Apple have been top of the mobile market for well over a decade, and in that time have released some truly revolutionary tech. But some might say that the more recent releases have been somewhat less exciting. The new iPhone 7 is set to change all that, however, with a slew of upgrades and some never before seen changes. This is going to be a big seller for Apple, and is a serious contender for phone of the year.
Why should you pay a hefty price for one? There’s plenty of speed and power, and performance is excellent, plus this is a good looking hand set. But you’re also getting a water resistant device with fantastic audio and sound quality, and better than ever battery life. In fact, it’s hard not to want the new iPhone 7, it really is just that good.
This could only be an iPhone. The glass and metal unibody build makes for a phone that’s sturdy and yet light weight, and there are all the hallmarks of Apple styling: a slim profile, sleek lines, sexy curves. But the observant will notice that the camera bump is more pronounced, and that the home button is no longer physical but is instead a haptic feedback pad.
Inside that beautiful exterior there are some impressive internals. A new chip set means more speed and power, there are some nice new camera features, as well as huge improvements in sound quality and audio. Plus, there’s a bigger battery and this is a water resistant device as well.
As with all Apple products you’ll be paying a premium price, but the iPhone 7 really does live up to that big price tag. This is the best iPhone yet, and it’s a hand set that Apple fans and even some Android fans are really going to love.
Let’s start off talking about the screen, and remember this is the regular iPhone 7, not the larger screened phablet iPhone 7 Plus. So you’re getting 4.7 inches of display real estate here, and that’s a fairly good size. Typing is comfortable, one handed use is fine, and the hand set fits neatly into most pockets. You are also getting the 3D screen tech that premiered on the iPhone 6S as well.
Resolution numbers are a little disappointing at just 750 x 1334 pixels (about 326 PPI), so not true HD quality. The image does suffer from a small lack of sharpness, but that’s made up for with excellent colour reproduction. An LED backlit LCD screen makes for natural colours, deep blacks and bright whites, and IPS means you get fantastic viewing angles as well.
There are better screens on the market, to be honest, but the majority of people won’t notice much difference, and again that colour reproduction is very, very good, particularly in photographs.
Moving on to performance, and the 7 isn’t going to let you down here. We’re not getting exact processor specs from Apple, but apparently there is quad core processing power here. We do know that the 7 has the new A10 Fusion chip set and 2 GB of RAM. This results in a phone that’s very fast and extremely responsive, exactly what we’d expect at the top of the range.
This is an Apple phone, so obviously it’s going to be an iOS device, and it runs the newest iOS10 version out of the box. This gives you better speeds and stability, but a fair few new features too. You have a new “pick up to wake” option, as well as better lock screen notifications. And the user interface has been slimmed down, with far less crowded pull down menus.
Even high end users are going to be more than happy with performance on the iPhone 7. There’s no lag, even when multitasking, and immediate response to input. This is a real work horse of a phone, and great even for the hard core user.
Most people use their mobiles as cameras, rather than investing in a separate digital camera, and if this is the case you’ll be glad to know that the iPhone 7 has you covered with a great camera set. The front camera (for selfies and video calling) is a 7 MP device, with HDR and face auto detection. But the main action is at the rear.
The rear facing camera is more or less the same 12 MP cam seen on the 6S model, with a few nice new features. The best of these is the addition of quad LED flash, so even very low light conditions will photograph perfectly. Obviously there’s panorama, HDR, phase detection auto focus and the like, plus you can record 4K video and take 8 MP pics at the same time.
Whether you’re a budding amateur or a true professional, the camera set on the iPhone 7 is sure to please. It’s tough to take a bad picture on cameras this good!
There are a ton of special features on the iPhone 7, and we don’t have room to mention all of them, but some deserve a special mention. This is a water resistant phone, for a start, with IP 67 rating (can be immersed in water up to a metre in depth for up to thirty minutes). There’s a bigger battery giving up to 14 hours of use per charge. There are also dual external speakers, rather than the normal single speaker, so you get real stereo sound.
The iPhone 7 has no traditional headphone jack, though you will get an adaptor if you prefer using your current headphones. Apple off the option of wireless ear buds, or you can plug headphones into the lightening port (which transfers data faster and therefore give you better sound). All this does mean that you can’t plug in your charger and your headphones at the same time though, so be warned!

There are tons of great top of the line phones to choose from, but Apple’s newest addition, the iPhone 7, might just be the best of the bunch. You get great performance, awesome design, solid cameras, and plenty of extras (like water resistance), so you’re really ticking all the boxes. If you’re looking for the best of the best, then check out the iPhone 7!
Connectivity is the standard assortment: WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G (with support for even more LTE bands than before). You’re getting a whopping 256 GB of internal memory, which really is a lot, though there’s no SD card slot so you can’t add more. Plus, Apple give you an iCloud account for online storage should you need it.
Right, so, what are our complaints? It would be nice to see better screen resolution at this price point, but truth be told the screen is better than the numbers imply. The haptic feedback button also takes a bit of getting used to. On the whole though, it’s hard to fault the iPhone 7. This is the fastest and best iPhone yet, and if iOS is your thing, then this is the best that you’re going to get. And even if you’re an Android fan, you might want to check out the new iPhone if you’re looking for a great top end device.
