About the iPhone 6 Plus 64GB Gold

This year we’ve been treated to two new iPhone models, and the iPhone 6 Plus is by far the best. With the phablet market taking off in the last couple of years, Apple have finally entered the arena, and the result is the biggest, fastest and best iPhone we’ve ever seen. Big screen, tons of upgrades, snazzy features, the 6 Plus looks like it’s got it all.

What should you be excited about? A 5.5 inch Retina display makes viewing a pleasure, some fancy tweaks to the camera mean that the 6 Plus takes amazing pics, and there’s more connection speed too. The iPhone 6 Plus has an awful lot going for it, and it’s a very tempting purchase indeed…

Is it an iPhone? Is it an iPad? The 6 Plus is a bit of both. Gone are the old square edges of the iPhone 5S, the 6 Plus is all about smooth, tapering edges and rounded corners, which make it look a little like the iPad Air, but also make it sit comfortably in the hand despite the big screen. It’s full metal build, as we expect from Apple, so it’s thin and light. And the power button has been relocated, now residing on the right side rather than on the top, so it’s easier to reach.

Design aside, the internals on the 6 Plus have been fully upgraded, making this faster, better and sturdier than the iPhone 5S. You’ll get the newest version of iOS as well, so the 6 Plus really does give you the best that Apple has to offer.

That combination of visually stunning design and solid performance are what Apple are really famous for, and the iPhone 6 Plus is a testament to Apple’s ability to build something that’s not only pretty but that works. For phablet fans, the 6 Plus is going to be top of the wish list for this Christmas, it’s simply a superb mobile.

The Heart of the 6 Plus: CPU and OS

Internally, the 6 Plus isn’t as impressive as some of the top end mobiles that we’re seeing, if we’re being honest. It’s running a dual core 1.4 GHz processor with 2 GB of RAM and the Apple A8 chip set. But it comes down to performance, not numbers, as Apple well know, and the 6 Plus is as snappy and responsive as they come. There’s no lag, even when running CPU intensive games, the 6 Plus gives you a fantastic user experience and that’s what it’s all about.

This is an iPhone, so obviously it’s running iOS, but you’re getting the new 8 version. What’s new in iOS8? A while bunch of things. Most notable is the new native on screen keyboard with better text prediction and Siri’s better music recognition ability. But there are a whole bunch of little improvements, including new actions in the email and SMS apps.

Apple don’t try to wow people with spec numbers, and as far as the iPhone 6 Plus goes, that’s no big deal. You’re getting solid, decent performance with a smooth, easy to use operating system. This means that using your phone is a joy, there’s no frustration here.

Awesome Screen Specs

Moving on to the iPhone 6 Plus’s big selling point: that screen. Alright, it’s a 5.5 inch display, which is huge. However, you can shrink the display down into the bottom corner with a double tap on the sensor so that you can use the phone one handed, and you can also flip the home screen to horizontal if you like (something the iPad can do, but older iPhones can’t). That huge display means typing is easy and viewing or reading is beautiful.

Not only that, but screen specs have been upped too. This is an Apple Retina display, so you get awesome colour definition as well as great viewing angles. But it’s also a 1080 x 1920 full high definition display, so pictures are crisp and sharp.

Big screen phones need big screen specs, and the iPhone 6 Plus isn’t going to let you down. Visually, this is an amazing display, and the old iPhone 5S pales in comparison next to it.

Taking Pictures

A lot of phones these days are getting cameras with big MP. The iPhone 6 Plus doesn’t. A far cry from the 13 MP, 21 MP or even 40 MP cams we’re seeing on most top end phones, the 6 Plus has a basic 8 MP camera. Is that a bad thing? Maybe, depending on what you want to do. You won’t be able to capture quite as much detail with an 8 MP camera, but you can still take great pictures, because picture quality doesn’t necessarily depend on the number of MP you’re getting.

The 6 Plus has better digital noise reduction as well as a new sensor that gives faster focus, so you’re getting better pictures. It’s also HDR by default, again giving you better pics. Combine that with the dual tone LED flash, optical image stabilisation as well as burst and panorama modes and you’re actually getting a decent camera, number of MP aside.

The FaceTime cam up front is only 1.2 MP, but it’s also HDR capable and has better face recognition and focus than that of the iPhone 5S. The results are in the pictures, no, the 6 Plus doesn’t have a huge camera but it does have some fancy tweaks that make pictures look amazing, and that’s what really counts.

Better Connection Speeds

There are also a few new connection possibilities that you should know about on the iPhone 6 Plus. Apple have allowed WiFi and 4G calling on this model. They’ve also tweaked protocols so that WiFi is up to three times faster, and LTE gets up to 150 Mbps.

The 6 Plus also has full NFC capability. This is because Apple are working on a digital payment system, that will allow you to pay with your phone. This system isn’t going to be available in the UK just yet, but it’s on the horizon.

iPhone 6 Plus 64GB Gold Review

Apple’s iPhones have begun to lose market share. The slow processors and small screens of the iPhone just can’t compete with the big Android names. But it’s going to be the iPhone 6 Plus that changes all that. With its big screen and solid performance this is a phone that can really compete with the rest of the market.

You get the usuals too: fingerprint scanner, 3G, 4G, Bluetooth. You’ll get the normal Apple stuff: great scheduling software, iTunes connection, iCloud storage. The 6 Plus has a lot to offer, especially when compared to other iPhone models.

Any complaints? Pretty much the same complaints as we have for any Apple product. We’d like expandable memory with an SD card slot and more MP on the camera. Apple are unlikely to give us what we want though. But with the iPhone 6 Plus being such a superstar of a phone, we’re going to forgive Apple for the small things. The 6 Plus is just such a tempting buy.
