With a great phone line and a fantastic tablet line, it makes sense that Apple would get into the phablet market too. There first jaunt, the iPhone 6 Plus was, well, okay. But with their second incarnation, the new iPhone 6S Plus, we might finally be seeing what Apple can really do. This is a device that’s more than ready to compete against the likes of a Samsung Galaxy Note, and it just proves that Apple are ready to take on the best. Why do you need a new 6S Plus? Firstly, because of the amazing new 3D touch display tech, which really is as good as you’ve heard. But there’s also faster than ever performance, great cameras, and some hefty internal storage as well. There are hundreds of mobiles to choose from, but the iPhone 6S Plus may very well be the best phablet device available today.
This looks like an iPhone. It’s got the minimalist feel, the sleek lines, the sexy rounded corners, and the 6S Plus is a very attractive device. It might be a tad thicker than you’d think, due to the new screen tech, but that just means it’s all the more robust. A full glass and metal unibody means that the 6S Plus is light, and for its size fits comfortably in the hand with a true premium feel. Aside from the stunning good looks, you’re getting great internals as well. There’s a new A9 chip set, giving super fast speeds, as well as the much talked about new 3D touch display. Throw in some decent camera upgrades and a whole bunch of storage and you’re looking at something very special. The iPhone 6S Plus isn’t just any phone, it’s a phablet, and a great one at that. It’s got everything you could possibly want, and probably a whole lot more as well. If you’re in the market for a top of the line device, then the 6S Plus could be the one for you.
Let’s go with performance first, and you’re getting some nice speeds here. It appears that there’s something like a 2 GHz dual core processor on board, but Apple aren’t saying anything. What’s more important that that though is the A9 chip set, which is up to 70% faster than the old A8, a difference that’s very noticeable. There’s 2 GB of RAM as well, so you’re getting responsiveness as well as speed here. As an iPhone the 6S Plus is obviously running iOS. iOS9 is the latest OS version, and it looks and feels very familiar to the regular Apple user. There are a few new things thrown in though, including a new font and a low power mode too, for saving battery juice. There’s also a nice “back to previous app” icon added, for even easier navigation. Performance wise there are no complaints here. The 6S Plus is one of the fastest devices around, and there’s no sign of lag, even when running multiple programmes simultaneously.
A lot of people are going to be interested in this new 3D touch display, but what is it? It’s a little complicated to explain, but in essence the screen is more sensitive. This allows it to understand a difference between a touch and a push on an icon and to react in two different ways. You get double the options for your touch screen, in sort of the same way as you do with a computer mouse that has both right and left click options. When it comes to size, this is a 5.5 inch display, so tough to use one handed, but there’s tons of room for typing and viewing. The 6S Plus has 1080 x 1920 resolution, so around 401 PPI, but those numbers are a little misleading. Why? Because this is a Retina display with IPS and LED backlighting. That means that in practice it’s almost flawless. Images are crisp, colours are true, and viewing angles are excellent. For our money this is one of the best displays we’ve ever seen, just for the quality of the picture alone. But with that 3D touch tech added, this goes from being a great screen to being an unbelievable one.
Finally, we’re getting camera upgrades from Apple, something we haven’t seen for a few years. Up front there’s a video calling cam that’s a 5 MP device, complete with something called screen flash. This just lets the display of the phone act as a flash for the camera. Move around back and shockingly, the standard 8 MP Apple camera is gone. There’s now a 12 MP camera in its place, and some nice little features to go along with it. These include optical image stabilisation, 4K video recording, dual LED flash, phase detection autofocus, and some respectable 4609 x 2592 resolution. Photos from the 6S Plus are excellent. Bright, colourful and true, pictures just look amazing. If you’re into mobile photography then you should be more than satisfied here.
Almost finished, but there are a few things that also deserve mentioning. Siri, Apple’s famous digital personal assistant has also been upgraded. She’d more useful than ever and is able to understand and act on more complex questions and commands now. We also like a new camera mode that’s been added. Live Photo allows you to capture video and still photos at the same time. There’s a 3 second video limit and the picture is taken after 1.5 of these seconds. The result? A normal photo along with what amounts to a kind of moving photo as well. There is a fingerprint scanner on the 6S Plus as well, which is fairly standard for Apple devices, but you’ll have that much more security. Oh, and don’t forget Apple Pay, which is Apple’s new digital payment and wallet service.

Phablets have been around for a while now, but we haven’t yet seen anything as fantastic as the new iPhone 6S Plus. It’s got everything we’ve ever wanted, from fast performance, to better cameras, a 3D touch display, a heap of extra features, and some elegant good looks as well. What more could you want from a phone?
If you’re looking at connectivity, there are the usual options here: 3G, 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth. Advanced LTE tech should mean faster mobile data speeds though. Internally, the 6S Plus is getting 128 GB of memory, which is a whole lot. You might need it though, because there’s no SD card slot, so no adding extra storage.
So, what don’t we like? Nothing, really. We can’t quibble about the lack of SD card slot with such a huge internal memory. We can’t even really argue about the high price point, since this is a top of the line, quality phone. We love nearly everything about the iPhone 6S Plus, and it’s going to be a great buy, one that will satisfy even the power user.
