About the Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra

There really is an Xperia for everyone. Sony’s best selling line of phones features everything from top end flagship devices, to budget mobiles and everything in between. The Xperia XA2 Ultra is fairly unique though. A mid-range phone with decent specs, a huge phablet screen, and very impressive cameras. It’s not often that that combo appears on shelves, and Sony are banking on the XA2 Ultra being a customer favourite.

So why should you want one? There’s that huge screen for a start, as well as plenty of power under the hood. But there are also triple cameras, expandable storage, and that all important (and often missing) headphone jack. If you’re looking for a big phone that doesn’t come with a big price tag, then the Xperia XA2 Ultra is a clear choice.

Key Features on the Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra

This phone could only be a Sony. That brazenly rectangular design, those sharp corners, those slim edges, this is definitely an Xperia. You’re getting a metal build mobile, so it feels great and solid in the hand, and weight is low despite its size. In fact, the Ultra is more portable than you’d think and easily slips into a pocket.

Looks aside you’re getting some serious power under the hood. Plenty of processing power, plenty of RAM, a solid battery, and triple cameras to boot. Not a bad combination at all, especially at this price point.

You won’t be paying a fortune for the Ultra, but you won’t be making too many sacrifices either. Great specs, great price, great features, what more could you be looking for in a new mobile?

Power and Performance Specs

Performance is obviously important in a phone, and the Ultra isn’t going to disappoint. The combination of a Snapdragon 630 chipset, a Cortex-A53 octa core processor and a massive 4 Gb of RAM make this a speedy little device. There’ll be more than enough power here to do everything that you need.

Like all Xperia devices, you’re getting an Android device. Out of the box, you’re getting the latest Android 8.0 Oreo OS version. This gives added speed as well as stability and security, plus some nice features, like better notification control and privacy settings.

We’ll be honest and say that this isn’t the fastest phone on shelves, but for the average user, it’s way more than fast enough. You’ll find the performance on the Ultra to be more than satisfactory, with no hint of lag or freezing, even when running multiple processes.

The Huge Display

The Ultra’s big screen is sure to be a selling point. You’re getting an impressive 6 inches of display space here, giving you loads of room for typing and making video watching awesome. The Ultra does still fit in the pocket, but be aware that one-handed use isn’t really possible and you might want to consider the smaller Sony Xperia XA2.

When it comes to resolution you’re getting Full HD. That’s 1080 x 1920 pixels, working out to around 367 PPI. The picture on the Ultra is sharp and clear, and because this is an LCD screen colour reproduction is also nice and bright. There is also IPS tech here, so you get great viewing angles as well.

Given that this is a mid-range phone, screen specs are surprisingly good. There’s plenty of room for anything you want to do, and picture quality is warm and clearer than you might think. In short, the Ultra is a pleasure to look at, and in particular is great for gaming.

The Camera Set

The camera set on the Ultra presents another great selling point. At the front you’re getting dual cameras, both a 16 MP and an 8 MP cam, meaning that the Ultra is the ultimate selfie machine (and gets great video calling too).

Around at the rear you’re getting a fantastic camera as well. It’s a 23 MP, f/2.0 aperture, 1/2.3’’ sensor, 24 mm cam. That means you’re going to be getting sharp, clear pics. Plus, there’s all the usual stuff: LED flash, phase detection autofocus, 4K video recording, touch focus, HDR, geo-tagging and everything else you’d expect to see.

In short, you’re going to get amazing pics with the Ultra. Colour reproduction is excellent, detail is incredible, and whether you’re using the rear or front cameras you’re going to get a great shot every time.

And the Rest…

As a mid-range phone, the Ultra doesn’t get tons of extra features, but there are a few things that we need to mention. First up, you do get a USB C charging port, giving you faster charging as well as a reversible connector. And there’s a headphone jack too, which should please music lovers.

You’re also getting a fingerprint sensor, something generally lacking in Sony’s mid-range devices, so there’s added security as well as access to digital wallet systems.

Finally, you’re getting plenty of battery power thanks to a huge Li-Ion 3580 mAh battery. That should be more than enough juice to get you through the day, and QuickCharge 3.0 tech means that you’ll get faster than ever charging as well.

Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra Review

The Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra is an awesome mid range phablet phone that takes amazing pictures. You’ll get loads of power and RAM, triple cameras, and a huge, 6 inch screen, all for a mid budget price. You won’t spend a fortune, but you will get a very powerful mobile without making too many sacrifices.

In terms of connectivity you’re getting the expected options, so WiFi, 3G, 4G, and Bluetooth. There are two internal storage versions of the Ultra, with either 32 GB or 64 GB of memory. However, both offer an SD card slot for the addition of up to 256 GB of extra memory.

So, is there anything we don’t like? To be honest, we’d like to see a little higher resolution on that big screen, but at this price point that seems a picky detail. There’s a fair amount of bezel around the screen too, unlike many near bezel-less phones that we’re starting to see, but the Ultra is still pretty portable in size. On the whole, we like the Ultra a lot, and think you will too. If you’re looking for a mid range phablet that can take some of the best photos around, then you’re going to need to check out the Sony Xperia XA2 Ultra.
