Apple’s annual iPhone release is always eagerly anticipated, though the S series launches tend not to be as exciting as new models, but the iPhone 6S has changed all that. This is basically a new model in itself, with a new, faster chip set, upgraded cameras and that 3D touch screen. It’s not often that Apple surprise us anymore, but they’ve done just that with the 6S, and this is the best iPhone we’ve seen for a long time, and one of the best phones we’ve seen this year. What should get you excited? The 3D touch screen tech is going to change the way you use your phone, and with a new chip set you can expect the fastest speeds around. Plus, you’re going to be getting some amazing pictures with the new cameras. This is a top of the line device, and one that’s going to make any Apple fan proud.
The 6S is unmistakeably an iPhone, it’s got rounded edges, sleek lines and minimalist Apple styling. It’s also a little thicker than usual, thanks to the new screen tech, but that only means that it’s more sturdy and robust. You’re getting metal and glass unibody build, so there’s premium hand feel, and there’s no hint of flexibility, unlike with the iPhone 6. This is a real beauty of a phone, and does Apple designers credit. Aside from those good looks, you’re getting nice internals as well. A new chip set and more RAM make for faster performance, and camera upgrades mean pictures are better than ever. And, of course, there’s that 3D touch screen as well as a handful of other new features. This isn’t just another iPhone, this is a fantastic, top end device and one that’s practically flawless. If you’re in the market for the best phone on shelves, then it could well be the iPhone 6S that takes the prize.
Since the 6S’s display is what everyone’s talking about, let’s start there. Firstly, this is a 4.7 inch screen, so it’s not huge, but that means that the 6S is just that much more portable than bigger devices. The screen itself can now recognise the difference between you touching the display and pressing the display, and has different reactions depending on which you do. Think of this like the right and left buttons on a computer mouse and you’ll understand how it words. This means that your touch screen is more useful than ever. Don’t be mislead by resolution numbers. The 6S has a 750 x 1334 pixel display which gives about 326 PPI. But that doesn’t tell you everything, since this is a Retina display complete with LED backlighting and IPS. In use the display on the 6S is second to none. It’s bright, clear and sharp and has superb colour reproduction as well, not to mention great viewing angles. This is one of the best displays we’ve seen, and from HD video to mobile gaming the viewing experience on the iPhone 6S is absolutely amazing.
Apple rarely release CPU numbers, which makes sense since you can’t really compare Apple tech with that of another manufacturer. We can tell you that Apple are saying the new A9 chip set makes the 6S up to 70% faster than the iPhone 6, and that it’s a noticeable difference, especially when opening apps, for example. There’s 2 GB of RAM on board as well, making for a device that’s lightening fast and responsive too. Obviously, you’re looking at an iOS device. You’ll be running the new iOS9 out of the box, which gives you the intuitive interface that you’re familiar with. There are a couple of new things too, such as a low power mode to save battery power, and a nice “back to previous app” screen icon that’s very convenient. If you’re looking for top notch performance, then you’ve found it. This is the fastest and most powerful iPhone around, and even demanding users will find the 6S more than satisfactory.
You’re also getting two upgraded cameras, which is fairly surprising coming from Apple. The front cam is now a 5 MP device, and includes a screen flash. This just means that the display flashes light to act like the traditional flash of a camera. Behind you’re looking at a 12 MP camera, which is impressive considering that up until this point Apple have had only 8 MP cams on iPhones. There’s 4608 x 2592 resolution here, which is incredible, as well as the usual suspects: 4K video recording, dual LED flash, phase detection autofocus etc. The bottom line is that picture quality is amazing. You’ll be taking the sharpest, best pictures around with the iPhone 6S, whether you’re a pro or not!
There are a few other things worthy of mention. It looks like fingerprint scanners are now standard for Apple, and the 6S is equipped with one. There’s also the new Apple Pay as well, which is the digital wallet and payment service offered by Apple. The camera app has a nice new mode, known as Live Photo, which lets you simultaneously take a picture and record video. The video begins 1.5 seconds before the picture is taken and then ends 1.5 seconds after, giving you a nice moving snapshot as well as your picture. Lastly, Siri has had some work done as well, and can now handle more complex requests and actions.

Flagship phones are expensive, there’s no denying it, but the iPhone 6S will be worth every penny if you’re looking for something that’s fast, powerful and that has incredible screen specs as well. Not only that, but it’s stylish too, giving you the best of everything!
Connectivity is the usual: WiFi and Bluetooth, 3G and 4G, though Apple say that 4G and WiFi are faster thanks to advanced LTE tech. This is a 64 GB version, which is pretty big, though there’s no SD card slot, so no external extra memory can be added. But you can always use iCloud, the online storage option from Apple if you need it.
Do we have any complaints? Not really. This is an expensive device, but you’re getting what you pay for. We’d like to be able to add more memory, but there’s a larger storage version available at extra cost should we need it. On the whole, the iPhone 6S is as close to perfect as we’ve seen for a while. If you want a great phone, and one that looks cool too, then put the 6S at the top of your list!
