Samsung are one of the most recognisable names on the mobile market and seem to pride themselves on having a little something for everyone. Though they’re best known for their Galaxy S series, they do have a stunning range of other budget options. The Galaxy J6 is a lower mid-range phone, but one that Samsung have kitted out with impressive specs. Will this be enough to stand out in the crowded middle market niche? Samsung thinks so, and the J6 does have some awesome selling points.
Why should you want the J6? Yes, there’s plenty of power, yes, there are decent cameras, but it’s probably going to be that AMOLED display that’s the real clincher here. And if you’re looking for a phone that gets great performance and looks good but that doesn’t cost the earth, then the J6 is going to be a fantastic choice.
Key Features on the Samsung Galaxy J6
You’d be forgiven for mistaking the J6 for one of the more expensive Galaxy S series phones. It’s got the same aluminium build, the same slim profile and sleek edges. It’s lightweight certainly, and fits easily into the hand, thanks to minimum bezels around the screen (unusual at this price point). The J6 feels premium and robust, and definitely looks more expensive than it really is.
Looks aside, the J6 is packing quite a punch when it comes to power and RAM. There’s a decent camera set on board, as well as a large battery. And then there’s that big AMOLED display. All in all, a very satisfactory package.
In fact, probably the biggest surprise here is the price tag. We’re talking a premium looking and feeling phone that’s falling on the low mid-range of the budget spectrum. If you’re shopping for a phone that can do it all but won’t send you bankrupt, the Galaxy J6 could be a very good choice indeed.
Power and Performance
You’re obviously going to be looking for a phone that’s up to the job, and the J6 isn’t going to let you down. There’s an octo core 1.6 GHz processor on board, along with either 4 GB (on the 64 GB storage version) or 3 GB (on the 32 GB version) of RAM. This all adds up to a phone that’s fast, reliable, and excellent at multi-tasking.
On the OS front, this is an Android phone, as are all Samsung models these days. You’ll be running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, so the newest OS version. This gives you more speed, more stability and more security. Plus, notification management and split screen functions are vastly improved in Android 8.
For the average phone user, the J6 is going to be a star performer. No lag, no stuttering, and certainly no freezing. If you want a phone that can do everything you need and more, then you’ve found it.
It’s the screen that really impresses us about the J6, given that it’s far better than we’d expect to see at this price point. It’s a large 5.6-inch display, giving you loads of room for typing and viewing, and thanks to the minimal bezel this is still a phone that’s comfortable to use with one hand. It’s a lot more compact than that screen size would have you believe.
In terms of resolution you’re getting 720 x 1480, so HD, giving you around 294 PPI. Those aren’t the highest resolution numbers around, but the picture is crisp and sharp. But this is an AMOLED screen, meaning you get fantastic colour reproduction and brightness, more than making up for those lower resolution numbers.
Whether you’re high-end gaming or HD video watching, the display on the J6 is a joy to look at. And this really is one of the best displays in this price range, a definite selling point.
So, on to the camera set. And again, we’re seeing better than we’d expect at this price point. At the front there’s a full 8 MP cam, so your selfies should look great and video calling is a breeze.
Moving around to the rear and there’s a single lens 13 MP cam. You get LED flash and autofocus, as well as the expected features like HDR, panorama, geo-tagging, facial recognition and the like.
No, it’s not the greatest camera set around, but it’s more than satisfactory. If you’re an avid mobile photographer, then this camera set should more than do the job, though pro photographers might want to opt for one of Samsung’s more expensive models with dual cameras.
And the Extras…
We’re not expecting a whole bunch of extras in this price range, but there are a few things that are worthy of mention. This is not an IP certified phone, so it’s not waterproof or dustproof, though Gorilla Glass does make it more shatterproof than a regular smartphone.
Charging is via micro USB rather than the more modern USB-C port, and there’s no quick charge tech or wireless charging on board. This is, however, a large 3000 mAh battery, so you should get some very decent battery life out of the J6.
You get a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, so a little-added security there. And music lovers will be happy to hear that there is a headphone jack, so you won’t need wireless or Bluetooth headphones. Oh, and there’s 4G too, for faster mobile data if you happen to have a 4G data plan in your phone contract.
The J6 is coming in three colours, black, gold and blue (sometimes referred to as lavender). And there are two storage variants too, with either 64 GB or 32 GB of internal memory. However, both storage versions do accept an SD card so you can add up to 256 GB of extra storage should you need it.
Samsung Galaxy J6 Deals
We’ll start off by saying that the J6 isn’t actually on UK shelves yet as we write this, so we can’t give you definitive answers about deals and prices. SIM-free we’re expecting the J6 to cost less than £300, and most likely around the £250 mark. In terms of a contract, all major operators carry Samsung phones so it’s likely that you’ll be able to get the J6 from any of them. Based on phones of a similar price point you should be looking at paying from about £18 to £30 per month for the J6 depending on the service contract you use, with upfront prices going from £0 to about £80. Again though, that’s speculation.
If you’re shopping on contract then your best bet is probably going to be paying as much up front as you can. And do look for contracts that have decent data allowances, since going over that data limit can get pricey. Finally, don’t forget that the J6 does have 4G, so make sure that your contract includes 4G data if you want it.
Discounts on SIM-free models are going to be tough to find around release time. Generally, phones get cheaper over time, so we wouldn’t really expect to see discounts on the J6 until around Christmas 2018 or a little before.
Shopping in the mid-price range for mobiles can be an exercise in balancing sacrifices and cost. But the Samsung Galaxy J6 doesn’t demand sacrifice. You get a great combination of specs for what is going to be a very wallet-friendly price. So if you’re looking for a fantastic phone that won’t break the bank, you’ll definitely want to consider the Galaxy J6!

We’ll be honest, we don’t often find exciting phones in the mid-range niche, but the Galaxy J6 has surprised us.
