Apple really were the pioneers of smart phones as we know them, and since the first release, more than a decade ago, iPhones have top best seller lists all over the world. But it’s not easy to keep improving year after year, and more recent releases have seems a little stale. Until now. The iPhone 7 is classic Apple, but it’s also full of new features that make it far more competitive against the Android market, which is good news for Apple.
Why should you buy an iPhone 7? Yes, it gets excellent power and performance and it looks great, that shouldn’t even need to be said. But it’s also got a bigger battery, better sound quality and audio, great cameras, and it’s even water resistant. Anyone looking for a top of the line phone is going to love this hand set.
This is clearly and unmistakeably an iPhone. It’s got a super skinny profile, sleek, sexy lines, and gentle curved edges. It’s that classic unibody glass and metal design that fits so nicely in the hand, light and yet robust. Look closely and you’ll see that the camera bump protrudes a little more than on the last model. And that physical home button is gone, replaced by a haptic feedback pad instead.
So the iPhone 7 is good looking, but it’s got some impressive internals as well. There’s more power and speed, obviously, but there’s also some neat new camera features, and improved audio with dual speakers. Plus, this is the first water resistant iPhone.
We can’t lie, this is going to be a hefty investment, as are most iPhones, but you’re really getting the quality that you’re paying for. The combination of great looks and great performance means that this is going to be a big hit with Apple fans.
Let’s turn first to that performance, and as always, Apple haven’t released exact processor specs, though we’re confident that there’s quad core processing here. What we do know for sure is that there’s 2 GB of RAM and that the 7 is running the new A10 Fusion chip set. All this essentially means that your phone is very fast and very responsive, just what you’re looking for.
This is Apple, so you’re running iOS, and in this case it’s the newest iOS10 version. You’re getting added speed and stability, of course, along with some nice new things, such as the ability to pick up your phone to wake it, rather than needing to press a button. Lock screen notifications have been improved, and menus have been decluttered as well, giving a fresher, cleaner look to the OS.
All technical jargon aside, this is a very solid phone when it comes to performance. You’ll get more than enough speed, even when multi tasking, and there’s no lag at all. What more could you be looking for?
The 7 is the smaller, regular line of new iPhone (the 7 Plus phablets get bigger screens), and you’re getting 4.7 inches of display space. This is almost the perfect size, letting you easily use it one handed, easily slip it into a pocket, and easily type on screen.
Size aside, resolution numbers don’t look brilliant on paper. You’re still not getting a true HD screen, with only 750 x 1334 pixels (about 326 PPI), so images aren’t as sharp as we’d like to see. However, colour reproduction is excellent with an LED backlit LCD screen that gives amazing depth of colour, and IPS for great viewing angles.
Don’t be too disappointed with those resolution numbers, since the truth is that the iPhone 7 has a very nice screen, and you’re unlikely to notice much difference between it and something higher res. Colours are so natural and bright that they more than make up for any lack of sharpness.
We all love taking pictures with our mobiles, and here the iPhone 7 really has you covered with a great camera set. The 7 MP front cam is very high resolution for a device that’s going to be used for selfies and video calling, and it comes with HDR and auto face detection.
Move around to the back and there’s the familiar 12 MP camera seen on the iPhone 6S, but there are some nice tweaks added here. By far the best of these is the quad LED flash that allows great pictures even in severely low light conditions. You get all the usual suspects as well: panorama mode, HDR, phase detection auto focus, and the ability to record 4K video and take 8 MP pictures at the same time.
If you like snapping away with your mobile, and who doesn’t these days, then the iPhone 7 is going to be a great buy for you. Pictures are clear, sharp and beautifully coloured, impressing amateurs and pros alike.
There are tons of extras here, and we can’t get to all of them, but there are a few we should mention. Battery life has been improved, with the 7 now offering up to 14 hours per charge. There are now dual speaks, rather than just one, for great external sound. And this is a water resistant model, its IP67 rating guaranteeing that it can be immersed in water of up to a metre in depth for up to thirty minutes.
The big talking point is the lack of headphone jack, but Apple do provide you with an adaptor in the box so you can still use your regular headphones. You could also invest in those wireless ear buds. However, headphones plug into the lightening charge port, which due to faster data transfer gives you better sound. But this does mean that you can’t simultaneously listen to headphones and charge your phone.

There are plenty of premium hand sets to choose from, but Apple’s new iPhone 7 is top of the list. With beautiful design and great performance, as well as improved audio to please even the most serious of music lovers, this is an awesome phone, and it’s water resistant too. Sure, it’s going to cost you, but that could be worth paying if you want the best.
For connectivity there are the normal options, so WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G, though the 7 now supports even more LTE bands. You’ll be getting 128 GB of internal storage on this model, which should be more than enough for most people. But do remember that you won’t be able to add any more storage since there’s no SD card slot. You do get an iCloud internet storage account, however.
Time for our complaints, and we really don’t have anything too serious. It would be nice to see higher screen resolution, but whatever the numbers say picture quality on the 7 is actually quite good. This is an expensive device, but then Apple phones always are. The bottom line is that this is a wonderful hand set, and if you’re in the market for a flagship phone then you could definitely do a lot worse than the iPhone 7.
