Apple make great phones, and they make great tablets too, so it’s no surprise that they entered the phablet market last year. But whilst their first attempt (the 6S Plus) was fine, their second attempt, the new iPhone 7 Plus is a real gem of a phone. If Apple wanted to prove that they’re still at the top of their game, then this is the phone that’s going to do it. In a niche dominated by Android, the 7 Plus really stands out.
What are the selling points here? Obviously there’s great performance and a large screen, but there’s also water resistance, fantastic audio and sound, a dual rear camera, and about a hundred other things. If you’re looking for a great phablet, then you need to meet the new iPhone 7 Plus, it’s a real star.
This could only be an iPhone. From it’s thin profile to it’s sleek lines, it screams Apple design. The glass and metal unibody fits securely in the hand, is light but robust at the same time, and is truly beautiful to look at. Gone are the antennae bands, the back plate is now smooth, unbroken glass. And gone too is that clicking physical home button, replaced by a vibrating haptic pad.
Yes, it’s an attractive phone, but under the covers you’re getting some great internals as well. There’s added power and speed, a top end camera set, solid screen specs and improved audio and batteyr life as well, plus the whole thing is water resistant.
The iPhone 7 Plus isn’t going to come cheap, but sometimes you just get what you pay for, and this is one of those times. For those looking for a premium hand set, the iPhone 7 Plus is a clear winner.
Performance specs are key when buying a top end phone, and though we don’t have exact numbers from Apple, it seems that the iPhone 7 Plus is running a quad core processor clocking in at around 2.2 GHz. It certainly features the new A10 Fusion chip set, and 3 GB of RAM as well. Put all that together and you’re looking at a phone that’s speedy and responsive, just as you’d expect at this price range.
Moving on to OS, and this is obviously an iOS device, running the new iOS10 out of the box. That means more stability and a touch more speed, but also some new tweaks. You get “raise to wake” to switch on your phone without pressing a button, you get better lock screen notifications, and you get less crowded, more intuitive menus. All in all, an easier user experience than ever before.
You’ll hear no complaints from us about performance here, and even the most hard core phone user isn’t going to experience a hint of lag. The iPhone 7 Plus is fast, responsive, and a joy to use.
Since the 7 Plus is a phablet it’s getting a larger screen, and you’ve got a whole 5.5 inches to play around with. That means plenty of room for typing, watching, or anything else you want to do. Though do be aware that one handed use is tough, and this device isn’t going to slide into the average pocket. You do get the 3D touch tech that premiered on the 6S as well.
In terms of resolution, you’re getting HD, with 1080 x 1920 pixels giving you around 401 PPI. That’s not the sharpest screen around, but combine it with awesome colour reproduction from the LED backlit LCD display and you’re actually getting something that’s stunning. IPS give great viewing angles too!
The screen on the 7 Plus is beautiful to look at, and will more than satisfy most people, with bright whites and deep blacks, this is a joy to behold.
Moving on to those awesome cameras, and here the 7 Plus really comes into its own. Firstly, there’s a 7 MP front cam with auto face detection and HDR, which is more than good enough for some spectacular selfies or for video calling.
At the rear you have the new dual cam tech, which means that there are two 12 MP sensors that work simultaneously, giving you the ability to zoom in and out without losing detail. Add in HDR, optical zoom, 4k video recording with simultaneous 8 MP picture taking, and a fantastic quad LED flash for low light conditions, and you’ve got yourself an unbelievable camera.
Whatever kind of pictures you like to take, the iPhone 7 Plus is going to more than do them justice. In fact, it’s tough to take a bad pic with specs like these!
There are tons of extras here, but some deserve singling out. Controversially, there’s no headphone jack here, though Apple provide an adaptor so you can use your normal headphones, and you can opt for those wireless earbuds. Headphones instead plug into the lightening charger port, where faster data transfer results in better sound quality. Be warned that this means you can’t plug in headphones and charge your phone at the same time!
You’ll get real stereo sound too, with dual external speaker, rather than the normal single speaker. And there’s more battery life, with the 7 Plus giving up to 21 hours of use per charge cycle. Finally, this is a water resistant device, with an IP67 rating meaning that it can be submerged in water up to a metre deep for up to thirty minutes.

There are plenty of phablet devices around to choose from these days, but nearly all of the are Androids. If you’re looking for something different, then the iPhone 7 Plus has a lot to offer. Great performance, fast speeds, awesome cameras, water resistance, great audio, the list goes on and on. If you’re in the market for a large, premium hand set, then the iPhone 7 Plus deserves to be top fo your list.
Connectivity is the usual: WiFi and Bluetooth, 3G and 4G, though the 7 Plus gets better 4G reception with increased LTE band support. In terms of memory you’re getting 128 GB internally, which isn’t bad for most people. But you can’t add more external memory, since there’s no SD card slot here (typical for Apple). You will get online storage though, with access to an Apple iCloud account.
