The annual release of the new iPhone is always eagerly anticipated, and this year we’re getting the 6S series. But is it all it’s cracked up to be? Apple do have a tendency to make minimal upgrades on an S model, after all. The good news is that the 6S is an exception to this, and pretty much everything in sight has been upgraded. This is a fantastic new device, and one that everyone is going to want to get their hands on. Why should you be wanting one so desperately? There are a ton of reasons. A new chip set makes this the fastest iPhone yet, new cameras take amazing pics, new 3D touch screen tech adds another level of functionality to your display. The list is endless. Sure, you’ll be paying top drawer prices, but the iPhone 6S is more than worth the investment.
You’ll notice first off that the 6S is a little thicker than you might be used to, due to that new screen tech. Other than that though, this is a familiar device. It’s minimalistic, has sleek lines, smooth, rounded corners, and basically looks as classy as any iPhone. The 6S is a unibody metal and glass build, which means it’s premium quality and feels amazing in the hand. Inside that casing you’re getting some very nice internals indeed. A whole new chip set means that the 6S is faster than ever, and improved cameras mean that your pictures are going to look incredible. And then there’s that new display technology, which is cool but also effectively used. This is Apple’s flagship regular model for the year, and it’s a fantastic device. You’ll be getting tons of power, storage and features, meaning that this is an investment that’s going to please even more demanding mobile shoppers.
Let’s start with probably the biggest selling point of the 6S, and that’s the display. The 4.7 inch screen isn’t the largest around, but the smaller size makes for a more portable phone, and on screen typing is still comfortable. But what about that 3D tech? The display on the 6S is capable of knowing the difference between a touch and a push and responding differently to each. This works somewhat in the same way as a right and left mouse button, and means that you have a whole host of new possibilities for using that touch screen. Cool, but also very innovative as well. Resolution wise you’re looking at a 750 x 1334 pixel display, making for around 326 PPI. That doesn’t sound great until you realise that this is a Retina display so those numbers are quite misleading. With LED backlighting and IPS this display is frankly one of the best around, and it’s crisp, sharp, clear and has great colour reproduction. To cut a long story short, this display is well worth having. Even without the 3D touch tech this is a beautiful screen, and one that’s a pleasure to look at. Add in the 3D tech and it becomes a true innovation, and one that even non-geeks are going to approve of.
At the heart of the 6S is the new Apple A9 chip set. We can’t give you numbers (because Apple doesn’t release them, and besides, comparing an Apple processor to another manufacturer just doesn’t make sense), but we can tell you that Apple say the 6S is up to 70% faster than the iPhone 6. There’s also 2 GB of RAM, meaning the 6S is extremely responsive and great at multi tasking. As an Apple device the 6S obviously runs iOS. In this case it’s the new iOS9 version, which is nicely familiar and intuitive. There are a few new features, like a new font, for example. Our favourites of these are the “back to previous app” icon which makes switching between apps easy, and a low power mode, which helps save battery juice. All in all performance here is excellent. You’re getting a phone that’s super fast, that boots up and opens apps quickly, that’s responsive, and that’s easy to use as well, and what more could you want than that?
It’s come as somewhat of a shock to see that Apple have finally had a real camera upgrade, the first for several years. The front camera on the 6S is now a 5 MP device, which is perfect for FaceTime and selfies, and it also has screen flash. This allows the screen of the phone to light up to act as a flash for the camera. At the rear, the old 8 MP cam is gone, replaced by a shiny new 12 MP device, which is impressive coming from Apple. There’s a bunch of nice features too here, including phase detection autofocus, dual LED flash, 4K video recording, and monster 4608 x 2592 resolution specs. Despite not always having the best specs, iPhone cameras have always been pretty good. With these upgrades though you’re going from pretty good to great, and you’ll be taking some amazing pictures here.
There are a few other things that it would be slack of us not to mention. The fingerprint scanner first seen on the iPhone 5 is present here too, giving you extra security. But the scanner also means that you can use Apple Pay, the digital wallet and payment system. Siri has had a few nice tweaks, and is now even smarter than before. She can respond to more complex commands now, making her a little more useful than she was on the iPhone 6, though she still retains her weird sense of humour. Finally, there’s a new camera mode as well. Known as Live Photo this allows you to simultaneously take a picture and record a short video. With the video beginning 1.5 seconds before the picture is taken and ending 1.5 seconds after you end up with the regular still photo and a 3 second “moving” photo as well.

The bottom line here is that the iPhone 6S is an expensive, flagship phone, and one that meets all your expectations for such a device. It’s super fast, has great internal specs, has awesome cameras, and has an innovative new screen design as well. This is one of the best phones we’ve seen so far this year, and one that’s going to please a lot of people.
Connectivity is the expected: 3G, 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth. With advanced LTE though you should be seeing some faster 4G and WiFi speeds. Internal storage is massive, with a full 128 GB to play around with. There’s no SD card slot, of course, but then, who needs one with so much built in memory?
So, what don’t we like? Tough question. There really isn’t much. Yes, it’s pricey, no, you can’t add external storage, two things that generally we’re not fans of. But in this case we’re willing to make an exception. The iPhone 6S is pretty close to perfect, and a lot of people are going to be very happy to own one.
