Then check out our great deals on the iPhone 7 Plus, 128 GB in gold below!
Apple’s phablet products are fairly new on the market. A hybrid of an iPhone and an iPad, the Plus range of phones gets larger screens and generally better internals than the regular phone range. This niche has long been dominated by Android, but the release of the iPhone 7 Plus might be about to change that. Apple have finally listened, and upped battery life and screen resolution, making a top of the line device that could just be enough to let them overtake Android.
What are the selling points here? There are many. Obviously, there’s top end performance with fast speeds, and stunning design. But there’s that bigger battery, a dual rear camera, improved audio, and even water resistance. For demanding customers looking for only the best in mobiles, the iPhone 7 Plus seems to check all the boxes.
From first sight this could only be an iPhone. There’s the familiar unibody glass and metal build, which is light and yet still solid in the hand, there’s the slim profile, the sleek edges, the curved corners. But the 7 Plus does come with a couple of changes. The physical home button has been replaced by a vibrating haptic pad. The antennae bands on the back panel are gone, leaving a smooth, clean glass plate.
Looks aside, there are some nice upgrades here and some impressive specs. A new chip set means more speed, the addition of a dual rear camera means better picture taking, then there’s more battery life, improved audio, and water resistance as well.
You’ll be paying top end prices here, as you do for any Apple product, but premium quality does come at a price. And this phone is more than worth the investment if you’re looking for something that’s got some serious power and features.
Let’s start out with performance specs, since you’re going to want a phone that is fast and responsive. Apple don’t generally give us exact numbers, but the 7 Plus runs around a 2.2 GHz quad core processor. There’s definitely 3 GB of RAM on board, and the new A10 Fusion chip set as well. Combine all that and you’re getting lightening fast speeds and immediate response to input, exactly what you’re looking for in a mobile
It should come as no surprise that the 7 Plus runs iOS, and you’ll get iOS10, the latest iteration. You still have the familiar intuitiveness of the OS that you know and love, but there are a few nice new things. There’s a new “raise to wake” feature, and improvements have been made to the lock screen notifications. Plus, the interface has been simplified even further, with menus being decluttered.
There’s no question that you’re getting incredible performance here. Whatever you’re doing, the iPhone 7 Plus is more than capable of keeping up with you, and there’s no lag, no wait time at all.
As part of Apple’s phablet line, the 7 Plus obviously has a larger screen than the regular iPhone 7. You’ve got 5.5 inches of display here, so that means a fantastic viewing, typing, and reading experience. One handed use isn’t great, but that’s not what this phone is really designed for. You will also be getting the 3D touch screen that was first seen on the iPhone 6S.
Resolution numbers are HD, but not the 4K display were seeing on some top end phones. There’s 1080 x 1920 pixels, around 401 PPI, but those numbers don’t tell the whole story. That’s because the display is an LED backlit LCD screen, meaning there are bright, natural colours, along with IPS for better viewing angles.
Take away the tech talk and you’re left with a screen that’s very pleasing to the eye, with excellent colour depth and clarity. From HD film to gaming to simple web browsing, the 7 Plus is a joy to look at.
If you’re a keen photographer, then the iPhone 7 Plus is going to be a great choice for you, because the camera set is fantastic. Firstly, there’s a full 7 MP cam at the front, which is very high res for a front facing cam, and that comes with both HDR and automatic face recognition.
Moving around to the back though and there’s the much talked about dual rear camera. There are two 12 MP sensors here, and the tech is a little complicated, but in basic terms this gives you the ability to zoom in and out without losing quality, as you can with a DSLR cam. There’s also quad LED flash for great low light pics, HDR, optical zoom, and the ability to take 8 MP pictures and record 4K video at the same time.
The 7 Plus takes simply fantastic pictures. Bright, true colours, clear, sharp lines, minute detail, even when printed these shots are close to flawless.
The 7 Plus comes loaded down with special features, but we do need to single a few of those out for special mention. There is a bigger battery, and you should get up to 21 hours of use per charge on the 7 Plus. This is a water resistant model, the IP67 rating means you can submerge in up to a metre of water for up to half an hour. And there’s stereo sound, since Apple have replaced the mono speaker with dual external speakers.
Now comes the controversial part. The 7 Plus has no headphone jack. You will get an adaptor so you can use your current headphones, or you might opt for wireless options. However, headphone now plug into the lightening port, usually used for charging, where faster data transfer equals better sound. Do be aware that this means you can’t charge your phone and plug in headphones at the same time, which may be a deal breaker for some people.

Even with so many fantastic phones to choose from on today’s shelves, the iPhone 7 Plus is a real stand out. It’s just the perfect combination of looks, performance, and added extras, like that dual rear cam, that bigger battery, or the improved audio quality. If you’re shopping for a premium hand set and you want something with a large screen, then the 7 Plus is absolutely going to be your best bet.
Connectivity is the regular set of options: Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G and 4G (though extra LTE bands are supported for better 4G speeds). You’re getting 128 GB of internal memory on this model, which should be more than enough for most people. However, you won’t be adding more memory, since there’s no SD card slot (though Apple give you an online storage iCloud account).
Anything we don’t like? Not really. We still like to see better screen resolution numbers, but in reality the display looks excellent. Some people will be put off by the lack of headphone jack, but we think the improved audio quality compensates for that. On the whole, we’re very impressed with this hand set. If you want a great, premium phone that manages to combine looks, power and tons of cool tricks, then the iPhone 7 Plus is going to be for you.
