Then just take a look at our fantastic deals on the iPhone 7 Plus, 32 GB in silver below.
Phablets combine all the functions of a phone with the larger screen of a tablet, and given that Apple make both phones and tablets, it’s no surprise that they’ve added phablets to their line up. But in a niche traditionally dominated by Android, do the manufacturer have what it takes to make a competitive device? The new iPhone 7 Plus goes to show that they really do, this could be the phablet of the year.
Why should you love it? Obviously there are great performance specs, and classic Apple design. But there are also superb cameras, water resistance, longer battery life, excellent audio quality, and so much more. If you’re looking for a premium phablet, then you’ve just found your dream device, and it’s the iPhone 7 Plus.
This could only be an Apple product. It’s got the familiar slim profile, the gentle curves, the sleek edges, and the light but sturdy glass and metal unibody build that feels premium in the hand. Look closely and you’ll see a few new things though. The physical home button no longer clicks, it vibrates because it’s now a haptic feedback pad. The old antennae bands at the rear have disappeared, leaving the back panel smooth and unbroken.
Apart from legendary design, you’re getting some excellent specs. There’s a new chip set, so the 7 Plus is definitely fast, there’s new camera tech, a larger battery, there’s even improved audio. Oh, and this is the first water resistant iPhone as well.
Yes, you’re going to be spending a painful amount of money on this device, but it’s absolutely premium quality. If you want the best, you have to pay for the best, and the iPhone 7 Plus is absolutely the best.
We all want great performance from a phone, so let’s begin there. We don’t normally get exact numbers from Apple, but the 7 Plus is probably running a quad core 2.2 GHz processor unit. We do know that there’s 3 GB of RAM, and that the new A10 Fusion chip set is under the hood. Put all these elements together and you’ve got a super speedy and super responsive device.
We’re talking iOS here, since this is an Apple product, and you’ve got the new iOS10 version. This is familiar and intuitive, but has some nice new tweaks added. There’s “raise to wake,” and far better lock screen notifications as well. And the user experience has been made even better with simplified menus that look less crowded and confusing.
It shouldn’t surprise you that performance is excellent here, we’d expect nothing else from Apple, and the iPhone 7 Plus is going to be able to do anything you need with no lag and definitely no waiting time.
As a phablet the 7 Plus obviously gets a larger screen than the regular iPhone 7, and there’s a full 5.5 inches here. No, you’re not going to easily slide it into your pocket, nor are you going to be using this with one hand, but the viewing and gaming experience is excellent, and on screen typing easy. Plus, you get the 3D touch tech that premiered on the iPhone 6S last year.
Resolution wise we’re talking 1080 x 1920 pixels, 401 PPI, which is HD, though not 4K. That’s offset by the fact that this is an LED backlit, LCD screen, so colour reproduction is second to none, bright and natural. There’s the added bonus of IPS, so viewing angles are great as well.
There’s a lot of tech speak there, but in more basic terms this is a beautiful display, bright, clear and lovely to look at. And on a screen this large, anything is possible.
Alrighty, let’s talk picture taking then, and you’re getting an incredible camera set. Starting at the front there’s a 7 MP cam with HDR and auto face detection. That’s higher resolution than most front cams these days, so you’re selfies will be awesome.
Next, the rear, and here we find a dual 12 MP camera. Yes, dual. The tech behind this is very complex, but basically a dual cam means that you can zoom in and out of shots as you do with a DSLR without losing resolution or quality. Throw in quad LED flash (for perfect low light shots), HDR, panorama, and optical zoom, and we’re sold. Oh, and there’s simultaneous 4K video recording and 8 MP picture taking as well.
Phone cameras are getting better and better, but this really is an impressive camera set. You’ll take some amazing shots, and the intuitive camera interface will make photography easier than ever!
There’s more special features than we have room to talk about, but we do need to mention a special few. There is no headphone jack here, you’ll get an adaptor for your normal headphones or you can choose the wireless ear bud option. Headphones plug into the lightening port which allows faster data transfer and therefore means better sound quality. But beware, since this means you can’t charge your phone and plug in headphones at the same time!
With an IP67 rating, the 7 Plus is water resistant in depths of up to a metre for up to half an hour, so no worries about dropping it in the bath. There’s better sound quality too, since there are now dual external speakers for real stereo sound. Finally, the battery life has been improved and you can now get up to 21 hours of use per charge, which isn’t bad for such a large screened device.
