mobile dongle or a USB flash drive. It’s really that small. The tiny little device slides easily into your pocket, and there are no buttons or screens, simply a plastic casing and a couple of connectors. Simple, right? So why are we getting all excited about what’s essentially a glorified flash drive?
Plug that little drive into your TV’s HDMI port though, and download a few bits of software for your phone or laptop, and suddenly your TV becomes the best screen in the house. Grab videos, music or photos off your laptop or phone and show them on your TV, stream movies and TV programmes from the internet and watch them on the big screen. Chromecast does all of this simply and elegantly.
There’s no set top box, in fact, there’s no box at all, all there is is a small, unobtrusive plastic dongle inserted into your TV. No new gadgets to find shelf space for, and nothing balancing on top of the TV. Chromecast is small, powerful and very, very cool.
Let’s be clear, there are other home streaming and data sharing services. But with most of these you need a degree in computing to set up and programme a media server, not with Chromecast though. Set up is easy and simple.
Chromecast plugs into an HDMI slot on your TV, then you either plug the power cable into an outlet, or if your TV has a USB port, plug the power cable into that instead. Go to the Chromecast homepage on your phone or laptop (or both) register, download the software or app, connect the Chromecast to your home WiFi network and you’re done. Dead simple.
When it comes to using your Chromecast, it’s even easier. Apps that support Chromecast will show a small symbol in the corner of the page (a rectangle with three curved bars in the corner), hit that symbol and the app will automatically be shown on your TV. You really can’t get any easier than that.
Chromecast has no user interface of its own, so there’s nothing to learn. It simply connects through an app and you’re good to go.
Sharing data that you’ve got stored on another gadget is dead easy too. Unlike other TV streaming boxes, Chromecast will support either Apple or Android devices, and will also work through the Chrome browser on any laptop or tablet, so there’s no restrictions on who can use the gadget. Windows phones are not currently supported, but will be soon.
There are a variety of different apps to download, depending on what you want to share and what kind of device you’re running the app on. For example, Media Browser will allow you to stream any video stored on any device through your TV. Or Photo Caster allows Apple users to stream their pictures.
Android users are maybe slightly better supported, since the AllCast app will allow them to stream anything through their phone onto the TV. But anyone can use the Chrome browser to get what they need on the big screen.
Screen mirroring is also possible if you’re using Chrome, so you can get your internet on the TV too. With so many different options for sharing your media, it’s guaranteed that you’ll be able to get what you want through whichever device you want onto your TV. All you need to do is find the app that you need to do the job.
Chromecast isn’t all about sharing the data or media that you already have, it’s also about streaming new media. If you’re a fan of Netflix or BBC iPlayer, you’ll know how easy it is to stream media these days. The only downside of these services is that you get stuck watching the latest Hollywood blockbuster on a small computer screen.
No longer though. With the Netflix or iPlayer app on your phone, or opening Netflix or iPlayer using Chrome on your laptop, you can now enjoy all your favourite TV shows and movies on the large screen in your living room.
All you need to do is hit the Chromecast button on the app or web page and you’re good to go. Streaming media to the big screen has never been easier.
|AUDIO / VIDEO|
|Max. video resolution||1080p|
|Built-in Wi-Fi support||802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n|
Whether you want to be able to watch your existing media on TV, stream new media through Netflix or another site, or simply mirror your computer or smartphone screen onto the larger television screen, Chromecast makes every task easy and fast. It’s portable too, so you can take it anywhere you want that has a TV and a WiFi connection.
Is there anything that we don’t love about Chromecast? That’s tough. There aren’t a lot of UK streaming services around at the moment, other than Netflix and iPlayer, which means streaming new media is still quite limited. This is sure to change in the near future though, meaning that Chromecast is going to be even better. If you’re looking to stream media, Chromecast is the perfect solution for your needs.
