Apple have been at the top of the smart phone market for more than a decade now, and their newest niche is phablets. In general, Android dominate the phablet niche, but the iPhone 6S Plus proved a big seller, and now Apple are back with the new iPhone 7 Plus. It’s got all the performance specs you’d expect to see, but is this enough to beat Android at their own game? Apple seem to think so, and you might too.
Why should you invest in one? Yes, there’s good performance, yes, there’s a big screen. But it’s the extras that make this device, including the dual rear camera, the big battery, the awesome sound quality, and the fact that it’s water resistant. Fancy a premium handset? Then the iPhone 7 Plus will be right up your alley.
Only Apple could have designed this device. It’s got the beautiful slim profile that’s so familiar, the sleek lines, the rounded edges. And the glass and metal unibody build manages to be both light and yet solid in the hand. There are two big differences here though. First, those antennae bands are gone, the back of the phone is now a smooth, clear plate. Second, the physical home button has been replaced by a haptic feedback pad.
Looks aside, there are some satisfying internal upgrades. A new chip set and faster processor mean great speeds, there’s new camera tech, a larger battery capacity, better sound quality, and the 7 Plus is water resistant too.
This device isn’t going to come cheap, but premium quality hand sets don’t come much better than this one. If you’re a demanding user (and even if you’re not), then the iPhone 7 Plus is going to be a fantastic choice for you.
We’re looking for top end performance specs here, and the 7 Plus doesn’t let us down. Apple usually don’t give out exact numbers, but the 7 Plus appears to have a 2.2 GHz quad core processor on board. It definitely has 3 GB of RAM, and the new A10 Fusion chip set. This means that the 7 Plus is not only fast, but also very, very responsive as well.
Of course, this is an iOS device, and you’re getting the newest version here (iOS10). The interface is familiar, but there are some nice tweaks. There’s a new “raise to wake” feature, and lock screen notifications have finally been improved as well. And the interface has been simplified even further, with less crowded menus.
If you want top of the line performance, then you want the iPhone 7 Plus. It’s fast, responsive, and there’s no lag, even when you’re multi tasking. This is a real work horse of a phone, and one that even heavy users will love.
Phablets have big screens, and the iPhone 7 Plus is no exception. You’ve got a full five and a half inches of display space, which does make one handed use difficult (and you won’t slide this into the pocket of your skinny jeans). On the other hand, the viewing experience is incredible, and even on screen typing is easy rather than fiddly.
In terms of resolution you’re getting 1080 x 1920 pixels, working out to about 401 PI, so it’s HD though not full on 4K. This isn’t as much of an issue as you’d think though, thanks to the LED backlit LCD screen that gives stellar colour reproduction, and IPS which gives awesome viewing angles.
If you want a beautiful big screen, then this is what you’ve been looking for. From HD video to high end gaming, the iPhone 7 Plus makes everything look fantastic.
Excellent photography is one of the selling points of the 7 Plus, and it deserves to be. There’s an amazing camera set. The front facing cam is 7 MP with HDR and auto face detection, much higher resolution than we expect to see for a front camera. But the main action is at the rear.
At the back of the phone there’s a dual 12 MP camera, so two sensors. The tech talk is boring, so what this essentially means is that you can now zoom in on pics without losing quality, in the same way as you can with DSLR. You’ll be able to take 8 MP pics and record 4K video simultaneously, and there’s a quad LED flash for natural looking light in low light conditions. Then there’s the normal HDR, panorama mode, and optical zoom features.
Anyone that loves taking pictures will love the iPhone 7 Plus. This is a mobile photographer’s dream, and pictures come out looking fabulous, even when printed.
As you’d expect, there are plenty of extra features here, but we should single a few out. This is a water resistant phone with an IP67 rating (so it can be put into water of up to a metre in depth for up to half an hour). There’s a bigger battery, so now you can get up to 21 hours of use per charge. And rather than the traditional mono speaker there are dual external speakers for real stereo sound.
The iPhone 7 Plus does NOT have a headphone jack. You do receive an adaptor, however, should you wish to use your current headphones, and you can always opt for Apple’s wireless ear buds. Instead, headphones go into the lightening port, usually used for charging, where faster data transfer means you get better sound quality. Be aware that this means you cannot charge your phone and plug in headphones simultaneously!

It can be difficult to justify the cost of a premium hand set, since they’re just so expensive these days. But the great performance specs of the iPhone 7 Plus, along with awesome features like a dual rear camera, water resistance, and improved audio and battery life, really do mean that this is a worthy investment. For top end shoppers, there aren’t many phones that are better than the iPhone 7 Plus.
With regards to connectivity, there are the usual options: WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G, though the 7 Plus supports extra LTE bands for faster 4G speeds. You’re getting a whopping 256 GB of internal storage, which should be plenty for most users, though since there’s no SD card slot you can’t add any additional memory (but Apple give you an iCloud account for online storage).
Right, time for our complaints, and… we don’t really have any. Yes, a little more screen resolution would be nice, but the display is lovely to look at even without it. The lack of headphone jack might bother some people, but the increased sound quality makes up for that. All in all, the iPhone 7 Plus is a superb phablet, and if you want to combine great design, great performance, and great features, then this is going to be the phone for you.
