About the iPhone 7 Plus

It should come as no surprise that Apple want in on the phablet market, given that they make both phones and tablets. Their first model, the iPhone 6S Plus, was fine, really, but it’s the newest incarnation, the iPhone 7 Plus, that’s the real winner here. In a niche that’s dominated increasingly by Android, Apple is out to show that they’ve still got what it takes, and the iPhone 7 Plus is all the proof they need.

Why should you be dying to get your hands on one? Well, there’s that cool dual rear camera, for a start, and a bigger battery, and better sound quality, and water resistance as well. And all this comes with the excellent performance levels that you’d expect from an iPhone. For top of the line mobile shoppers, the top of the line 7 Plus has it all.

Key Features on the iPhone 7 Plus

Even at first glance you know this is an iPhone. It’s got classic Apple styling, with sexy lines, smooth curves, and a slim line profile. The build is glass and metal unibody, so it’s light, and yet it’s still robust and firm in the hand. Turn the device over, and you’ll see that the old antennae bands have disappeared, the rear panel is now smooth, uninterrupted glass. And that physical home button has gone too, replaced with a vibrating haptic pad instead.

Aside from its good looks, the 7 Plus has some impressive internals under the hood. There’s plenty of processing power, an astonishingly good camera set, a larger battery for more juice, and better audio quality too. This is also the first water resistant iPhone.

There’s a big price tag attached here, but this is a premium phone, and you’re certainly getting what you pay for. If you’re looking for a true flagship phone, then look no further than the awesome new iPhone 7 Plus.

Display Specs

Phablets are characterised by their big screens, and the iPhone 7 Plus features a full 5.5-inch display. While this means that one handed use is awkward (and you won’t be sliding this into the pocket of your skinny jeans), the viewing experience is incredible, whether you’re gaming, browsing or texting.

Resolution numbers are a little misleading. You’ve got 1080 x 1920 pixels (around 401 PPI), so this is HD but not 4K. But what the display lacks in sharp definition it makes up for by being a LED backlit LCD screen, with a fantastic colour reproduction from deep blacks to bright whites. And there’s IPS thrown in there too, for better than ever viewing angles.

Those resolution numbers might not look great, but you need to look at the whole package here, and the whole package is beautiful. From HD video to high-end gaming, the viewing experience on the 7 Plus is stunning.

The Performance

We’re looking for excellent performance on a high-end smartphone, and the 7 Plus doesn’t disappoint. While Apple doesn’t always give exact numbers the 7 Plus runs something along the lines of a 2.2 GHz quad core processor. It also has the new A10 Fusion chipset, and a full 3 GB of RAM as well. All of this means that it’s speedy and very responsive to your input.

Obviously, you’re getting an iOS device, and you’ll run the new iOS10 out of the box. The interface is familiar, but there are some nice new features too. There are better lock screen notifications, for example, and a new “raise to wake” feature (letting you wake your phone automatically when you lift it). Drop down menus have been decluttered and are easier on the eye.

There are no issues with performance here. The iPhone 7 Plus does everything you’ll need and then more, with no lag and no waiting.

Taking Pictures

The camera set is one of the main selling points of the 7 Plus, as well it should be. First up, there’s a full 7 MP device at the front (with auto face detection and HDR), and that should more than satisfy all your selfie and video calling needs.

Move to the back though, and you get that awesome dual 12 MP camera. This essentially lets you zoom in and out of pictures without any loss of quality, giving you more of a DSLR experience. You’ll get a new quad LED flash as well, for supreme low light level pics. Then there’s the ability to record 4K video and take 8 MP pics at the same time, and optical zoom, HDR, and panorama mode as well.

Most of us love taking pics with our mobiles, and the iPhone 7 Plus is a dream for photographers. Images are crisp and bright, and the user interface software is straightforward and easy to use. What more could you ask for?

Extra Features…

The 7 Plus has far too many additional features for us to mention them all, but there are some standouts. There’s no headphone jack here (but you can utilise Apple’s wireless ear buds, and you will get an adaptor so you can use your current headphones if you like). Headphones instead plug into the lightning charge port where they get better sound quality due to faster data transfer. This does mean that there’s no simultaneous phone charging and headphone listening, though!

This is a water resistant device, and it has an IP67 rating so that it can be submerged in up to a metre of water for up to 30 minutes. There’s a bigger battery on board, promising up to 21 hours of use per charge, despite the big screen size. Oh, and there’s better external sound as well, with dual speakers meaning you get stereo sound.

iPhone 7 Plus Review

Top end phones are a big investment, so it’s important that you make the right buying decision. But with great performance and good looks, a superb camera set and a ton of extra features, like improved audio quality and water resistance, the iPhone 7 Plus is a clear contender for best phablet of the year.

Connectivity is the usual: WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G- though more LTE bands are supported for better 4G service. Internally you’re looking at just 32 GB of storage on this model, which isn’t a ton, especially when there’s no SD card slot so you can’t add more memory. You do get online storage through an Apple iCloud account, however.

Right, any complaints? That’s tough, since we don’t really have any. If we were going to be picky we’d ask for higher screen resolution, though that display is beautiful to look at, and maybe comment that the haptic feedback home button took a little getting used to. But in truth, the iPhone 7 Plus is a really fantastic phone, and we’re a little bit in love with it. If you want the best, then this is going to be the mobile for you!
