About the iPhone SE 64GB Gold

For the last decade or so, Apple have dominated the smart phone market with their iPhones. So is there really room for a new model? There is if it’s the iPhone SE, the company’s first mid market device. The SE has it all, from great performance to great styling, and it’s affordable as well. Apple are setting out to do for mid range phones what they did for top end devices, and the SE is sure to be a huge success.

Why would you want an SE? It’s got top end processing power and rear camera set, it’s got stellar battery life, and it just looks so fabulous. There are a lot of mid range phones to choose from, though this is your first iOS option, but the iPhone SE stands out from the pack, not least because it’s so good looking.

Key Features on the iPhone SE

Apple design is always minimalistic, and the iPhone SE is no exception to that. It uses the metal chassis of the older iPhone 5 model, and has the same sleek and sexy lines, with rounded corners and bezelling. The metal feels premium in the hand, the device is sturdy, and it sits very securely in the palm.

Looks aside, you’re getting some solid internal specs too. The SE sports the top end processing power and rear camera of Apple’s upper end models, but it gets far better battery life. Specs tick all the boxes, and this is one fantastic mid range device.

However, for most it’s going to be the price tag that’s the attraction on the SE. You’ll be saving around £250 when compared to top shelf iOS phones. Still, the SE does have a lot to offer as a very good mid range mobile, so if you’re shopping on a tighter budget, it definitely deserves a place on your option list.

Performance Specs

Performance is important, so let’s turn there first. It can be difficult to judge performance on an iPhone, both because Apple don’t always release exact spec info and because it’s tough to compare iOS with, say, Android. However, it looks like the SE has Apple’s new A9 chipset alongside a dual core 1.8 GHz processor and around 2 GB of RAM. That results in a phone that’s not only speedy and responsive, but that’s also great for multi tasking.

Rather obviously since this is an iPhone you’re looking at an iOS device. The SE is running the new iOS 9.3 out of the box, giving you the added security and stability of a new operating system version. Along with the familiar intuitive interface that users love, there are also some nice tweaks to essential apps. Siri, for example, is more useful and can give more proactive suggestions.

Jargon and numbers aside the bottom line is that performance on the iPhone SE is great for its price point. There’s no lag, even when running multiple processes, and its very responsive to user input. For the regular phone user, the SE will do anything you need, and do it fast.

Display Specs

We have to be honest, and Apple have made some compromises on screen specs to keep prices down. You’re getting a four inch display, which isn’t huge. However, that’s more than enough space for on screen typing, and a smaller screen does serve to make the SE more portable. Given its small size and light weight (around 113 grams), it’s easy to slide the SE into your pocket.

When it comes to resolution you’re not getting HD. The SE has 640 x 1136 pixels, giving you about 326 PPI. Those number may be misleading though, since picture quality is actually quite good. Images are sharp and precise, and colour reproduction is very good. This is an LED backlit LCD display, and it does have IPS for better viewing angles.

If you’re watching HD video you are going to notice a difference in screen quality on the SE. However, in most other cases you really won’t. The picture is good, decent, and colours are especially good, with whites being bright and blacks being deep.

Those Cameras

Again, we need to be honest, and the front cam on the iPhone SE is another compromise that Apple have made. It’s only a 1.2 MP affair. But for the odd selfie and for video calling that should be fine. Anyway, the fantastic rear camera makes up for that front cam.

At the back you’re getting the same 12 MP camera as is featured on Apple’s top end phones. It’s loaded with features, and you get HDR, phase detection auto focus, 4K video, and dual tone LED flash as well. Not only that, but the SE can simultaneously record 4K video and take 8 MP pics, so you can get moving and still pictures of any event.

We’re not in love with the front camera on the SE, but that rear camera is really something special. Couple the tech with Apple’s easy to use camera interface software and you’re going to be taking some amazing photos.

And the Rest

We do really need to talk about two other features of the SE that haven’t been mentioned in detail above. First up there’s that fingerprint scanner. This gives you more security on your device, but it also means you can use digital payment systems that require authentication. You’ve got NFC as well, meaning that you can use Apple Pay.

The big surprise though is the huge improvement in battery life, not something that iPhones have a great reputation for. The SE sports a large 1624 mAh Li-Po battery, so you should be more than able to make it through a normal day on one charge. Just as an idea, that means around 240 hours of standby time, and about 14 hours of continuous active talk time.

iPhone SE 64GB Gold Review

Nearly everyone wants an iPhone, and with the new iPhone SE even mid range shoppers now have the option. The SE has everything you could want, from great design to great performance, and it’s the most affordable iOS option out there. If you’re not willing to spend the big bucks for a top end iOS hand set, then the SE is the clear choice.

Connectivity is more or less what you’d expect, you’re getting 3G, 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth. You’re also getting 64 GB of internal storage, which is a fair amount, though there’s no SD card slot so you can’t add external storage. Apple do offer you a cloud account, however, so there’s extra storage there should you need it.

Alrighty, what didn’t we like? Screen resolution could definitely be improved, as could that front camera. However, given the SE’s low price point these are understandable compromises. The bottom line is that this device is a great mid range phone that happens to have high end styling, processor, and rear camera specs, so what more could you ask for? If you’re in the market for an affordable hand set with great performance, then the iPhone SE is the perfect choice.
