Apple iPhones need no introduction. One of the best selling and most popular handsets on the market for over a decade now, the iPhone is a true mobile classic. But with increasing competition from heavy Android hitters like Samsung and HTC, do Apple still have what it takes to create a phone that can wow us? Take a look at the iPhone 6 and you’ll see just what a foolish question that is. This model is stunning.
What is there to love? Pretty much everything. From it’s new higher resolution and bigger screen to increased power specs, smoother design and faster camera, the iPhone 6 has it all. This is a complete upgrade of the iPhone 5S, and it just has so much to give. There’s a reason that the new iPhone release is one of the most eagerly anticipated events on the mobile market.
The iPhone 6 represents one of the biggest changes in Apple design since the iPhone 4. This is pure quality, and you can feel that as soon as you pick it up. The iPhone 6 is slimmer and has rounded edges, as opposed to the harsh lines seen on the iPhone 5S, but it’s that full metal build that really gives the 6 its fantastic hand feel. It’s slim and sexy, sure, but it’s also high class and feels like a true premium product.
Not everything is about looks though, right? Not to worry, go under the casing and you’ll see that you’re getting some impressive spec upgrades too. The iPhone 6 is faster, more powerful and more feature laden than the iPhone 5S, as well it should be.
So, we’ve got better design, more power, more features, a bigger, better screen. What more could you ask for? The new Apple iPhone 6 is a true super phone, and is sure to be one of the biggest sellers on this year’s list of popular mobiles.
Before we look at anything else, let’s look at the engine driving the iPhone 6. Apple are notoriously secretive about such spec numbers, but what is clear is that the iPhone 6 is snappier and more responsive than ever. With a dual core 1.4 GHz processor and an Apple A8 chip set plus 1 GB of RAM, the iPhone 6 is a speedy little beast, and you’ll definitely see a difference in performance between this and older iPhone models.
On the OS front, the iPhone 6 is running Apples new iOS 8 version. That means more stability and security as well as some nice new features. The new native keyboard is a nice touch (it not only learns how you type but also what kind of words you type to different people and in different apps to approve auto-suggestion). And the addition of better music recognition software to the Siri programme is pretty sweet too. There’s a whole slew of other new features in iOS 8 just waiting to be discovered.
Performance wise the iPhone 6 is the best iPhone that we’ve seen yet, and as a user you’re going to be more than satisfied with speeds as well as the new OS features that you’re getting. This isn’t the fastest phone on the market, but it’s more than snappy enough for the average user.
With top end Androids getting well over five inches of screen space these days, one of the biggest disadvantages of an iPhone was really screen size. On the iPhone 6 Apple have pumped up that size to 4.7 inches, which is a great compromise between a fantastic viewing experience and a phone that can still be used comfortably with one hand.
This is an Apple Retina HD display, so it’s got incredible colour reproduction, as well as better viewing angles than ever before. There’s 730 x 1334 pixel resolution (coming out to about 326 PPI), so you’re getting a good, sharp picture as well. Retina displays are just as good as their reputation says, and looking at the iPhone 6 is a real joy.
Gone are those fiddly typing issues that we all had on the tiny screen of the iPhone 5S. Apple have really been listening to consumers, and the new bigger screen on the iPhone 6 is maybe the most welcome upgrade that the company have given us.
Apple have not upgraded the resolution on the iPhone 6’s camera, it’s still an 8 MP device. But whilst more megapixels do capture better details, it’s the camera lens and sensor that really make the difference when it comes to a great picture.
So the iPhone 6 does have a sensor upgrade, which means that you’ll get a faster focus time (always a good thing), and there’s dual tone flash as well (meaning that you’ll get more natural colour reproduction when using the flash).
As far as features go, you’ve got all the user interface tricks that you’d usually expect. There’s both burst and panorama modes, facial recognition and digital image stabilisation as well. And HDR is now the default setting on the iPhone 6.
That’s all the rear facing camera, but the front “FaceTime” camera has an update too, now getting better face detection and focus, as well as being HDR capable. Whichever camera you use, you’re going to be getting some awesome looking pics with the iPhone 6.
Again, Apple tend to be secretive about power stats for their batteries, but the iPhone 6 certainly has a lot more battery power than the iPhone 5S had, which is good news for those of us that hate charging our phone half way through the day. This model gets up to 11 hours over WiFi, and up to 10 hours over 3G or LTE, which is pretty good.
Speaking of 3G and 4G, you’re going to be getting more speeds too. Protocol changes mean that you’ll be getting WiFi speeds that are up to three times faster, as well as faster LTE/4G speeds (of up to 150 Mbps for downloads). Plus, Apple have added support for WiFi calling and voice of LTE (VoLTE) as well.
There are two other new features that really deserve a mention. The old M7 co-processor has been increased to an M8 and now includes a barometer. Secondly, the iPhone 6 now supports NFC, which is generally used to make payments using your mobile. Currently Apple’s digital wallet service is only available to US customers, but this is slated to change in the near future.
There’s a lot to love about the iPhone 6, and it’s just swimming with new, cool features and tricks. This is a real little treasure of a phone.

It’s been easy to complain about the last couple of iPhone releases, as Android models got bigger, better and more competitive. But the iPhone 6 really solves a lot of the problems that we had with early incarnations.
There’s decent power, a far better and bigger screen and lots of new features to play around with, as well as all the usual things that you’d expect from a top end iPhone. This truly is one the best releases that we’ve seen from Apple in a while.
What don’t we like? We still don’t get to add additional memory with an SD card slot, but that’s standard for Apple products. We’d like a little more screen size too, but the 4.7 inch display looks and feels larger than it is, so we can’t complain too much. All in all, the iPhone 6 is a great device, and one that any Apple fan (and quite a few non-Apple fans) is going to love.
