Apple don’t generally give us much of an upgrade with an S series phone, but the iPhone 6S Plus is the exception to that rule. It’s been upgraded pretty much everywhere, and that means it’s a big step up from the regular iPhone 6 Plus. Apple make great products, including great phones and tablets, so it’s just common sense that they make great phablets too. They’re at the top of their game, and the 6S Plus just proves that. Why should you be aching to get one? The big, 3D touch display is going to be a big selling point, as are the new camera upgrades. Add in a new chip set that makes the 6S Plus faster than ever, and you’ve got a winner. If you’re phablet shopping, then this is going to be a no brainer for you. The iPhone 6S Plus is the greatest phablet device we’ve seen.
The 6S Plus is unmistakeably an Apple product, with it’s sleek lines, curved corners and minimalist look. It is a little thicker than usual, however, thanks to that new screen tech (though in our opinion that just makes it more robust). You’re getting a full glass and metal unibody build, so there’s a feel of premium quality as well as those good looks. Appearance aside, you’re also getting some great internals. The new A9 chip set is faster than ever, a host of camera upgrades, that cool new 3D touch display, and some nice new features all add to the package. You’re really get everything here. You’ll pay a fair chunk of change for a phablet, so you’re going to want to make sure that you’re getting your money’s worth, and with the iPhone 6S Plus you certainly will be. With looks, power and performance, you can’t go wrong!
Performance specs are the first thing that we look for in a great phone, and it seems that the 6S Plus is running something like a 2 GHz dual core processor, though Apple haven’t definitively said this. What matters most though is that new A9 chip set, which should make the 6S Plus up to 70% faster than the older 6 Plus. There’s also 2 GB of RAM here, so you’re getting responsiveness and good multi tasking ability as well. Given that this is Apple it will surprise no one that the 6S Plus is an iOS device, and you’re getting iOS9, the newest OS version. 9 still looks and feels the same, but there are some subtle new features. One of these is low power mode, which should help save some battery juice. And there’s also a nice “back to previous app” button, which makes phone navigation that much easier. If you want performance, you’re definitely getting it with the 6S Plus. Speeds are great, responsiveness is fast, and that OS is just so easy to use and intuitive. Even power users should be satisfied here.
Moving on to that 3D touch screen, just what exactly is it? Added sensitivity means that the display now knows the difference between a touch and a press, and reacts accordingly in different ways. This means you get double the functionality (in the same way as you do with a computer mouse that has right and left buttons). It’s pretty useful, though strange at first. Size wise you’re getting 5.5 inches, big enough for comfortable typing and viewing, though maybe a little too big to slide into your pocket. The resolution numbers are fine, it’s a 1080 x 1920 pixel screen, giving you about 401 PPI. However, that’s not the whole story. This is a signature Apple Retina display, with IPS and LED backlighting as well. In essence, that means that you’re getting close to the perfect display. Colours are bright and true, viewing angles are great, images are sharp, focussed and clear. Is this the best display we’ve ever seen? It could well be. For picture quality alone this display is worth the price, but add in that 3D touch tech and we’re completely sold.
In general, iPhones have pretty good cameras, but as of now, they have great cameras, thanks to some nice new upgrades. The front video calling camera is now 5 MP, and has screen flash as well (which lets the display of the device act as a flash for the camera). At the back the old 8 MP camera is gone, replaced by a 12 MP device, which has been a long time coming. There are some fancy features too, things like optical image stabilisation, dual LED flash, phase detection autofocus, 4K video recording and some very god 4609 x 2592 resolution. If you’re looking for great pictures, then look no further. The cameras on the 6S Plus are excellent, and you’ll be taking some awesome snaps in no time!
We’re not quite done, there are a few more things up for discussion. The first of these is that you do have a fingerprint scanner, so there’s more security than average there. You’ve also got Apple Pay, the digital payment and wallet service. Siri has been improved too, though she was already pretty awesome. She now responds to complex demands, so rather than saying “find pictures of mum” you can say “find pictures of mum taken last year,” for example. And then there’s a neat new camera mode as well. Live Photo let’s you take a picture and a video at the same time. A three second video is shot, with a picture taken right in the middle of that duration, resulting in a still photo and a cool sort of “moving” photo too.

Yes, there are other phablets, but there are none with quite the same combination of features, performance and looks as the iPhone 6S Plus. The combination of that big 3D touch display, new A9 chip set, and better cameras makes this device one of the best that we’ve seen. It’s even a great upgrade from the slightly older iPhone 6 Plus.
Connectivity? Sure, there’s the normal 3G, 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth, but thanks to advanced LTE you should see a little more speed for your mobile data. Internally you’re getting a mere 16 GB of memory, which isn’t much, and there is no SD card slot, so no adding any external memory. You’ll need to watch that that space doesn’t fill up (which is easy to do if you’re shooting 4K video).
Complaint time. So, we’re not overly impressed with 16 GB of memory. Then again, you could just use cloud storage, which many people are doing anyway. The 6S is a bit pricey, too, but you’re getting an amazing device, so that investment is kind of worth it. Those two small things aside though, we love the iPhone 6S Plus, and think you will too. It’s an incredible phone, and one that most people will want.
