Motorola have come a long way since the days of pagers, and recently they’ve released some very impressive devices. Rather than concentrating on flagship, high end phones, Motorola have spotted a niche for decent budget hand sets, and have leapt into the breach. There newest offering, the G4 has to be one of the highest specced budget hand sets around. Can you have all the power and features you need without breaking the bank? Motorola think so, and the Moto G4 proves their point.
What do you have to look forward to here? There’s loads of power and RAM, there’s a full HD screen, a very satisfying camera set, improved battery life, and it’s even a dual SIM model. If you’re looking for the best on a budget, then the Moto G4 is going to be the phone for you!
The Moto G4 is a very solid phone. Whilst it’s not as thin as some models, that extra thickness makes it sit very securely in the hand. Corners are gently curved, as are the edges, and there’s little side bezel around the screen, so no wasted space. The back panel is plastic, but feels rigid and robust, and is easily removed should you need to take it off.
Aside from it’s rugged good looks, the Moto G4 has some excellent internals for the price. You’re getting plenty of power and RAM, there’s great battery life, and some fantastic cameras too. There’s not too much in the way of extras, but at this price with these performance specs, that’s more than forgiveable.
There are plenty of budget hand sets around, but these tend to involve making sacrifices. Yes, the Moto G4 comes in at the upper end of the budget segment, but you’re getting what you pay for, with no sacrifices required when it comes to performance.
That being said, let’s first look at performance, since that’s the key factor here. You’re getting octo core processing power, yes, you read that right. Octo core processing on a budget hand set, and that’s two quad core processors (1.5 GHz and 1.2 GHz), plus a full 2 GB of RAM. Put those together and you’ve got lightening speeds and real responsiveness.
As with most Motorola devices you’re getting an Android phone, and this runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. You should be fine to upgrade to the newer 7.0 Nougat as soon as it becomes available to you. Intuitive, simple, with tons of customisation options, Android is the operating system of choice for most people, and the newer versions give you more stability and a little more speed too.
We can’t emphasise enough how good performance is here, you’re getting real top end performance specs on a budget hand set. Even hard core users will see that the Moto G4 is smooth, fast, and very, very responsive to input.
Now for that display, and you’re getting a full 5.5 inch screen here. That gives you tons of space for typing and viewing, though one handed use is a little difficult. The Moto G4 won’t slide as easily into the pocket as other budget devices, but you do get the convenience of a larger than normal display.
Resolution wise you’re getting full HD, with 1080 x 1920 pixels, so around 401 PPI, meaning clear, sharp image quality. You’re also getting excellent colour reproduction on this LCD screen, with natural looking light, and great viewing angles thanks to IPS technology.
This is one of the finest budget screens we’ve ever seen, maybe even the best. It’s a pleasure to look at, with even HD video and high end games looking flawless. You’ll hear no complaints from us about this screen.
Onward and upward and let’s talk cameras. We all use our mobiles for pics these days, so you’ll need some solid cameras on the G4. At the front you’ve got a 5 MP cam, which should be more than good enough for your selfies and your video calling.
At the rear, you’re getting a whopping 13 MP cam, way better resolution than we expect at this price point. This is an f/2.0 apeture cam, with dual LED flash, as well as all the extras you’d expect, like HDR, auto face detection, panorama mode, and touch focus as well.
In short, these are excellent cameras, and the pics you take will more than prove that. From action shots to portraits, the G4’s camera takes some amazing pictures, and amateurs and pros alike will be more than satisfied.
We’ll be honest here, there aren’t too many special extras added on to the Moto G4. Motorola prefer instead to give you better performance specs for your money, which is both appreciated and understandable. You won’t be getting things like fingerprint sensors here, and there’s no NFC either (which means no mobile payment systems).
However, you do get amazing battery life, with a large Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery, which should be more than big enough to last you a full day per charge cycle. You get quick charge tech as well, so should you need to charge it will all go much faster than with a traditional charging jack. Finally, this is a dual SIM phone, so it will accept and use two SIM cards simultaneously, which is useful for the frequent traveller, or those that have both business and personal SIMs.

So, any complaints? Um, not really. We’d like to see a fingerprint scanner, simply because this is becoming the standard for security these days, but that seems a little petty given everything else the G4 has to offer. In fact, we’re amazed by the Moto G4. These specs for this price is unbelievable. If you want the best budget hand set, then you’ve got to check out the Moto G4!
