Apple revolutionised the mobile phone scene with the release of the first iPhone, and the iPhone 6 Plus is a new revolution for the company. Apple’s first phablet device is pretty snazzy, and it’s obviously good looking too. This is the best we’ve seen yet from Apple and proves that the company does still have something to offer when faced with the might of Android.
What’s to love? Huge, five and a half inch screen, plenty of upgrades, HDR default camera and all kinds of other lovely treats. For iPhone lovers, this is going to be a no-brainer, and even for those that aren’t iOS fans, the iPhone 6 Plus is going to be a pretty persuasive mobile. Apple has given us all that we wanted, and it’s awesome.
Apple design is famous, but the iPhone 6 Plus looks a lot more like an iPad than it does an iPhone, mostly down to those tapered edges. This is a metal build mobile, so it’s beautiful and light, and it screams Apple. That’s a good thing. Build quality is fantastic, hand feel is great; the iPhone 6 Plus is quality through and through.
Appearances aside we’re looking at a fully upgraded new device, with nearly every spec beating the specs on the old iPhone 5S. If you’re looking for the most powerful iPhone yet, then this is it. Everything has been overhauled, right down to the operating system.
Combine stylish design with overhauled internals, and you’ve got a fantastic device and one that’s sure to be popular on this year’s market. Apple hasn’t given us something this surprising since the iPhone 4, and it’s about time. The iPhone 6 Plus is stunning, and a worthwhile buy for those looking for a phablet.
We’ve got to start with the screen, the most noticeable difference between the 6 Plus and any other iPhone. It measures in at a cool five and a half inches, making this a great compromise between an iPhone and an iPad. The home screen does switch to horizontal view in the same way as the iPad’s does (though other iPhones don’t).
This isn’t all about size, though, and the screen specs on the iPhone 6 are pretty impressive even without the big measurements. It’s got 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution, so it’s firmly high definition, and you’re getting sharp, well-defined pictures here. It’s also a Retina display, so both colour reproduction and viewing angles are excellent.
No matter whether you’re video watching, presentation editing or book reading, the screen on the iPhone 6 Plus is its crowning glory. The portability of an iPhone and all your common features coupled with the larger screen of an iPad, the 6 Plus gives you a little of everything.
Apple has never concentrated too much on high powered phones, preferring to offer great user experience rather than big CPU numbers, and the iPhone 6 Plus is no exception to this. It’s running a 1.4 GHz dual core processor (nowhere close to the most powerful one available), an A8 chipset and 2 GB of RAM. Those numbers aren’t that impressive, but performance is. You’ll find the 6 Plus snappy and responsive, and that’s what counts.
You’re also getting the upgraded operating system, iOS 8. As intuitive and easy to use as any other iOS version, 8 throws in a few added extras. The new native keyboard has better text prediction, able to predict words based on who you’re writing to. Siri gets full music recognition capabilities too. And there have been tweaks to the email and SMS programmes as well.
We’re not going to lie. The iPhone 6 Plus is not the fastest phone on the market. But regarding performance you’re going to be more than satisfied with what you’re getting.
Camera specs can be a sore spot with iPhone fans since Apple concentrate more on giving better sensor and feature adjustments rather than giving more megapixels. Yes, the 6 Plus gets the same old 8 MP rear-facing camera, but that doesn’t mean that you’re not getting better picture quality in general.
The reason for this is the new sensor that Apple has given the phone, which gets you faster focusing, as well as the fact that the camera is now HDR by default. There’s optical image stabilisation too, as well as that dual tone flash that we first met on the iPhone 5S. Panorama mode, burst mode, and facial recognition round out the feature list for the rear cam.
Facing front, we’re getting a 1.2 MP FaceTime camera, which is also HDR capable, and has better face recognition and focus when compared to the iPhone 5S. Don’t worry about the megapixels. You’ll be taking pro snaps on the iPhone 6 Plus.
Phones are all about connectivity, after all, and the iPhone 6 Plus gets a couple of upgrades that you should know about. The first is that it is now capable of calling over both WiFi and LTE, and it has full NFC capability too (though you won’t be able to use the Apple digital wallet system for a while yet, it’s only just been released in the US).
You’re also getting more connection speed. New protocols mean that the 6 Plus is giving you WiFi that’s up to three times faster than normal, as well as LTE or 4G speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Internet connections on the 6 Plus are faster than ever.
Finally, it is worth mentioning that the iPhone 6 Plus does have better battery life than the iPhone 5S, despite having a larger screen. If you hate having to charge your phone all the time, then rest assured that the battery on the 6 Plus is capable of giving you up to eighty hours of standby time, which is pretty impressive.

The iPhone 6 Plus is a whole new world for Apple products. It’s the love child of an iPhone and an iPad, and it’s got the best features of both. Decent specs and a big screen mean that the 6 Plus is going to be a big seller, and that’s good news for Apple.
Aside from the new and groovy, you’ll get all the usual suspects too. That means Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, 4G and all the normal Apple apps, including their great scheduling software and an iCloud storage account.
Complaints? Well, the 6 Plus isn’t perfect. We’d like the option to add more storage, especially on the 16 GB version, but that’s never gonna happen with Apple. And we’d like a few more megapixels on the camera. But as far as phablet phones go, the iPhone 6 Plus is pretty stunning, and it’s definitely a crowd pleaser.
