With the release of a new iPhone every year it can be difficult to justify the price of an upgrade. Apple have been slack as of late, with new models having only the bare minimum of upgrades. But all that changes with the new iPhone 7. All the power and performance that you love, alongside a whole bunch of new features. This is sure to be topping best seller lists this year, and is proof that Apple are still at the top of their game.
Why should you want one? Power, speed, great cameras, stunning design, all those are givens with an iPhone. But you’re also getting water resistance, better battery life, and vastly improved audio and sound quality. If you want a premium phone, then the iPhone 7 ticks all the boxes, it’s a fantastic device and one that everyone can love.
Unmistakably this is an iPhone. From it’s smooth curved corners to its sleek lines to its thin profile, this could only be Apple design. The unibody metal and glass build manages to be both lightweight and robust, with great hand feel. You’ll see that the camera bump sticks out a little further than on the 6S model though, and that physical home button is gone, replaced by a haptic feedback button instead.
Looks aside, there are some great internals here. You’re getting a new chip set and more speed, solid cameras, improved audio quality, a larger battery, and all new features like water resistance. Responsiveness is second to none, and the user experience here is stellar.
You’ll be paying premium prices for the iPhone 7, but it is quite simply a premium product. There’s a lot to love about the new iPhone, and this is sure to be a top seller, and more than satisfying as an investment.
Performance is always a key issue, so we’ll begin there. As usual we’re not getting exact processor specs from Apple, though the hand set seems to run a quad core processor. What we do know is that there is 2 GB of RAM, as well as the new A10 Fusion chip set. Put all that together and you’ve got a phone that’s very responsive to input and lightening fast.
As an Apple product, the iPhone 7 is an iOS device, and you get the new OS version (iOS10) out of the box. This gives you a simplified user interface, with less crowded menus, as well as new features like “pick up to wake,” and better lock screen notifications. Plus, a newer OS version always means faster speeds and better stability.
Whether you’re a high end user or a casual one, you’ll find that performance on the iPhone 7 is super fast and responsive. There’s no danger of lag or freezing here, and the 7 can take absolutely anything that you throw at it.
There is a phablet version of the 7 (called the 7 Plus) with a larger screen, so the regular 7 comes in with a 4.7 inch screen, slightly smaller than most top end hand sets. However, this is a great size, giving you plenty of room for typing, whilst still being easy to put in your pocket and easy to use one handed.
In terms of resolution you’re not getting full, real HD here, with only 750 x 1334 pixels, so around 326 PPI. Images lack a little sharpness and clarity when compared to other high end phones. What you do get is great colour reproduction with an LED backlit LCD screen, and great viewing angles with IPS technology.
We’ll be honest and say this isn’t the best screen we’ve seen, but it is beautiful to look at and should more than satisfy most users. The natural colours in particular are noteworthy, especially when taking photographs.
And speaking of photographs, the 7 comes with a very solid camera set, surprising for an Apple device. There’s a 7 MP front facing camera, perfect for selfies and video calling, and that comes with HDR and face detection as well.
The rear camera is more or less the same 12 MP device seen on the iPhone 6S. However, there’s the nice addition of quad LED flash, which means even low light pics come out perfectly. You’ll get the usual panorama, phase detection auto focus, HDR etc. as well, plus the 7 can record 4K video and take 8 MP pictures at the same time.
Nearly all of us these days use our mobile for photography, and the 7 is more than up to the job, whether you’re a pro or an amateur, you won’t be disappointed.
Of course, you’re getting plenty of extra features, and we can’t possibly mention all of them, though there are some things you should know. Battery life has been improved, with the 7 promising up to 14 hours of use per charge. The device is also water resistant (at IP6 rated it’s safe in water up to a meter deep for up to thirty minutes). Apple have also abandoned the traditional mono speaker in favour of dual external speakers for true stereo sound.
This device has no 3.5 headphone jack, though you will receive an adapter for your normal headphones. You may also opt for Apple’s wireless ear buds. Headphones plug into the lightening jack and get faster data transfer which results in better sound quality. This does mean, however, that you can’t plug in headphones and charge your phone at the same time, which may be a deal breaker for some people.

There’s a lot of choice at the top end of the market, but the new iPhone 7 really deserves some serious consideration. It gets great performance, has fantastic cameras, is water resistant, and a music lovers dream with improved sound and audio. If you’re willing to invest in a flagship phone, then this is going to be an awesome choice.
You get the usual connectivity options: WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, and 4G (the 7 supports more LTE bands than ever before). This model comes with 32 GB of internal storage, which isn’t much, especially considering the lack of SD card slot which means you can’t add external storage. You will, however, have an iCloud account for online storage.
Time for our complaints, and there aren’t many. The haptic feedback home button has a bit of a learning curve, but is handy after a while. We’d like better screen resolution, though the colour reproduction really is fantastic. And that’s about it. The iPhone 7 is an all around great device, and one that most consumers are going to love.
