The yearly release of the new iPhone model is always an exciting time, but the S series launches aren’t quite as exciting as a brand new model. But the iPhone 6S is the exception that proves the rule. It might be an S model, but it’s a real upgrade from the iPhone 6. From its faster speeds to its new screen tech, this is Apple at the top of their game. If you’ve been skipping S models, then you’re going to want to reconsider. Why do you want one? That 3D touch screen, for a start. But that’s not all. Both cameras have been upgraded, and take fantastic pictures, and speeds are faster than ever thanks to a new chip set. If you’ve been on the hunt for a new model that’s the top of its line, then the iPhone 6S is a clear winner!
An iPhone is always unmistakeable, and the 6S is definitely an iPhone, with its sleek lines and rounded edges. The 6S is a little thicker than the iPhone 6, thanks to that new screen tech, but that just means that it’s more robust. The 6S sits nicely in the hand, and that metal and glass unibody build has a real premium feel to it. This is a truly elegant and attractive phone, which we expect coming from Apple. Looks aside, you’re getting great internals too. That new chip set means faster speeds all around, and those camera upgrades were long overdue. Of course, you’re getting the new screen that everyone’s talking about, and a couple of other neat features as well. This isn’t just another release. The iPhone 6S is a truly brilliant and innovative device, and one that even demanding users are going to love. If you want a top of the line device, then this is it!
We’re all excited about this screen, so let’s start with it. It’s a 4.7 inch display, so not the biggest around, but that does mean that the 6S is very portable, and typing on screen is still easy, so not to worry. But the 3D touch? Basically, the screen can now recognise the difference between you touching an icon and when you press down harder, and has two different responses. If you think of it like the right and left buttons on your mouse you’ll get the idea. This adds another functionality to the touch screen, and it’s pretty useful. Resolution numbers look disappointing at first sight, it’s a 750 x 1334 pixel display, giving about 326 PPI. However, that doesn’t take into account that this is a Retina display, and an LED backlit one with IPS at that. In reality, this is one of the most flawless screens around, and the picture is sharp and clear with true colour and excellent viewing angles. Whether you’re watching an HD video or mobile gaming this display is one of the best on shelves right now. The iPhone 6S is a true pleasure to look at.
Comparing performance numbers on an iPhone with any other brand is useless, since the tech is different, and besides, Apple rarely release numbers. The iPhone 6S is running the new A9 chip set, which Apple are saying makes it up to 70% faster than the iPhone 6. There’s double the RAM as well, with 2 GB on board. This makes the 6S the fastest and most responsive iPhone out there, and it’s a noticeable difference from the iPhone 6. Of course, this is an iOS device, since it’s Apple. You’re getting the all new iOS9 version on the 6S, which is as easy and intuitive as you’d expect. There are a few new tricks though, like the low power mode for battery saving, and a new on screen “back to previous app” icon, which is pretty useful. Performance wise, you really couldn’t ask more. The iPhone 6S is fast, responsive, and will take anything you throw at it without blinking, and that’s what matters.
So, two new fully upgraded cameras, that’s not a bad deal on an S series iPhone. Up at the front you’re now getting a 5 MP camera for FaceTiming and selfies. It does have a screen flash, which means the phone’s display briefly lights up to act as a flash for the front camera. At the back you’re now getting a 12 MP camera, a big step up from the traditional 8 MP cameras that iPhone’s usually have. It’s got incredible 4608 x 2592 resolution as well, along with all the expected extras including dual LED flash, 4K video recording, panorama mode and phase detection auto focus. Combine all of this and you’ve got a phone that really does take amazing pictures. Whether you’re a casual snapper or a pro you’re going to love the results from the iPhone 6S.
What else is the iPhone 6S offering? You do get the fingerprint scanner for added security, and this looks like it’s going to be standard for Apple from now on. There’s Apple Pay as well, which is Apple’s payment and digital wallet service. Siri has had a little work done too. You can now ask the digital assistant more complex and complicated things, so rather than saying “find pictures of me” you can instead say “find pictures of me taken last year.” Finally, there’s a nice new mode added to the camera set up. Live Photo will let you capture both a picture and a quick video at the same time. The video begins recording 1.5 secs before the picture is taken and ends 1.5 secs after, giving you your traditional snap shot and then a moving moment as well.

Top end flagship devices are ten a penny, but the iPhone 6S is one of the best phones we’ve seen released this year. Incredible performance in addition to upgraded cameras and an amazing screen make this a real powerhouse of a phone. And it’s beautiful too, what more could you want?
Connectivity is what you’d expect, with Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G and 4G, though with advanced LTE you’re getting faster 4G and WiFi speeds. This is a 64 GB model, and there’s no SD card slot so you won’t be getting more memory. 64 GB is a lot though, and couple that with online iCloud storage and you should be fine.
So, any complaints? Nothing major. We still wish we could have an SD card slot, but that’s not going to happen. The price tag is pretty steep too, but you get the quality that you pay for. If you’re in the market for a top of the line device that isn’t going to disappoint when it comes to performance, then the iPhone 6S is the clear choice. It’s the best iPhone yet, and we love it!
