About the P9 Black

Chinese company Huawei are pretty new on the UK market, and have made a name for themselves for putting high end specs in budget phones. But they’re looking to expand into the premium market, and the new Huawei P9 is their latest attempt at high end mobile devices. It’s got the hard core specs you’d expect, and yet still comes in a good £100 or so cheaper than most flagships. Does Huawei have what it takes to play with the big boys? The P9 persuades us that they really do.

Why should you buy a P9? Sure, there’s great power and performance specs, and the display is pretty good too, but it’s those dual rear cameras that are really going to sell this device, and the high end minimalistic design too. If you’re looking for a top end mobile that gives you savings too, then the Huawei P9 is the way to go.

Key Features on the Huawei P9

The P9 is a bit of a looker, with its slim profile, rounded edges and corners, and overall premium feel. It’s got a metal unibody build, meaning that it’s light and yet robust, and feels firm and secure in the hand. And the front bezelling is slim, making the front face almost entirely screen, so there’s no waste of space here.

Design aside, there are some hefty internals on the P9. You’re getting huge processing power and RAM, serious screen specs, and some stunning cameras as well. Plus, there’s the extras, including some great battery life.

This isn’t a cheap phone by any means, however, despite the flagship style specs, it’s also not an expensive one, coming at the top of the mid market range and significantly cheaper than most comparable hand sets. If you’re looking for a fantastic all around phone, then the Huawei P9 is the clear winner.

CPU and OS

Let’s start with that all important performance, and you’re getting solid octo core processing power here. The P9 runs two quad core processors side by side (a 2.5 GHz and a 1.8 GHz model), plus a huge 4 GB of RAM. This makes it one of the fastest phones around, very responsive to input, and excellent at multi tasking.

This is an Android device, and it runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, with an expected update to the new Android 7.0 Nougat as soon as it’s available. This gives you a few nice new features (like split screen), as well as the familiar customisation options and intuitive interface that you know and love.

Performance on the P9 is second to none. It’s fast, it’s responsive, there’s no lag, even when multi tasking. If you’re a demanding user then you’ll be pleased to know that the P9 just doesn’t falter, it can take anything you throw at it.

Screen Specs

Moving on to display specs, and you’re getting a 5.2 inch screen, which is really the ideal size. There’s plenty of room for on screen typing, for instance, but you can still use the P9 one handed, and it slides nicely into your pocket, more portable than larger screen devices.

Resolution numbers are fair, you’re getting 1080 x 1920 pixels, so around 423 PPI. This means that images are sharp and well defined. In addition, this is an LCD screen, so colour reproduction is bright and natural, and there’s IPS thrown in for great viewing angles.

Add all these things together and you’ve got a great display. HD video and even photo editing are spectacular on the P9, and whilst this isn’t the best display on the market right now, the picture quality is very, very good.

Those Cameras…

Cameras are going to be the main selling point of the P9 for most people, and they’re stunning. At the front there’s an 8 MP camera, which is fairly high resolution, and definitely more than satisfactory for selfies or video calling.

At the back, you’ve got dual 12 MP cameras. Whilst the tech here is complicated, in essence this allows you to zoom in and out of shots without losing resolution, resulting in clearer, sharper, better pictures. You get optics from Leica, dual tone flash, and phase detection auto focus as well, so there’s no shortage of camera features.

Dual cams are pretty new to the market, but they do give a much more DSLR feel to mobile photography, and the P9 takes some amazing shots. If you love mobile photography, then you’re going to love the Huawei P9.

And the Extras

What else does the P9 have to offer? There are a few special features, but there are a couple that we do need to single out. Firstly, there is an excellent fingerprint sensor on the P9. This gives added security and the ability to use some mobile payment systems, and isn’t terribly unusual at the top of the market, but the scanner on the P9 is very accurate, with far less failed readings than we expected.

Secondly, Huawei have given the P9 a larger than expected battery, with a Li-Ion 3000 mAh battery on board which should be more than enough to last you all day. In case you do need a top up on juice, the P9 has fast charging, and can get from 0 to 44% charge in just thirty minutes, which is a definite time saver.

P9 Black Review

The Huawei P9 has serious top end features, but for less cash than we’d expect to pay for a high end phone. There’s loads of power and great performance, a decent screen, and some simply fantastic cameras. If you’re looking for a premium phone but don’t want to pay full premium prices, then the Huawei P9 is going to be a fabulous buy.

As far as connectivity goes, there are the usual options: Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G and 4G. The P9 comes in 32 GB or 64 GB versions (though beware, the smaller 32 GB version gets only 3 GB of RAM), but it also has an SD card slot for up to 256 GB of external extra storage should you need it.

Right, so was there anything we didn’t like? We’ve got to be honest and say not really. We could do with a little more screen resolution, but in reality that image was pretty crisp. And for these prices we’re not going to quibble over silly things like that. We think that the Huawei P9 is a steal, with all that power and those fantastic cameras, there’s a lot to love about this phone. So start shopping now!
