Samsung Patents Horizontal Sliding Phone Design

Samsung's recent focus has been on the foldable display with the Korean giant launching the Galaxy Fold in September this year. While the firm is clearly working on more devices of a foldable ilk, a leaked patent shows they are also keen to launch a horizontal sliding phone design that bumps up the screen real estate by over 50%.

While details are scarce at the moment, it appears the phone works by pulling out a hidden screen on a sliding rail mechanism that increases the size by what appears to be almost double. Will that be a win in terms of durability and longevity of the device after foldable screens have been heavily scrutinised for their fragility?

With this sliding design, a normal 6-inch smartphone will turn urn into a 9-inch+ tablet. The loose renders from the patent application show that the hidden screen rides on a track in order to open and close.
