With new iPhones coming out every year it can be tough to be excited about yet another one, especially when that iPhone is an S model, which are notoriously small upgrades at best. But the iPhone 6S is an amazing device, it’s got a full set of upgrades, and a bunch of new tech as well. For once Apple have given us a great S series device, and one that even the most demanding user is going to love. If Apple were losing popularity before, then they’re certainly not going to be from now on. Why should you want to get your hands on one? The new 3D touch screen tech is going to be a big selling point for most people, but you’re getting a whole lot more as well. Cameras are better than ever, thanks to a great cam upgrade, and you’re getting tons of power too. Whether you’re an Apple fan already or not, this phone is quite simply an amazing mobile, and one that’s going to wow you!
Probably the first thing that you’ll notice about the 6S is that it is a little thicker than its predecessors, mostly because of that new screen tech. It’s not unwieldy though, and other than a couple of extra millimetres it looks like any other iPhone: minimalist, sleek, sharp and sexy. You’re still getting that nice glass and metal build that make this feel like such a quality product, and the 6S is Apple styling at its best. Under the hood you’re getting some very nice upgrades indeed. That new A9 chip set means a faster than ever phone, and a bigger and better rear camera makes for a great all round device. Performance is excellent, and added features just sweeten the deal. Yes, it’s an S series iPhone, but this is a serious mobile in its own right, a great sequel not just to the 5S, but also to the regular 6. If you’re looking for a mobile that’s fast, powerful, sexy, cool and all those other great adjectives, then this is going to be it. The 6S is sure to be a bestseller.
Apple are notoriously secretive about numbers, and to be fair it’s not really possible to compare CPU numbers for an Android and an Apple. Apple compete pretty much with themselves, and the good news is that the new A9 chip set means that the 6S is noticeably faster than the regular 6, especially when booting up or opening apps. The addition of an extra gig of RAM (the 6 only had 1 GB, the 6S gets 2 GB) means that multi tasking is a breeze, and in combo the chip set and RAM make the 6S the fastest and most responsive iPhone we’ve ever seen. Operating system wise this is Apple, you’re running iOS. You are getting the shiny new iOS9, however, which gives you the intuitive operation that you’re used to along with a few new tricks as well. We’re especial fans of the added “back to previous app” screen button as well as a swanky new low power mode. You can’t judge an iPhone by the numbers, since Apple’s chip sets and processors are so much different than those used by other manufacturers. You can, however, judge an iPhone by performance, and the 6S is incredibly fast. You’re not going to have any problems here, trust us.
Okay, we’re all a bit excited about this display, so let’s get to it. The 6S has a 4.7 inch screen, smaller than many flagships, but it does make the 6S more portable, and on screen typing is still pretty easy. But… this is what Apple are calling a 3D touch screen, which basically means it takes two kinds of input. You can touch an icon, or you can press your finger down a little harder and get other options. Think of it as like the left and right buttons on a computer mouse and you get the idea. Yes, this feels odd at first, but the learning process is fast and the added level of function given to the screen ends up being very useful. When it comes to resolution, again, numbers don’t really tell the whole story with Apple. This is a 750 x 1334 pixel display, giving you around 326 PPI. Those numbers are nothing compared to, say, a Samsung Galaxy. However, the tech just isn’t the same. Apple’s Retina displays are flawless. This is an LED backlit LCD screen complete with IPS. You’re getting sharp, clear pictures with amazing colour reproduction from any angle. A smaller screen isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since the 6S just slides more easily into your pocket. And resolution numbers are misleading. The display on the 6S is beautiful, and it’s really the best that we’ve seen around.
What about those camera upgrades then? So, both cameras have been upgraded. At the front you have a 5 MP cam, which has screen flash. This just means that as you take a pic the screen of your phone gets brighter to act as a flash for the camera. Not bad. And at the back? Now you’re getting a 12 MP camera (as opposed to the standard 8 MP that we’ve come to expect from Apple). You’re also getting 4608 x 2592 resolution, which is pretty impressive. There’s dual LED flash, phase detection autofocus, 4K video recording, panorama mode and all the other extras you’d expect as well. Bottom line? The iPhone 6S takes amazing pictures. It’s really that simple. Whether you’re a pro or an amateur, you’re going to have the best snaps around.
What else is noteworthy here? Siri, who was already a great personal assistant, has had some upgrades too. She know accepts complex commands and actions, meaning that you can ask not just “find pictures of me” but “find pictures of me from last summer” and she’ll comply. There’s a new Live Photo option on that upgraded camera as well, which is pretty cool. Switch this on and you get your regular photo, but you also get a movie moment as well. The camera begins recording 1.5 seconds before you take the pic and stops 1.5 seconds after, giving you a moving snapshot as well as your normal picture. There’s also the fingerprint scanner, which we’ve come to expect, and access to Apple Pay, Apple’s digital wallet payment service.

Without a doubt, this is the best iPhone we’ve seen from Apple ever, and despite being an S series phone its a solid upgrade. That new screen tech, a host of camera upgrades, and a faster chip set all combine to mean that the 6S is a powerhouse of a mobile. This isn’t just a fashion accessory, it’s an awesome communication and productivity machine.
Connectivity is the norm: there’s WiFi and Bluetooth, 3G and 4G as well. There’s also no SD card slot, which we no longer expect from Apple anyway, but it does mean that you’re stuck with the amount of internal memory that you buy. The 16 GB version should be fine for most, however, especially if you’re using the iCloud online storage option that Apple gives you.
So, what don’t we like? That’s tough. We actually don’t have any major complaints here at all. Yes, we’d like expandable storage, but Apple is never going to give us that. When it comes down to it though, the 6S is incredible. We just can’t fault it. If you want the best mobile that you can get your hands on, then the iPhone 6S will be right up your street!
