About the iPhone SE 64GB Space Grey

Apple are certainly heavy hitters on the mobile market, but up until now they’ve concentrated on high end devices. But with the release of the iPhone SE the manufacturer is attempting to capture some mid range market share. And with great power and performance specs, they may be about to do just that. This is an experiment from Apple, but it looks set to be a very successful one indeed.

Why should you be anxious to get an iPhone SE? Of course, there’s that classic Apple style, but there’s plenty of power under the hood too, and an excellent rear camera to boot. Add in increased battery life and you’re looking at a great mid range device. Apple fans will love the SE, but a fair few Android and Windows users might be in for a surprise too.

Key Features on the iPhone SE

The SE couldn’t be mistaken for anything other than another iPhone model. In fact, it’s built on the metal chassis originally used on the old iPhone 5, and it’s got the same sleek lines and curved edges as its older brother. The design is, as always, minimalistic, but the metal feels premium and solid, and the neat little device sits nicely in the palm.

Aside from its obvious good looks, the SE is sporting some solid internals as well. It’s got the same top end processing power and rear camera as feature on Apple’s premium iPhone products, but it’s also got better battery life than the monster 6S iPhone, which is a definite plus.

For many the real draw here will be the price tag, and you are set to save around £250 off the price of a top end iPhone, but the SE is more than just its cost. It’s a great little mid range phone, with decent performance and sexy style too.

Power and OS

Performance is key when choosing a smart phone, but judging an iPhone can be tough. This is partly because Apple tend to be secretive about actual specs, but also because it’s difficult to compare an iOS phone with, say, an Android. That being said, the SE seems to be running a dual core 1.8 GHz processor with Apple’s new A9 chipset and around 2 GB of RAM. That results in a devices that’s not just fast, but responsive too.

Yes, it’s Apple, so yes, you’re running iOS here. You’re getting the new iOS 9.3 out of the box, giving you the better security and stability of the newest operating system version. You’ll have the familiar, intuitive OS that you know and love, plus some nice little tweaks to improve performance and functionality. Siri, for example, is more proactive now, resulting in better advice and suggestions.

If we set aside the tech talk, in practice you’re getting a fast, responsive device that’s great at multi tasking. Whilst power hungry users might notice a small slowing, regular users are going to be more than satisfied here and are unlikely to see any lag in performance.

Screen Specs

Alright, now we get to the screen, and this is one area in which Apple have made compromises to keep that price low, but stick with us for a second. Firstly, you’ve got a four inch display, which seems small when compared to the five plus inch screens on top end phones. But, and this is an important but, that’s more than enough room to easily type on screen, and it does mean that the SE is a very portable device. You can easily slip it into your pocket or bag, and at just 113 grams you’ll hardly know it’s there.

Resolution isn’t HD, you’ve got 640 x 1136 pixels, giving you around 326 PPI. But, and again an important but, in practice images on the SE are actually quite sharp, and colour reproduction in particular is very good. That’s because this is an LED backlit LCD display, complete with IPS tech for broad viewing angles.

So, the specs don’t look brilliant, but to be honest, in reality the screen on the SE is better than you’d think. Yes, there’s a noticeable difference when watching HD video, but other than that the average user is unlikely to be disappointed. The display on the SE is bright, clear and colourful, and more than does the job.

Taking Pictures

And now we come to compromise number two, but it’s not a particularly big one. The front camera on the SE is only a 1.2 MP device. Given that most of us are only going to be using that front cam for selfies and Fact Time though, that’s not really a huge issue. Besides, the rear camera more than makes up for the slightly disappointing front cam.

At the rear of the phone you’re getting the same top end camera as you’d get on the 6S iPhone. It’s a 12 MP cam, loaded down with features. There’s phase detection auto focus, 4K video, HDR, and natural lighting dual tone LED flash too. The SE can also simultaneously record 4K video and take 8 MP pictures, giving you both still and moving images of any event.

The front camera on the SE is nothing to write home about, but that rear cam is fantastic. Those specs plus Apple’s easy to use camera software mean that you’ll be taking great pictures in no time, and there’s no better iPhone camera on the market.

The Extras

There are a couple of other things that we haven’t quite covered above that need a mention here. Firstly, you’re getting a fingerprint scanner. This means added security for your hand set, but also means that you can use various digital payment services. There’s also NFC so you can make use of Apple Pay, Apple’s digital wallet.

Second, and maybe more important for most of us, is that battery. Generally, iPhone don’t get good battery life, but surprisingly the SE does. It’s got a 1624 mAh Li-Po battery on board, meaning that you should be able to get through the day without needing a juice top up. It’s rated for around 240 hours of standby time, and about 14 hours of continuous active use.

iPhone SE 64GB Space Grey Review

With so many mid range phones on shelves, deciding which is right for you can be tough, but the iPhone SE is definitely worthy of consideration. It gets great performance, thanks to top end processing power, and great battery life too, throw in a fantastic rear camera and you’re onto a winner. And if you want iOS but don’t want to spend a fortune, then this is clearly the sensible option.

When it comes to connectivity, you’ve got the usual choices: WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G. You’ve got 64 GB of internal storage, so a good amount, but remember that since this is Apple you don’t have an SD card slot, so no adding in extra memory should you need it. You will get an Apple Cloud account though, so there’s always more storage there.

Bottom line time, so what don’t we like? We’d like to see a better front cam, and we’d definitely like to see a slightly higher resolution screen. But at this price point we’d be petty to complain about these things, since they’re small but necessary compromises. The iPhone SE is a great little device that gets great performance at an affordable price, what more could we ask for? If you’re mid market shopping, then check out the iPhone SE, you won’t regret it!
