Over a decade ago now, Apple revolutionised the mobile phone market with the iPhone. Since then the company has dominated bestseller lists. But can they really do it again? With the iPhone 6, undoubtedly. The newest iPhone is faster, bigger and better than ever before, and it’s a beauty as well.
What should you be excited about? Well, there’s that 4.7 inch screen, for a start, the largest regular iPhone screen we’ve ever seen. What about a full 128GB of internal storage? And the iPhone 6 has had a complete series of upgrades when compared to last year’s iPhone 5S. All in all, this is a very tempting little device indeed with a lot to offer.
Apple have always been famous for their design, and the iPhone 6 just takes that one step further. Blunt, square edges have been smoothed out, and the glass screen extends almost over the edge of the body, giving a sleek, sexy profile. It’s a full metal build phone, so it’s both light and thin. There’s even a new right hand side placement for the power button, which is way more convenient for using your phone one handed.
But what about under that beautiful shell? No worries there either. Apple have given the iPhone 6 a complete overhaul, so there’s more power, more features and more, well, everything. Performance here is the best we’ve ever seen from the company.
Can Apple really compete against those heavy hitter Android phones? With the iPhone 6 they just might be able to. Whether you’re an Apple fan or a brand new user, the newest iPhone model has an awful lot to tempt you into investing in it.
What’s driving the all new iPhone 6? It’s tough to get solid specs out of Apple, who are always secretive, but benchmark tests suggest the iPhone 6 is running a 1.4 GHz dual core processor alongside 1 GB of RAM. Combine those with the new Apple A8 chip set and you’re getting a phone that’s nicely responsive and pretty snappy.
Apple have given the iPhone 6 first shot at the mobile version of iOS 8 as well, and it’s a very pleasing upgrade. From a new native keyboard with better predictive text to music recognition software for Siri and a whole bunch of other features, iOS 8 is even easier to user then iOS 7, which is saying a lot.
Performance wise no, you’re not looking at the fastest phone around. What you are looking at is a work horse of a phone that will take what you throw at it and just keep going. For everyday activities, performance specs on the iPhone 6 are more than enough to get the job done.
We’ve often complained that iPhone screens are just too small, and on screen typing on the iPhone 5S was a nightmare. Hopefully this is now a solved problem, since the iPhone 6 is equipped with a solid 4.7 inch display. That’s big enough for most tasks while still small enough to hold in one hand, which is how most of us use our phones.
Size is good, but it’s the picture that’s important. Fortunately, this is a full HD Retina screen, so awesome colour reproduction and wide viewing angles. Apple have upped the resolution too, so the iPhone 6 has 326 PPI (that’s 730 x 1334 pixel resolution), resulting in a sharp, well defined display.
Whatever you need to do on the iPhone, this display is a huge improvement over that on the iPhone 5S. More size, more resolution, what more could you ask for?
You can’t have a phone without a camera these days, and the iPhone 6 is sporting a nice little 1.2 MP front facing video conference camera that’s got HDR as well as much improved focus and facial recognition.
The main camera is still an 8 MP camera, Apple haven’t upped resolution which is a disappointment to some. What has improved is the sensor (faster focus) and the digital noise reduction, so there’s less picture interference. HDR is default and the iPhone 6 includes the dual tone LED flash for more natural colour reproduction.
On the feature front you’re getting digital image stabilisation, plus panoramic and burst modes and facial recognition. Bottom line? The iPhone 6 takes great pictures, even though camera resolution hasn’t increased.
There’s good and bad news here. You’re not getting an SD card slot, so there’s no adding a bit more external memory if you want it. However, you’re looking at a massive 128GB of built in memory (equivalent to over 30,000 songs), and that’s a whole lot of storage space.
Want to keep your whole music collection? No probs. Take tons of photos? No worries. If you hate moving data around between your phone and PC or your phone and the Cloud, then the iPhone 6 has got you covered with the largest phone storage capacity on the market.
There are plenty of extra features on the newest Apple offering. Of course you’re still getting the added security of a fingerprint scanner, but you’re getting NFC connectivity too, though Apple’s digital payment system is only going to be available to US customers for a while yet.
Battery power has been improved over the iPhone 5S, with the 6 now getting up to 11 hours over WiFi and up to 10 hours per charge over 3G/4G. Speaking of which, WiFi speeds have been improved (up to three times faster) as have LTE speeds (up to 150 Mbps).

Every year we think we’ve seen the best iPhone yet, and every year Apple continue to give us something more. The iPhone 6 is a clear winner here, it’s packed full of new stuff and it’s an obvious upgrade from the iPhone 5S model.
As well as all these spec increases and cool new design, you’ll get the normal stuff too, so there’s 4G, Bluetooth, 3G and WiFi, plus Apple’s scheduling and productivity apps thrown in.
Now, what don’t we like? There’s not much to complain about with the 6. Yes, more camera resolution would be nice, but we’re getting great pictures anyway. We’d kind of like the option of adding storage, but with 128GB to fill we can’t really quibble about that. This year’s iPhone 6 is awesome, and it’s sure to please even the most demanding Apple fan.
