Do you really need to upgrade your phone? With new models released every year it can be difficult to justify buying the latest of iPhone models. But the iPhone 6 is such a huge upgrade from the 5S that it really is worth buying. Apple have given us everything that we’ve asked for and more, and the latest iPhone is one of the greatest that we’ve ever seen.
Why should you be excited? What about because of the bigger and better screen? Or maybe more power? Or the fact that the 6 is running iOS 8 out of the box? There’s really nothing not to be excited about here. The iPhone 6 is going to be one of the best selling models of the year, and there are some solid reasons why it should be.
Design on the iPhone 6 is a little different. For a start the power button, traditionally placed on the top of an iPhone, has been moved to the right hand side, making it easier to press one handed. But the 6 is also thinner and more rounded than previous models. It feels a lot more like the HTC One, or a Galaxy. It’s full metal build, so it both looks and feels high quality, and it’s one of the lightest handsets around as well.
Appearance aside, there’s a full set of upgrades internally. With more speed, better battery life and some decent display increases, the iPhone 6 proves itself to be a truly worthy successor to the iPhone 5S, and one worth investing in.
Apple have made a serious effort to make the iPhone 6 both familiar and revolutionary, and they’ve done a fair job of it. The 6 is similar enough to older models that it’s unmistakably an iPhone, but has enough new features that it can justify its price tag. On the whole, Apple have done themselves proud.
One of the biggest changes on the iPhone 6 has to be display size. Apple have gone up to a 4.7 inch screen. This is really the largest decent size for a screen that gives you both ease of operation for one handed use and a great viewing experience as well, and there’s a hugely noticeable difference between the display on the 5S and on the 6.
The iPhone 6 has been equipped with Apple’s Retina display, so it’s high definition and colour reproduction is excellent. Retina gives better viewing angles as well, which is always as plus. You’re getting 730 x 1334 pixel resolution, which ends up giving you around 326 PPI, so the display is sharp and well defined.
Viewing on the iPhone 6 is stellar. And whilst the larger screen size is going to be the big crown pleaser, the Retina display with its increased resolution is really stunning. You’ll be had pressed to find an iPhone with better picture quality than this.
Going behind that new, big screen, you’re going to get some decent performance out of the iPhone 6. It’s got a dual core 1.4 GHz processor with 1 GB of RAM and the Apple A8 chip set. In layman’s terms that means it’s responsive to input and snappy at performing its everyday tasks. You won’t need to worry about lagging or freezing here.
On the OS front, the iPhone 6 is obviously iOS, and it’s running the new version 8 out of the box. That gives you added music recognition software for Siri, an all new native keyboard that’s better at prediction, as well as several additions to classic SMS and email programmes. IOS 8 is faster and more intuitive than the older 7 version by a long shot.
If you’re looking for something that’s not going to overwhelm you with power but is going to give you solid, steady performance, then the iPhone 6 has got you covered. The user interface is simple and the general user experience is excellent.
Controversially, Apple are still refusing to up camera resolution, which means the iPhone 6 is still carrying that 8 MP cam that’s become so familiar. That doesn’t mean that picture taking hasn’t been improved, however.
There is a new photo sensor on board, which gives you faster focus ability, and you’re getting dual tone LED flash for more natural colour reproduction. The rear facing camera also has better filters for weeding out digital “noise” that distorts pictures.
On the front cam, you’re getting better focus and facial recognition, and on both cameras there’s HDR capability (on the rear facing camera it’s default). As far as the user interface goes, you’re getting more or less what you expect. There’s panorama and burst modes, digital image stabilisation and full facial recognition software.
Taking pictures on the iPhone 6 is a pleasure. The phone just makes it so easy to take a great snap, something that amateur photographers are sure to appreciate.
Apple have thrown so many new features into the iPhone 6 that’s it’s tough to list them all, but there are a few highlights. Better battery life is one, the 6 is now getting up to eleven hours on WiFi and up to ten hours on 4G and 3G, a big improvement over the iPhone 5S.
There’s better connectivity too. Apple have added both WiFi calling and VoLTE (voice over LTE), so you’ve got more options. Plus, WiFi is now up to three times faster than standard, and LTE promises speeds of up to 150 Mbps for downloads.
Other improvements include a barometric sensor on the upgraded M8 co-processor, and full NFC support. This NFC support is going to be handy, since Apple are already releasing a digital payment system in the US, which should be hitting European shores soon too.

Apple have disappointed us in the last couple of years, and there hasn’t really been a great iPhone release since the iPhone 4. The iPhone 6 is set to change that. With so many improvements and such big upgrades to specs, the 6 is a brilliant buy.
And don’t forget, that as well as all your cool new features, you’re also getting everything else that you’d expect, full 4G support, Bluetooth, excellent calendar and scheduling functions, and everything else that Apple generally give you.
What don’t we like? No phone is perfect, but the iPhone 6 comes close. There’s no support for additional memory, though this is standard for Apple. Even though the camera does take great pictures, we’d still like to see a bit more resolution. Other than that though, the iPhone 6 is a great buy for anyone looking for an upgrade.
