About the Nokia 8 Sirocco

Nokia have long been a stalwart on the mobile market, and their new line of Android phones has proven that they’re not dead yet. But is there really room for yet another Android flagship phone? With the release of the Nokia 8 Sirocco, the manufacturer have shown that they have what it takes to compete against the might of Samsung, and the Sirocco is the true king of the Nokia line.

Why should you be queuing up to get one? There’s plenty of power, there’s tons of storage, there’s a fantastic curved display, the Sirocco definitely ticks all the mobile boxes. Sure, it’s not the cheapest Nokia around, but sometimes you just get what you pay for.

Key Features on the

Nokia Sirocco

The Sirocco looks premium from the get-go. It’s got an elegantly curved screen, thin profile, and slim lines. It’s a steel frame with glass body, and it not only feels sturdy and safe in the hand but also top quality. It’s not the lightest model around at 177 grams, but it doesn’t feel fragile or flimsy in the slightest.

Underneath the hood, there are some satisfying specs too. There’s plenty of power, good RAM, good screen specs, fantastic Zeiss optics cameras, and loads of internal storage space, plus a few extra features thrown into the mix as well.

The Sirocco isn’t the cheapest phone in Nokia’s line up, but it makes one fantastic package. If you’re in the market for a top end phone, then the Sirocco certainly deserves your consideration. It’s a beast of a phone.

Those Performance Specs

We’ll start with the most important issue first: performance. The Sirocco is running octo core processing power, with two quad-core processors running simultaneously (a 2.5 GHz and a 1.8 GHz model). And there’s an impressive 6 GB of RAM, meaning that the Sirocco is lightning fast and super responsive as well.

Like all of the relaunched Nokia’s mobiles, this is an Android device. You’ll be running Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box, giving you all the security, speed and stability of the most up to date OS version available. You get some nice features on Oreo too, including split-screen ability and better notification management.

The bottom line here is that performance is brilliant. There’s no lag, even when multitasking or using CPU intensive apps. The Nokia 8 Sirocco is capable of handling anything that you want to do, satisfying even the most demanding user.

That Curved Display

The display on the Sirocco is curved, though not as much as on the Samsung Galaxy Edge series, however it does mean that the display nicely covers the front of the phone with minimal side bezels. In terms of real estate you’re getting 5.5 inches, so plenty of room for typing and viewing, and there’s a 16:9 ratio. At 5.5 inches the Sirocco is suitable for one-handed use and is fairly portable when compared to larger screened devices.

Resolution wise you’re looking at 1440 x 2560 pixels, giving you around 534 PPI. This gives you a crisp, clear picture with no pixelation. This is also an OLED display, so it’s bright and colour reproduction is pretty good too (though in the curved screen sections whites can look a little blue).

On the whole, the display on the Sirocco is very good. HD video, top end games, all look excellent and clear, and the curve is a nice touch. There are no complaints here from us!

The Camera Set

We’ve come to expect great cameras from Nokia, and the Sirocco doesn’t let us down. At the front, you’re getting a 5 MP, f/2.0 aperture lens, which isn’t too shabby. For video calling and the odd selfie, it should do just fine.

Around at the rear though, you’re getting dual cameras. There’s a 12 MP, f/1.8 lens alongside a 13 MP, f/2.6 lens, meaning you get fantastic detail in shots. And there are tons of camera features too, including 2x optical zoom, dual pixel phase detection autofocus, dual LED dual-tone flash, and those all-important Zeiss optics.

If you love mobile photography, then the Nokia 8 Sirocco is going to be a great choice for you. Shots look amazing, even in low light, and you’ll capture plenty of detail. Even action shots look great on the Sirocco.

And the Rest…

There are a fair few extras on the Sirocco, but some really deserve a mention here. First up, the Sirocco is IP67 certified, so it’s both dustproof and waterproof for up to 30 minutes in up to 1.5 metres of water. Handy if you’re not always as careful as you should be with your phone.

You get quick charge tech and USB-C charging, as well as Qi wireless charging should you want it. But a large 3260 mAh battery means you shouldn’t have to charge too often since it promises 495 hours of standby time as well as up to 22 hours of active talk time.

Nokia have opted to put the Sirocco in the Android One programme, which basically means that the phone is very close to stock Android and there’s no bloatware whatsoever, which is always nice. And finally, there’s a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, which most people find easier and more comfortable to use than a front mounted sensor.

There’s only one version of the Sirocco available, and that gets a pretty hefty 128 GB of internal storage. However, the Sirocco does not have an SD card slot, so you won’t be able to add any additional memory to that.

Nokia 8 Sirocco Deals

As of June 2018, this is Nokia’s flagship device, and prices do reflect that. You should be able to find the Sirocco with most UK operators (the ones that do sell handsets), but SIM free you’re looking at paying around £650. On contract, you’re looking at paying anywhere from around £35 to around £55 per month for the Sirocco and calling plan, though upfront costs tend to be lower than expected with some operators offering £0 upfront deals.

You should be looking for a plan with a decent data allowance if you’re looking for contract deals on the Sirocco. 4G connectivity means that the Sirocco will suck down a fair amount of data. There have been a few gift deals around, including things like a Google Home Mini, so you might want to keep an eye out for those as well. Though if you’re going through an operator do remember that those free gifts could well have to be returned if you cancel your contract.

Surprisingly, despite this being a relatively new and top end model, we have already seen some SIM-free discounts as well. Some retailers have been cutting £50 or so from the total price, though these deals change often so monitor them carefully. In general, deals get better over time. This is a relatively new phone, so autumn 2018 should see better deals and discounts become available on the Sirocco.

If you’re looking for a phone that looks amazing, feels top end, and gets great performance, then you definitely need to consider the Nokia 8 Sirocco. With fantastic specs, great build quality, and some nice added extras, the Sirocco makes an excellent choice and one that even demanding users will appreciate. There are plenty of deals available as well, letting you save cash, and you should be able to get the Sirocco with most UK operators on contract should you choose to.

Nokia 8 Sirocco Review

We’ll admit that we’re already fans of the new Nokia line of phones. They’re rugged, dependable, and tend to be affordable too. The new Nokia 8 Sirocco is at the top end of the price spectrum, but we love that curved display, and those cameras are simply brilliant. It’s definitely a good looking phone, but it’s not just all about looks, performance is excellent. If you’re looking for a top end phone that really looks fantastic, then you’ll love the Nokia 8 Sirocco as much as we do!
