Apple premiered the first real smart phone more than a decade ago, and have been at the top of the market ever since. And there’s newest release, the iPhone 7, is as good as it gets. Sure, the manufacturer make decent phones, but the 7 has enough innovation to more than warrant the hefty price tag attached. This is just proof that Apple know phones, and it’s a stunning new hand set from the company.
What are the selling points here? Obviously there’s great performance, and then there’s classic Apple styling. But you’re also getting audio and sound improvements, longer battery life, and water resistance as well. Want a top end phone? Then the iPhone 7 is here to fulfil all your wishes, so start shopping now!
This is unmistakeably an iPhone. With it’s unibody glass and metal build (lightweight but sturdy as well), thin profile, curved edges and sleek lines, only Apple could have designed this phone. Look closely though and you’ll see that the camera bump protrudes a little more than last year’s model, and that the physical home button is now a haptic feedback pad.
Under the hood you’re getting some nice improvements. There’s more speed here, and better responsiveness, alongside a larger battery for longer life. You’ve also got water resistance, and huge improvements in audio and sound quality, plus some very solid cameras too.
Top end phones come for top end prices, but the iPhone 7 is a true premium product, and a great investment. If you want a phone that not only looks great but that also performs well, then this is going to be a clear choice for you.
Let’s first turn to that great performance, just how good is it? Well, Apple are usually reluctant to release accurate processor info, but the 7 seems to have a quad core processor on board. It certainly has 2 GB of RAM, and the newest Apple A10 Fusion chip set as well. This means that it’s very responsive to input, and very fast.
You’ve probably already guessed that the 7 is running iOS, and you get the new iOS10 out of the box, with added speed and stability. You also get a cleaner user interface, with less crowded menus. Lock screen notifications have been improved, and there’s the addition of a “pick up to wake” option as well.
You’ll hear no complaints from us about performance. We expect great things from an Apple phone, and the iPhone 7 more than delivers. You’ll get a responsive phone that’s great at multitasking, and has no hint of lag. What more could you want?
As usual, Apple have reserved their larger screens for the 7 Plus line, so the regular iPhone 7 comes in with a 4.7 inch display. However, this is the perfect size for one handed use, comfortable typing, and easy portability, since the 7 slips nicely into the pocket. Oh, and you do get the 3D touch tech first seen on the 6S iPhone.
Resolution wise the news isn’t fantastic, since the 7 still isn’t a true HD iPhone. You get 750 x 1334 pixels, working out to around 326 PPI, meaning the image lacks a little clarity and sharpness. This is made up for, however, but incredible colour resolution. An LED backlit LCD screen gives you full, bright, natural colours, and IPS gives you great viewing angles.
Whilst the resolution numbers might look a little disappointing, the truth is that the screen on the iPhone 7 is quite satisfying, and should be more than good enough for all but the most demanding of users.
For once, Apple have supplied their regular iPhone with a very solid camera set, which is nice to see. At the front there’s a 7 MP cam, a little higher resolution than we’d expect to see, and you get face auto detection and HDR with that as well.
The rear facing camera is the familiar 12 MP affair seen on the iPhone 6S, but with a few new features. The best of these is the addition of quad LED flash, which makes for excellent low light pictures. You do get the normal phase detection auto focus, panorama, and HDR, as well as the ability to record 4K video and take 8 MP pictures at the same time.
Most of us like snapping away on our mobiles, and whether you’re a true pro or a dedicated amateur, the iPhone 7 will more than satisfy your photography needs.
As a top end, flagship phone, the iPhone 7 has a ton of bells and whistles, and we can’t address all the special features here. But you should know that battery life has been improved, with the 7 offering up to 14 hours of use per charge. This is a water resistant model, its IP 67 rating meaning it can be immersed in up to a metre of water for up to thirty minutes. And the 7 has dual external speakers, rather than just one speaker, so you get real stereo sound.
There is that lack of headphone jack, which may bother some people, but Apple do include an adaptor for your regular headphones, as well as that wireless ear bud option. Headphones plug into the lightening port, which has faster data transfer and thereby gives better sound quality. But since the lightening port is also used for charging this does mean that you can’t charge your phone and listen through headphones at the same time.

There’s a lot of choice at the top end of the market, but the new iPhone 7 really deserves some serious consideration. It gets great performance, has fantastic cameras, is water resistant, and a music lovers dream with improved sound and audio. If you’re willing to invest in a flagship phone, then this is going to be an awesome choice.
You get the usual connectivity options: WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, and 4G (the 7 supports more LTE bands than ever before). This model comes with 32 GB of internal storage, which isn’t much, especially considering the lack of SD card slot which means you can’t add external storage. You will, however, have an iCloud account for online storage.
Time for our complaints, and there aren’t many. The haptic feedback home button has a bit of a learning curve, but is handy after a while. We’d like better screen resolution, though the colour reproduction really is fantastic. And that’s about it. The iPhone 7 is an all around great device, and one that most consumers are going to love.
