Apple make great phones, and they make great tablets, so it stands to reason that they’re going to make a great phablet as well. Their newest offering is the iPhone 6S Plus, and it’s fantastic. Everything in sight has been upgraded, resulting in a phone that’s faster, better and cooler than ever before. We can depend on Apple to make good devices, but the 6S Plus is more than that, it’s pretty close to perfection. Why should you be dying to get one? Well, that new chip set makes it the fastest iPhone yet. Then there are the camera upgrades which make pictures better than ever. But it’s the 3D touch display that’s the real seller here, and it is just as cool as it sounds. Want the best phablet around? That’s going to be the iPhone 6S Plus!
Okay, the 6S Plus is a little thicker than you might be used to, but that’s because of the new screen tech. In every other way though, this is clearly an Apple product. There are smooth lines, rounded corners, and minimalism everywhere. There’s also a high quality metal and glass unibody build, which means solid, premium hand feel and a phone that’s one of the best looking around. Inside that cover you’re getting more than you could ever wish for. There’s a new A9 chip set for speed, new cameras for incredible photos, and a 3D touch display, the first of its kind, for greater funtionality. All in all, this is an incredible device. From performance to looks to the little added extras, the iPhone 6S Plus is going to be topping wish lists this year, and for good reason: it’s maybe the best phablet on the market.
3D touch display is completely new, and it’s actually very awesome. The screen has higher sensitivity, which means it knows the difference between you touching it and pressing it, and acts differently for each action. Think of it like the right and left buttons on a mouse and you’ll get the idea. This means that you have a whole new set of options for using that display, and it’s quite cool. 3D aside, you’re getting a 5.5 inch display, which is pretty big so typing is comfortable, but it does mean the 6S Plus isn’t terribly easy to put in your pocket. What about resolution? Well, you’re getting 1080 x 1920, so around 401 PPI, but that doesn’t tell the whole story. This is an Apple Retina display, and it’s got IPS and LED backlighting too. This means that you’re getting crisp, clear images, with true colour reproduction and great viewing angles as well, whatever the numbers might say to the contrary. We’ll be honest and say that this is one of the best displays we’ve ever seen. Everything, from HD video to mobile gaming, is just flawless, and add in that 3D touch and you’ve got a screen that’s not just pretty but functional too.
So, Apple don’t really release performance numbers, but it appears that the 6S Plus is running something like a dual core 2 GHz processor. Whether that’s true or not, there is a new A9 chip set, and that, Apple Claim, makes the 6S Plus up to 70% faster than the 6 Plus. That difference is actually quite noticeable, and add in 2 GB of RAM and you’re getting a phone that’s super fast AND good at multi tasking as well. Yes, it’s iOS, it’s Apple, you have no choice. And you’re running the latest iOS9 out of the box. You’ll have the familiar intuitive Apple interface, but you’re getting a couple of new things as well. We’re particular fans of the added “back to previous app” icon, which makes switching apps a breeze, and then there’s the low power mode, which helps improve battery life. Bottom line for performance? This is one fast little beast of a phone. That extra speed is especially noticeable when booting up or opening apps, and the 6S Plus is very responsive as well, not matter how many programmes you run simultaneously.
We’re doing our happy dance because Apple have finally given us some new cameras. The front, video calling cam is now a 5 MP device (which makes for great selfies), and it’s got screen flash. This lets the screen of the phone briefly light up to act as a flash. Around the back there’s a 12 MP camera. That’s right, the old 8 MP cam has finally been retired, and about time too. What kind of features are you getting? The full list, including phase detection autofocus, optical image stabilisation, 4K video recording, dual LED flash, and 4609 x 2592 pixel resolution as well. If you like snapping away with your phone then the good news here is that the cameras on the iPhone 6S Plus are awesome. They’re a big improvement on the ones on the 6 Plus, and you’ll be taking some fantastic pictures!
We do have a few other notes about the 6S Plus apart from all the above. There’s a fingerprint scanner for added security, which seems to have become standard for Apple now. There’s also Apple Pay for digital payment services, which is pretty convenient. We’re loving a new camera mode too, which Apple call Live Photo. This lets you take a picture and a video at the same time, resulting in a 3 second movie clip plus a still photo, which is pretty cool to have. Lastly, there’s Siri, who’s seen some upgrades too. She can now respond to complicated commands like never before, though she’s kept that sarcastic sense of humour.

Justifying the price of a top of the line phablet can be tough, but the iPhone 6S Plus is definitely value for money. All that speed, great cameras, and that 3D touch display as well, what more could you ask for from a new phone?
Connectivity is the normal 3G, 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth, though with advanced LTE you should be getting some faster 4G and WiFi speeds. Internally you’re getting 16 GB of memory, which isn’t a lot especially considering that there’s no SD card slot so you can’t add more. You’re going to need to watch memory space closely on the 6S Plus.
So, what don’t we like? Hm, that lack of internal memory is a little disappointing, and we would like an option to add more. But then, you can use the iCloud for online storage instead. That aside, we’re actually loving the new iPhone. It’s got everything we could ask for in terms of looks and performance, and that makes the iPhone 6S Plus a winner with us!
