Just six months after the release of their last flagship phone, Sony are at it again, this time with the Xperia Z3. Whilst the Z2 was a pretty good phone, the Z3 is a pretty amazing phone, with none of the flaws of the older model. From new design specs to great camera and processing specs, the Z3 really is a top of the line flagship.
Why should you buy? That camera and it’s low light ability is fantastic, the ability to play PS4 games is cool, and performance on the Xperia Z3 is extremely good indeed. If you want a top of the line phone then you might want to consider the Xperia Z3 as one of your top choices. This is one of the best releases we’ve seen so far this year.
The Xperia Z3 looks a lot like a minimalist version of the Z2. The Z3 is a lot more comfortable to hold though, given it’s more rounded corners and tapered edges. The body is a glass build, making it lightweight and shiny, though a little prone to fingerprints. But on the whole, this both looks and feels like a premium device, and it’s one that’s sure to turn a few heads.
Internally, you’re getting some very nice specs indeed. There’s great processing power, as well as a solid camera and a bunch of other cool features thrown in as well, including high resolution sound, for one.
The Xperia Z3 is indisputably a top of the line phone. Can it compete against the Samsung Galaxys and the iPhones? Absolutely. The Z3 is Sony’s best phone ever, and it’s a solid contender for best smart phone of the year.
The engine driving the Xperia Z3 is a hearty 2.5 GHZ quad core CPU along with a full 3 GB of RAM. For you the user that means that you’re getting one of the fastest phones around, and all that RAM makes for great multi tasking and awesome responsiveness.
On the OS side of things, the Z3 is running the latest Android 4.4 Kit Kat. That means your getting the fastest and most stable that Android has to offer, as well as a few new features. Immersion mode lets you get a full screen picture without any status bar, for example, and voice recognition support has vastly improved over older Android versions.
A great phone is all about performance, and the Xperia Z3 isn’t going to let you down. With specs like these you can expect true top of the line performance, with no lagging or freezing anywhere to be found.
Looking at the numbers alone it’s tough to see how the screen on the Z3 is different from that of the older Z2. You’re looking at a 5.2 inch screen, which is a decent size for a regular mobile, though smaller than you’d find on a phablet. But with that size you’re getting a good compromise between a large screen experience and a phone that you can still use with one hand if necessary.
This is a high resolution screen, measuring in at 1080 x 1920, working out to around 424 PPI. That means definition is sharp and pictures are clear. It is an LCD screen, rather than AMOLED, but Sony have included IPS technology, giving deeper and better colour reproduction, so you’re unlikely to notice any difference.
One thing does set the Z3’s screen apart from that of the Z2, and that’s brightness. The Z3 get around 600 candelas more brightness than the Z2, which simply means that it’s easier to see the display in bright light.
Screen specs on the Xperia Z3 are excellent, and viewing is a pleasure. You’re not going to have any display complaints here.
Frankly, we’re big fans of Xperia cameras in general, since they seem to be a good balance not only of a large number of MP but also the extra features that make for great pictures. The front facing video chat camera is a 2.2 MP device, which is a little higher than we’d expect to see, making for some great selfies.
On the rear there’s a 20.7 MP camera, so you’re getting great picture detail. Not only that though, but you’re getting a wider lens to capture larger pictures, as well as much improved ISO for better low light pictures. In fact, the Xperia Z3 has probably the best low light camera on the market.
In terms of added features, you can record in HD, and the camera is HDR capable. There’s optical image stabilisation, LED flash, and facial recognition as well. All in all, you’re getting some very good picture quality out of the Z3.
We do need to mention two great improvements that Sony have made on the Z3. One of these is the ability to support high resolution sound. We’ve always loved Sony’s sound quality, and now it’s even better than ever. You can not only download true high res audio tracks, but the phone will also upgrade your regular tracks for a better sound experience.
In terms of battery power, despite having a brighter screen and a smaller battery than the Z2 model, the Z3 does get better battery life. Sony claim that with regular use the Z3 can go for two days between charges. This is due to new screen tech that Sony have used which drains less battery power during use.
Sony have been marketing the PS4 abilities of the Xperia Z3 pretty heavily, and they’re actually quite cool, though you’ll still need a PS4 controller in order to use them. As long as your PS4 console and phone are using the same WiFi connection you can access your PS4 games through your phone.
What does that actually mean? Two things. Firstly, you can connect your controller to your phone, using your phone’s screen to play. Secondly, you can connect your phone to a TV, and play through that. This might be handy if your PS4 is attached to the big screen downstairs, and you want to play a round on the upstairs TV.

The Sony Xperia Z3 is solid proof that Sony really can compete at the top end of the market. This is a fully fledged flagship phone, with a great screen, awesome internals, a good camera and some very nice added features as well.
On top of all of this, you’ll be getting the normal connectivity options that you’d expect to see. There’s 3G and 4G, as well as WiFi, and the latest in Bluetooth support too, so hands free sets should be no problem at all.
Do we have any complaints about the Z3? Nothing big. That back glass plate does attract fingerprints like flies, but that’s nothing that a phone case won’t solve. Other than that, this is a stunning device. If you want top of the line, then you’ve got to consider the Sony Xperia Z3.
