Launching a new phone every year can make it difficult to surprise the buyer with big new upgrades, but if anyone can do it, Apple can. And they have. The new iPhone 6S Plus is a big step up from the older iPhone 6 Plus, and one that’s got a whole lot of upgrades to justify that price tag. Apple can afford to make a few mistakes here and there, but with the 6S Plus they’re really approaching perfection. What’s to love about the 6S Plus? The new A9 chip set means that it’s the fastest iPhone around, so performance is excellent. But it’s that 3D touch screen that’s the real selling point, and it’s truly amazing. Oh, and add in a couple of awesome cameras too, just for fun. Buying a phablet is a big investment, but the iPhone 6S Plus is really deserving of that price tag, it’s just that incredible.
From first sight you know that this is an iPhone. There are sleek lines and smooth corners, and a minimalistic feel to the whole thing. Yes, it’s a tad thicker than normal, but that’s because of the new screen tech. But you’re getting a full glass and metal unibody, so build quality is excellent, and hand feel is truly premium. Aside from appearance, the internals of the 6S Plus are equally impressive. The 3D touch display is really cutting edge tech, and the A9 chip set is super lightening fast. There have been camera upgrades too, so photo lovers take note. Buying phablets is expensive, as is buying Apple products, but there’s a reason you’re paying the big bucks. This is probably the best phablet device on shelves right now, and it’s going to wow you, no question.
We’ll take performance first, since that’s our priority in a smart phone. The 6S Plus appears to be running something like a dual core 2 GHz processor, though we can’t be sure because Apple doesn’t really release figures like this. What’s important though is that A9 chip set, which makes the 6S Plus around 70% faster than the older 6 Plus. Throw in 2 GB of RAM and you’re looking at a phone that’s fast, responsive to input and great at multi tasking as well. This is an iPhone, so it’s iOS. Out of the box you’ll run the latest version: iOS9. There’s a familiar feel here, and use is as intuitive as always, though there are a few new tweaks. There’s a new font option, and a low power mode for battery saving. There’s also a cool “back to previous app” icon that means navigation is easier than ever. Even power users are going to be satisfied here. Performance on the 6S Plus is second to none, and even when you’re running multiple apps the device still responds perfectly.
What exactly is a 3D touch screen then? Essentially this is just added sensitivity, and the display now detects the difference between a touch and a press and reacts accordingly, giving you more functionality. It’s kind of the same as the right and left click buttons on a mouse or trackpad, and means that you just get more options. In terms of size, the 6S Plus sports a 5.5 inch display, which is more than roomy enough for comfortable typing and great viewing. Onwards to resolution. This is a 1080 x 1920 pixel display, making for about 401 PPI. It’s also Apple’s signature Retina display, with LED backlighting and IPS. Add all of this up and you’re getting something really incredible. Colour reproduction is perfect, images are sharp and focussed, viewing angles are perfect. This is one killer display. For picture quality alone we’d rank this as one of the best screens on the market, but with the addition of 3D touch the display on the 6S Plus is truly unbelievable, trust us!
So, those new cameras then. We’re seeing a lot of upgrades in the photo department, and the first is the 5 MP front facing camera. For FaceTime and selfies, that’s some very decent resolution. Oh, and it’s got screen flash too, so the screen of your phone lights up to act as a flash for the camera. At the rear there’s a 12 MP camera. Yes, you read that right. The old 8 MP cam that Apple depended on for so long has gone. And there are some swanky cam features too. Optical image stabilisation, phase detection autofocus, dual LED flash, 4K video recording, 4609 x 2592 resolution, the list goes on… Everyone likes taking pictures with their phones these days, and most of us have done away with digital cameras altogether, and if you’re a phone photographer then the 6S Plus is going to be right up your street!
It would be remiss of us not to mention a few more features on the 6S Plus, because there are some cool ones. Siri has had an update, and can now respond to more complex demands, though she’s still as humorous as ever. There’s a new camera mode on board too, called Live Photo. This lets you take a video and a picture at the same time, with the photo being shot in the middle of a three second video. The result is a still photo along with a sort of mini moving photo, which is pretty cool. Finally, there is a fingerprint scanner, so you’ll get a bit more security, and there’s Apple Pay as well. This is Apple’s digital payment and wallet service.

When it comes to phablets, there are none that tick all the same boxes in quite the same way as the iPhone 6S Plus. You’re getting awesome power and performance, great cameras, and an unbelievable screen as well. What’s not to love here?
Connectivity is what you would expect (3G, 4G, WiFi, and Bluetooth), though with advanced LTE you should be seeing slightly faster mobile data speeds, which is nice. Internally, there’s a decent 64 GB of built in memory, but there’s no SD card slot, so no adding more.
What about the negatives here? That’s tough. The price tag is steep, but with such high build quality and cool features it’s hard to complain about that. Usually we bemoan the lack of an SD card slot, but that’s standard for Apple, and besides, 64 GB is a fair amount of memory. On the whole, we love the iPhone 6S Plus. It’s an incredible phone, one that’s in high demand, and one that will satisfy even demanding mobile shoppers.
