Phablets are hugely popular these days, since you get all the functions of a phone with the larger screen of a tablet. And Apple jumped onto the phablet bandwagon last year with the iPhone 6S Plus, but it’s this year’s release, the iPhone 7 Plus, that really shows what Apple is capable of. This could be one of the best phablets of the year, and Android manufacturers are going to want to watch their backs.
Why should you buy one? Obviously there’s good performance and nice design. But then there are awesome cameras, fantastic audio and sound quality, longer battery life, and the whole device is water resistant as well. If you’ve been looking for a premium phablet, then you just might want to consider the new iPhone 7 Plus, it’s great!
Only Apple could have made this phone. The full glass and metal unibody frame that’s light and still sturdy, the slim profile, the sleek edges and gentle curves, the iPhone 7 Plus screams Apple design. But there are a few changes. A haptic feedback button has replaced the more traditional physical home button, and the antennae bands have been removed from the back plate, leaving the rear of the phone glossy and smooth.
Aside from looks, there are some great internals here. The new A10 chip set equals faster speeds, there’s brand new camera tech, a bigger battery, and new dual speakers as well. Topping it all off is the fact that this is the first water resistant iPhone.
There’s a big price tag attached to the iPhone 7 Plus, but this is a premium hand set in all senses of the word. If you’re willing to invest then you’ll get one of the best phablets on shelves right now, and that’s got to be worth paying for.
You’ll be looking for great performance, and fortunately, you’ll find it here. Apple usually don’t give us exact processor numbers, but the iPhone 7 Plus seems to run a quad core 2.2 GHz processor. We do know that there’s the new A10 Fusion chip set inside and 3 GB of RAM. All of this comes together to equal a phone that’s super fast and super responsive as well.
All Apple products run iOS, and this is no exception, with the new iOS10 version on board. The operating system is still intuitive and familiar, but there have been a few changes. Lock screen notifications have been improved, menus have been simplified and decluttered. And there’s a nice new “raise to wake” feature as well.
If you want great performance then look no further. This is the flagship Apple device and it has the performance stats to match that title. There’s no lag, no wait time, just smooth, fast responsiveness.
One of the main reasons people like phablets is because of their big screens, and the iPhone 7 Plus comes in with a 5.5 inch display. Of course that means great viewing and easy typing. However, it does also mean you won’t be using this device with one hand, and sliding it into your pocket isn’t exactly easy. You’ll get the same 3D touch screen ability as first seen on the iPhone 6S as well.
Resolution comes in at 1080 x 1920 pixels, about 401 PPI, which is HD, though it’s not full on 4K HD. This is an LED backlit LCD screen, so colour reproduction is amazing, with deep blacks and bright whites, and there’s even IPS tech added for wider viewing angles.
Okay, so resolution numbers might be lower than on some high end phones, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and in reality this is one of the better screens we’ve seen this year. The picture quality is awesome, and even full HD video looks stupendous on the iPhone 7 Plus.
Onto those great cameras now, and there’s a reason that the 7 Plus is being touted as a photography phone, it’s got an amazing camera set. The front camera is a 7 MP HDR and auto face detection equipped camera, which is very high resolution for a front facing cam.
At the rear you’re getting a 12 MP dual camera, which is a big selling point. How it works is complicated, but the result of the dual cam is that you have the DSLR like ability of zooming in and out of shots without degrading the quality. Add to that HDR, panorama, optical zoom, and quad LED flash for perfect low light pics, and you’ve got a great camera. You can even simultaneously record 4K video and take 8 MP pics if you like.
If photography is your thing, then the iPhone 7 Plus is the phone for you. The camera interface is simple to use, the cameras themselves are great, and that combination means you’re going to get great pics every time.
Before we go there are a few more things that we really need to mention here. First is that the battery life has been improved over older iPhone models, and you can now get up to 21 hours of use per charge. Speakers have been revamped too, and you’ll get dual external speakers for real stereo sound. Plus, that IP67 rating means the 7 Plus is water resistant, and is safe to be submerged in up to a meter of water for up to half an hour.
Apple have ditched the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 series, and headphones now plug into the lightening port. This means you get better audio quality due to faster data transfer, though you can’t simultaneously charge your phone and plug in headphones. You’ll get an adaptor so that you can still use your current headphones, or you can go wireless if you prefer.

You’ll be dropping a lot of money if you want a high end phone, so it’s important that you make a good purchasing decision. With its great performance specs, good looks, fantastic cameras, and tons of extras like improved audio and better battery life, the water resistant iPhone 7 Plus is going to be a great buy for anyone looking for a premium hand set.
In terms of connectivity, the 7 Plus has more support for LTE bands, so you’re getting better than ever 4G service, as well as the normal WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G support. There’s 128 GB of internal memory in this model, which is a pretty good amount for most people, but you’ll be getting an iCloud account for online storage as well. Be aware that you can’t add more external memory to the 7 Plus, since it lacks an SD card slot.
Wrapping things up, and do we have any complaints? Nothing too serious. Higher screen resolution would be good, but realistically that display is pretty nice to look at anyway. Some people aren’t going to like the lack of headphone jack either. But on the whole we’re very impressed with the iPhone 7 Plus, and think that you will be too. If you want a premium phablet device, then check out the 7 Plus, you’ll love it!
