Wearables are a fairly new market niche, and one that hasn’t quite been explored yet. Apple released their first watch just a couple of years ago, and sales figures were a little disappointing (mostly due to Android watches outperforming their iOS counterparts). But the newest Apple Watch Series 2 has all the improvements we were hoping for, plus a few more. Have Apple finally owned their wearables? It certainly looks like it.
Why should you want one of these devices? Well, it’s fast and powerful, with a fantastic screen. It’s waterproof, and includes a heart rate monitor and GPS for fitness and run tracking. It’s also got vastly improved battery life over the last model, and is full of new features. This is the wearable that we’ve all been waiting for, and it’s no surprise that it comes from Apple. If you want a fantastic iOS watch, then this is exactly what you’re looking for.
This is so obviously an Apple product, with smooth lines, curved edges, and minimalistic styling. The Apple Watch is a square faced design, a good thing since it means you get more screen space. On the right side you’ll find the (covered) charging point, and a round, spinning button which Apple refers to as a “digital crown,” but that looks like the winder on a traditional watch. The Watch 2 is a looker, and certainly looks more like a watch than other manufacturer’s attempts. It’s customisable too, with plenty of casing and strap options to combine, letting you get the watch that you want.
Beautiful design aside, you’re getting a full feature list here. The Watch 2 has great, fast processing power, extended battery life, heart rate monitor, GPS, Bluetooth, and everything else that you could possibly ask for in a wearable.
Wearables aren’t cheap, and Apple wearables in particular don’t come cheap, but this is one of the best watches on the market right now. The combination of style and features simply can’t be beaten. So if you’re looking for the best, you’re in the right place!
So, what’s running your Apple Watch Series 2? Well, the main driver is the new S2 processor chip inside. It’s dual core, and makes the Series 2 watch a whole lot faster and more responsive than the older Series 1 model. There’s also a fair bit of RAM (somewhere between 512 MB and 1 GB, Apple aren’t clear on which), so multi tasking is no problem at all. Bottom line? The Apple Watch Series 2 is faster and far more responsive than ever before.
In terms of operating system, you’re obviously looking at an iOS device, and the Watch 2 runs a specific wearable version of iOS, called WatchOS 3. This gives a whole new level of functionality to the watch when compared to older models. There’s now a dock, press the power button and you’ll have instant access to your ten most used apps. There’s also Force Touch, meaning you can tap the screen or press the screen giving you two different options depending on the app that you’re using.
In short, the Watch 2 is a big step up from the Watch 1, both in terms of speed and functionality. The Series 2 is just more intuitive, easier to use, and, frankly, more useful.
First up, there are two size variations to consider here: 42 mm and 38 mm. Whilst obviously the 42 mm version gives you more screen space, for those with a delicate wrist (and honestly, for all women), the 38 mm is probably going to be a better fit. Given that you won’t be typing on the screen, that extra 4 mm really doesn’t make much of a difference, other than aesthetically.
The screen itself is an OLED Retina display, and you’re looking at 272 x 340 pixels on the 38 mm version, and 312 x 390 pixels on the 42 mm version. This means you’re getting a sharp, clear image. Not only that though, but the Watch 2 has increased brightness, being twice as bright as the Watch 1, and therefore easier to see.
A screen on a watch isn’t quite as important as on a phone, since the options to make use of the screen are more limited. However, you’re getting a solid, bright, sharp display here, which is what really matters.
There are a fair few special features on the Watch 2 that really deserve a mention. Firstly, it’s Bluetooth capable, with Bluetooth 4.0, making for a fast and secure connection. It’s WiFi capable too. That means you can connect in your headphones for music streaming, for example.
The Watch 2 has been optimised for fitness. Under the face is a heart rate monitor, and GPS is included as well. This lets you do things such as track your running or swimming. Swimming? Yes, since the Watch 2 is water resistant up to 50 metres, swimming is no problem at all.
There’s also taptic feedback featured on the Watch 2. Basically this allows the watch to vibrate in order to tell you things. Should an alarm go off, for example, you’ll find that your watch vibrates simultaneously. It’s a nice way to make you aware that something’s happening with your phone that you should attend to.
Finally, there are some issues we need to address here. First is battery life. Battery life has been vastly extended compared to the first Watch edition. Apple claims that the Watch 2 can go for two days between charges. However, do be aware that this depends on how you use your watch. Streaming music through Bluetooth or having GPS constantly switched on will deplete the battery faster.
Secondly, be aware that you must have an iPhone to use the Apple Watch. It will NOT work with an Android!
Finally, there’s the question of apps. Obviously, not all apps are designed to work with the watch, particularly third party apps. Most native Apple apps work well, and there are a few others (things like Uber, for example). The list of supported apps is growing daily, but it’s unlikely that every app you have can be used on the watch.

Wearables are a very up and coming market segment, and Apple obviously want a piece of the pie. Thankfully, the Watch Series 2 is a huge improvement over their first version. Faster, more responsive, water resistant and with GPS, the Watch 2 has a lot to offer. If you’re in the market for an iOS wearable, then this is going to be the clear choice.
Right, so what didn’t we like? Firstly, we have to say that the Series 2 is such a huge improvement over the Series 1 that it seems a little petty to complain. We would like to see more supported apps, but as we said, that list is growing by the minute. Other than that though, we think that Apple has done a fantastic job with the Watch Series 2. This is the best Apple Watch around, and you’re going to love it!
