Apple’s iPhones are best sellers the world over, but up until now we’ve always had a problem with their tiny screens. Enter the new iPhone 6 Plus, the Apple phablet that we’ve all been dying to meet. Not only does it have sexy new design specs, but it’s got a slew of upgrades too. It’s got looks, it’s got power, it’s got everything you could ask for.
Why should you buy? Because of that huge 5.5 inch screen, because camera specs are better than ever, because it’s even more eye catching than ever. There are plenty of reasons to shop for an iPhone 6 Plus, and this is going to be the cream of the crop for Apple for the next year or so. Sick of tiny screens? The 6 Plus is here to save the day.
Let’s start with those good looks. The iPhone 6 Plus is basically the love child of an iPhone and an iPad, and that’s a good thing. The bigger screen is offset by tapered edges, so the 6 Plus sits well in the hand. A full metal body keeps it light and portable. Even the power button has been moved to the right hand side to make it more accessible. The 6 Plus is unmistakeably Apple, but it’s sleeker, slimmer and sexier than any other iPhone before it.
Go underneath that beautiful skin and you’re getting a ton more power and features. Apple have completely overhauled the old iPhone 5S, and you’re even getting a new operating system version as well. The 6 Plus is a clear upgrade from the 5S, something that isn’t always the case with Apple.
Good looks and great performance combine to make the iPhone 6 Plus the best that Apple has to offer, and that larger screen is going to be a real crowd pleaser. Phablet devices are all the rage right now, and the 6 Plus is going to slide right in at the top of the market.
Before we get to the main event (which has to be screen specs), let’s go below the surface. The iPhone 6 Plus is driven by a dual core 1.4 GHz processor, not amazingly fast, but then Apple have never concentrated their efforts on big power. There’s 2 GB of RAM and that Apple A8 chip set. The 6 Plus is very responsive, and it’s more powerful than any other iPhone. No, it’s not the fastest phone around, but it does have very satisfying performance, which makes you question why you’re thinking about investing in a bigger processor phone.
On the operating system side, this is running the all new iOS 8. What’s new? A lot, actually. All the major programmes have been updated, giving new email functions, for example. There’s also the addition of music recognition for Siri, as well as a new keyboard with better predictive text. This is the iOS that you love, but it’s smoother, faster and just, well, better.
Performance wise you’re not going to have any complaints about the iPhone 6 Plus. It gets satisfying speeds, the iOS is clean and sharp, there’s really nothing here that brings the model down. No, it’s not super fast, but a normal user really isn’t going to notice that.
Let’s be honest here: typing on the tiny screen on the old iPhone 5S could be a nightmare, especially when compared to those HTC One or Samsung Galaxy models. The iPhone 6 Plus, on the other hand, earns the Plus title due to it’s huge five and a half inch display.
Sound big? It is. However, the entire home screen now flips to horizontal display if you want it to, and you can also switch to one handed mode by tapping the sensor twice which shrinks the display down into the bottom corner of the phone. This means that you’re getting the best of both worlds. A big screen for videos and reading, combined with something smaller when you’ve only got one hand to spare.
Resolution is good, it’s a 1080 x 1920 screen, so fully HD, giving you about 401 PPI, so well defined. And, of course, it’s an Apple Retina display, so you’re also getting great colours as well as wide viewing angles.
The screen on the 6 Plus is really its crowning glory, and it’s a belter: bright, sharp, clear. Watching, reading, typing anything you please, the 6 Plus’s screen is stunning.
Hmmm. The camera. Okay, first the bad news: it’s still the standard 8 MP camera that we’ve been seeing from Apple for quite some time. This will be disappointing for some, but the truth is that the 6 Plus still gets some pretty awesome pictures.
There’s a new sensor, so you get faster focus times, as well as better digital noise reduction, so better quality pics. You’re also getting that dual tone LED flash that we saw on the iPhone 5S, as well as optical image stabilisation. Then, of course, the regulars: panorama, burst mode, facial recognition.
On the front it’s still a 1.2 MP cam, but again there’s better focus and facial recognition. The exciting part? The front cam is HDR capable, but the rear facing cam is HDR by default. The bottom line is that you’re going to be getting some pretty stellar pictures from the 6 Plus.
There are so many new features on the 6 Plus that’s it’s tough not to try to squeeze a few more in. What about connections? The 6 Plus now allows both calling over WiFi and over 4G. WiFi is up to three times faster than standard, and LTE is getting up to 150 Mbps, thanks to new protocols.
Battery life? The 6 Plus is being reported as getting up to eighty hours standby, a huge leap up from the iPhone 5S.
And more? Of course, this is Apple. You’re still getting that fingerprint scanner for security, and you’re also getting a barometer as well. Oh, and full NFC capability, which will help with your digital wallet, though Apple haven’t released their payment system in the UK yet.

In a world of millions of phones, it’s the Apple products that stand out. The combination of performance, ease of use and attractiveness makes iPhones that little bit more desirable than any other model. And the iPhone 6 Plus is the best of the bunch right now.
You’re not only getting a bigger screen and better internals. You’re getting all the normal stuff too. 4G, 4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, all of Apple’s signature scheduling apps, iTunes and iCloud storage too. There’s a lot about the 6 Plus to love.
What don’t we love? We’d like expandable memory, but Apple will never bow to that, so we’re stuck with paying more for a bigger memory phone. We’d like more MP on the rear cam, but the 6 Plus takes pretty good pics anyway. All in all, this is a great phone, and one that we’d be proud to own.
