S series iPhones aren’t always the best of upgrades, and many people prefer to wait for the next number series to come out before buying. But with the new iPhone 6S Plus, that would be a huge mistake. With a full list of upgrades, from chip set to cameras to a whole new screen, the 6S Plus is an amazing device. Apple once again prove that their king of the market for a reason, and this is this year’s must have phablet. Why should you want one? That huge 3D touch screen is going to be a big selling point for a lot of people, and the better cameras are a big improvement over the iPhone 6 Plus. And then there’s tons more speed with that new A9 chip set. If you want the best phablet device around, then the iPhone 6 Plus is a clear choice.
It must be said that the 6S Plus is a little thicker around the waist than the 6 Plus, mostly because of the new screen tech, but that serves to make the 6S model that much more robust. Other than that, this is the iPhone that you know and love, with sleek lines and minimalist styling. It is a full glass and metal unibody build, which means premium hand feel as well as stunningly good looks. Under the covers you’re getting some nice specs too. There’s a new chip set on board, which makes the 6S Plus faster than ever, along with some nice camera upgrades, and then there’s that new 3D touch screen tech as well. Toss in a couple of added features, and you’ve got a winner. The iPhone 6S Plus is going to cost you a fair bit, but with high build quality and cutting edge tech, you’re certainly getting what you pay for. If you’re looking for a top end phablet, then the 6S Plus is really leader of the pack.
We’ll start with the screen, since that’s something new. What is 3D touch? Well, the display is basically more sensitive, meaning that it knows the difference between touch and press, and reacts differently to each. This means that you get more functionality, in much the same way as you do with a right and left click on a computer mouse, for example. Size wise you’re looking at a cool 5.5 inches, which isn’t the largest phablet around but definitely makes for great viewing and easy typing. Resolution numbers aren’t bad, you’re looking at 1080 x 1920 pixels, so around 401 PPI. But more than that, this is a Retina display, and one with LED backlighting and IPS. All of this means in practice that picture quality is amazing. Lines are sharp, images are crisp, viewing angles are incredible, and colour reproduction is perfect. This has to be, hands down, one of the best displays on the market right now for picture quality alone. Add in that 3D tech and you’re getting a screen that’s second to none, and one that’s sure to please.
Comparing processor specs between Apple and other manufacturers never really works, since the tech is different, and Apple rarely release numbers anyway. But the 6S Plus is running the new A9 chip set, which Apple claims is up to 70% faster than the A8. Add to that 2 GB of RAM, where the regular 6 Plus had only 1 GB, and you’re looking at a device that’s not only fast and responsive, but that’s also great at multi tasking. Yes, this is Apple, yes, it’s iOS. You will be running the latest iOS9 out of the box though. This combines the familiar intuitive interface that you already know with a few new features. There’s a new font choice, and a low power mode for battery saving. There’s also a nice “back to previous app” icon that lets you easily switch between apps. In terms of performance this is the best iPhone yet, and it’s one of the fastest phones around. Whatever you throw at it, the iPhone 6S Plus is going to take it and just ask for more!
At last we get decent new cameras on an iPhone, and it’s about time too. At the front you’re now getting a 5 MP cam, so FaceTime and selfies are going to be great, and it’s got a screen flash option too. This just allows the screen to light up to act as a flash for that front camera. Moving around to the back and the old 8 MP camera has finally been retired, replaced by a nice 12 MP device. There’s some cool features too. You’ll get optical image stabilisation as well as phase detection autofocus, dual LED flash and 4K video recording. All that and 4608 x 2592 pixel resolution as well. For pros and amateurs alike these camera upgrades are going to be a big draw. The 6S Plus takes fantastic pictures, and ones that will be the envy of all your friends!
We’re not finished yet, there’s a few more things that deserve a mention here. You will get a fingerprint scanner, which seems to have become standard for Apple now. And along with that you’ll be getting Apple Pay, Apple’s digital wallet and payment service. Siri has seen a few upgrades too, and is now more capable than ever of responding to complex instructions, making her a lot more useful. And she’d just as humorous as before, so you won’t be missing out. Last, but not least, there’s a neat new camera mode too. Live Photo allows you to simultaneously record video and snap a picture. The video starts recording and 1.5 seconds later a picture is taken, a further 1.5 seconds and the video stops recording. This results in both a still image and a short moving image as well, which is pretty cool.

Phablets have been around for a while now, and most people appreciate the extra screen space, but the iPhone 6S Plus is one of the best we’ve seen. It’s fast, responsive, takes great pictures, and has an absolutely amazing screen, which all add up to an incredible phone.
In terms of connectivity, there are the usual suspects: WiFi, 3G, 4G and Bluetooth. You should be seeing some faster data speeds with advanced LTE tech though. Internally you’re getting 16 GB of storage, which isn’t much, and there’s no SD card slot, so you’ll need to use that memory wisely or risk slowing your phone down.
Bottom line time: anything we don’t like? That lack of SD card slot with only 16 GB of memory is a bit of a pain, though you could just switch to online cloud storage. And the price tag is a bit hefty, though this is a premium product. Other than that, we’re pretty satisfied with Apple’s latest offering. The iPhone 6S Plus really has it all, and it’s a purchase that you’re not going to regret!
