About the Lumia 950 XL Black

Lumia are the king of Windows phones, but unfortunately the competition just isn’t that tough, as the manufacturer are one of the only makers of Windows mobile devices left on the market. Given that, it’s hardly surprising that Lumias have become sort of bleh over the last few years, hardly innovative and certainly not must haves. However, the new Lumia 950 XL is out to change that, and given the huge specs involved here this might just be the phone that makes you switch from Android.

Why should you want a Lumia 950 XL? It’s truly difficult to know where to begin. That huge super high resolution screen maybe, or what about that octo core processing power? Or maybe we should mention that incredible PureView camera that’s on board? Whatever you’re looking for, the Lumia 950 XL will have it in spades, it’s a truly stunning device.

Key Features on the Lumia 950 XL

The Lumia is minimalist, that’s the only word for it. It’s square, the corners only slightly rounded, sleek and slim. The front is almost entirely glass with only a fraction of bezelling showing, and the flat polycarbonate back panel sports only a camera lens and a small Microsoft logo. This is an elegant device, one that doesn’t need to shout its name from the rooftops, it’s a looker but its understated, and boy, does it feel good in the hand.

Life isn’t all about looks though, and fortunately, neither is the Lumia 950 XL. It’s got heaps of RAM, tons of octo core processing power, some of the best cameras on the market and just about anything you could hope for in a top of the line mobile.

The 950 XL has it all, it has more than it all, and the combination of those stylish good looks with some hefty internal specs means that this is going to be a drool-worthy purchase for any Windows mobile fan.

The Engines

Let’s start by taking a look at those performance specs. The 950 XL has octo core processing power which it achieves by run two quad core processors simultaneously (a 1.5 GHz and a 2.0 GHz model). It’s also got a Snapdragon 810 chipset and a full 3 GB of RAM. Add all that up and you’ve got a powerhouse of a phone, speedy, responsive, and able to do anything you could possibly ask of it.

Yes, this is a Lumia, and yes, it’s a Windows phone. In fact, this was one of the first models to run the new Windows Mobile 10 out of the box. If you’re familiar with a Windows PC then Windows mobile will be more than intuitive, it’ll be like an old friend. And Windows 10 is better than ever before, combining the best of older OS versions and throwing in a few new tricks as well.

Looking for performance? It’s going to be tough to beat the Lumia 950 XL. It’s by far the most powerful Windows mobile around, and gives even the best Androids a run for their money as well. You’re not going to be disappointed here, we promise.

That Screen

The screen on the Lumia 950 XL is its crowning glory and it’s simply breathtaking. The XL, as you’d expect, is extra large and boasts a full 5.7 inch screen, which is more than enough display real estate. Despite the size one handed use isn’t too uncomfortable unless you’ve got very small hands, though putting the 950 XL into your jeans pocket isn’t an easy task.

Now, resolution. This is Quad HD. You heard that right. You’re getting 1440 x 2560 pixels, which even on a 5.7 inch screen works out to be around 518 PPI. Plus, it’s an AMOLED display as well. All of this means that you’re getting a sharp, crisp picture with fantastic colour reproduction.

This is one of the best displays around right now, bar none, and it’s a true pleasure to look at. From HD video to simple web browsing, the display on the 950 XL is a real beauty.

Taking Pictures

Lumias have great cameras as a general rule, and the 950 XL is no exception to that. At the front you’re seeing a 5 MP cam, which is fine for the odd selfie or for video calling or Skype, but the real deal is at the rear.

Turn the 950 XL around and you’re seeing a 20 MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics and f1.9 aperture. You’re getting triple LED flash here, as well as Lumia’s signature PureView technology, and a host of features like auto focus, touch focus, HDR and face detection as well.

If all that technical lingo leaves you reeling, the bottom line is that the 950 XL takes incredible pictures, some of the best of any mobile phone around, including in low light conditions. If you’re serious about your snaps, then the 950 XL is going to deliver.

And the Rest

There are simply too many features on the 950 XL for us to mention them all, but there are a few that deserve noting. Firstly, the 950 XL does have an iris scanner, meaning that it can scan your eye for added security when unlocking, pretty neat.

It supports wireless charging, which is always convenient for those that don’t like having cables cluttering a room. It also has fast charging technology, so you won’t have to wait too long for that battery to fill up.

Speaking of batteries, the 950 XL has a massive 3340 mAh removable battery. Even given the large screen size this means that the average user should get a solid work day of use out of all that juice.

Lumia 950 XL Black Review

No, Windows phones aren’t everyone’s choice, but the Lumia 950 XL is just too good to pass up. With incredible performance specs, tons of power, an amazing display and one of the best mobile cameras around, what’s not to love about this device? You’ll pay a pretty penny for it, but then you’re getting the best that Windows has to offer on a mobile platform.

Connectivity wise you’re getting what you’d expect. There’s WiFi, 4G, 3G and Bluetooth. Internally the 950 XL comes with 32 GB of memory, but you can add another 200 GB of external memory with a dedicated SD card slot. And as this is a Microsoft device you’ll get an additional 15 GB of cloud storage included as well.

Truth time, was there anything we didn’t like? Maybe our biggest complaint is that polycarbonate back panel, on a phone of this quality and in this price range we’d really expect to see a full metal build. However, polycarbonate is scratchproof and long lasting and keeps the weight down. Bottom line: the Lumia 950 XL is an incredible Windows phone, but more than that, it’s just an incredible phone. If you’re looking for something that’s top of the line, then check out the 950 XL today!
