Chinese manufacturer Huawei has made a name for themselves on the Western market by producing high specced budget handsets. However, recently they’ve moved more into the high-end market, though that affordability factor remains. The Huawei P10 is a top end phone, with a price tag that might surprise you, and just because you’re saving doesn’t mean that you’re cutting corners.
Why should you want to get your hands on this device? Try tonnes of power and speed, expandable storage (becoming more of a rarity these days), fantastic cameras, a solid screen, as well as some nice extra features too. If you’re in the market for a high-end mobile that isn’t going to send you bankrupt, then the Huawei P10 is going to be an awesome choice.
At first glance, the P10 looks an awful lot like an iPhone. There’s the same metal unibody design, the same sexy thin lines. But the rounded corners and thin bezel show that this isn’t Apple, though it is a beautiful design aesthetic. Camera bumps are minimal, there’s a front placed fingerprint scanner, and the result is a premium looking and feeling handset.
Aside from those good looks, you’re getting some solid internals. There’s a good display, plenty of power, and some nice little cameras as well. You’re even getting some nice extras, like the navigation capability of that fingerprint scanner, and quick charging too.
The Huawei P10 ticks all the boxes for a high-end phone, though you’ll pay less than you might expect for it. Even the most demanding of customers will agree that the P10 has a lot to offer and is a great buy.
Performance is always key, so let’s start there. You’re getting octo core processing power on the P10, made up of two quad-core processors running simultaneously (a 2.4 GHz and a 1.8 GHz model). Add in a full 4 GB of RAM and you’re looking at a super responsive phone that’s very fast indeed.
When it comes to operating system, you’re looking at an Android handset. The P10 runs Android Nougat 7.0 out of the box. This gives you the speed and stability of a new OS version, alongside some nice new features. There are more customisation options than ever, as well as bundled notifications for more convenience, and a slew of other new settings to play around with.
What can we say about performance on the P10? It’ simply amazing. There’s no lag, no freezing, even when multi-tasking using CPU intensive apps. The P10 is fast and responsive and more than able to handle anything you throw at it.
Screens are getting bigger and bigger, but the P10 really seems to have found the sweet spot. With a 5.1 inch display you get plenty of room for typing, browsing and watching. Yet the P10 still slides easily into your pocket, and can even be used with one hand, making it both portable and convenient.
Resolution wise you’re getting 1080 x 1920 pixels, so that’s around 432 PPI. That’s not quite 4K, but images are crisp and clean. This is an LCD-Neo display, so the colour resolution is excellent, with both bright and darks reproducing well. And there’s IPS too, so viewing angles are great no matter where you’re standing.
Honestly, no, this isn’t the best-specced screen out there. However, you probably won’t be able to tell the difference; we couldn’t. The display on the P10 is excellent, even when watching HD video, and that’s all that matters.
Moving on to the camera set, and the P10 delivers here. At the front you’re looking at an 8 MP, f/1.9 aperture device. That’s perfect for selfies, and more than adequate for any video calling or Skyping you need to do.
At the rear, you’re getting a dual camera set, so there’s both a monochrome and a colour lens, making for some fantastic shots with the colour lens giving you tones and the monochrome enhancing detail. There’s both a 20 MP and a 12 MP lens, both f/2.2 aperture. You’re also getting dual LED flash, Leica optics, phase detection autofocus, face detection, HDR, and all the other features you expect to see on an excellent camera set.
What’s to say? This camera set is impressive, and will please even the pro photographer. If you’re looking for a mobile that takes great snaps every time, then the Huawei P10 is going to be a fantastic choice!
We don’t have the space to tell you every extra feature on the P10, but there are a couple that deserve mentioning. Firstly, you’re getting tonnes of battery power. The non-removable 3200 mAh battery should be more than enough to last you the day. And when you’re out of juice, there’s quick charging to get you up and running faster than ever.
Huawei has also redesigned the fingerprint scanner. You get the usual scanner, giving you extra security and access to online payment systems that require fingerprints. However, the scanner also functions as a navigation key. You can long hold, short hold and swipe on the scanner, letting you navigate around your phone. This means there’s no need for the traditional three capacitive buttons typically found on a smartphone.

The Huawei P10 is a fantastic choice when it comes to the top end of the market. There’s lots of power and responsiveness here, excellent cameras, a great display, and some nice little tweaks and features as well. Plus, that price point is lower than most other top end phones. If you’re looking for a great piece of tech at prices that don’t break the bank, then the Huawei P10 is for you!
You’re getting all the usual connectivity options: 3G, 4G, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Internally, there’s 32 GB of storage (though a 64 GB version is being marketed in other countries), which should be more than enough for most people. However, there is also an SD card slot so you can add up to 256 GB of extra storage if you should need it.
So, any complaints? Nothing really serious. We did find that the user interface Huawei has added to Android means lots of duplicate apps, but those are fairly easy to deal with. Non-removable batteries are never our favourite, but they have become more or less standard, so we can’t really complain about that. On the whole, the P10 is a great phone, we love it and think you will too. If you want a great piece of kit, then check out the Huawei P10!
