About the Google Pixel 3

Google haven’t been making phones for long, but they’ve already made quite the splash. Featuring a clean version of base Android, Google’s Pixel mobiles are designed to be the epitome of an Android device. But with so many Androids on the market, do we really need a new Pixel? Well, it turns out that we do, especially when it’s packed full of cool new tech.

Why should you want one? Obviously, there’s plenty of power and a nice screen. But there’s also new camera tech, and some nifty extras too. This phone isn’t going to come cheap, but if you’re looking for a pure Android phone, this is amongst the best out there.

Key Features on the Google Pixel 3

When it comes to design, there’s not a lot new on the Pixel 3. It’s the regular candy bar design that we’ve come to know and love, with slim edges and sleek curves. There’s a glass and aluminium design that keeps the 3 lightweight, and it’s surprisingly portable for a phone with this screen size. And perhaps a selling point for some (though a deal breaker for others), there’s no top of the screen notch on this model.

Looks aside, you’re getting solid internals here. There’s power, good screen specs, decent cameras, though the spec numbers don’t tell the whole story, since Google have opted to add new tech in rather than just improve already good spec numbers.

The Pixel 3 doesn’t come cheap. It’s actually surprisingly expensive for a phone with these specs. Yet once you’ve used it, you can clearly see why it has such a high price tag. It’s a fantastic phone whose specs really don’t do it justice.

Performance and Power Specs

From the get-go, the Pixel 3 is giving you a ton of power. There’s octo-core processing here, made up of a quad-core 2.5 GHz unit and a quad-core 1.6 GHz model, plus a full 4 GB of RAM. IN layman’s terms that means that the 3 is fast, responsive, and capable of doing pretty much anything you want.

Obviously, this is an Android device. And the exciting news is that you’ll be running the newest Android 9 Pie out of the box. This gives you more security and stability, as well as some cool new features like new gesture input and more efficient battery use.

When it comes to performance it really doesn’t get much better than this. Even hardcore phone users are going to find that the Pixel 3 is lightening fast and able to handle anything that you throw and it.

Display Specs

The Pixel 3 has a very good screen indeed, though we have to admit it’s not the best on the market right now. First up, you get a full 5.5 inches of screen space. That should be more than enough for comfortable typing and viewing. But the 3 is still comfortable to use one handed, and easily slides into a pocket as well.

In terms of resolution you’re looking at 1080 x 2160 pixels, so around 443 PPI. This means that the picture is sharp and clear, and thanks to the P-OLED display it also gets a great colour reproduction. You’re getting the more modern 18:9 aspect ration, and this is Gorilla Glass 5, so there’s less risk of the screen shattering.

Yes, there are better screen specs out there. But the Pixel 3 seems to combine the ideal size and resolution without going overboard. You’ll be hard pressed to see any difference between the display on the Pixel 3 and something with higher resolution.

The Camera Set

First, a word of warning. Camera specs on the Pixel 3 look disappointing. They’re not. What’s important here is really the additional tech that Google have added. That being said, at the front there’s a solid dual selfie cam. That’s made up of two 8 MP lenses, one f/1.8 aperture, the other f/2.2. So you’re going to be getting some awesome sefie shots.

Around at the back, you’re only seeing a single lens 12 MP cam. That’s f/1.8 aperture, 28mm, 1/2.55’’, with optical image stabilisation and dual LED tone flash. But, the Pixel 3 also features a dedicated camera chip, as well as Google’s photo AI system. And this makes this one of the best mobile cameras around. It basically does everything a DSLR camera can, and offers more than most professional cameras without having to change lenses.

It’s hard to get across just how good this camera is, because those spec numbers really don’t tell the whole story. You’ll have to trust on this, but the Pixel 3 has the best mobile camera on shelves right now. Period.

And the Rest…

There’s a lot going on here and we really can’t mention everything, but there are a few things that you should know about the Pixel 3. It is IP68 rated, so it’s dustproof and waterproof in up to 1.5 metres of water for up to thirty minutes.

Battery capacity is solid, with a 2915 mAh battery on board. And you get quick charge tech as well as wireless charging too. There’s a rear mounted fingerprint sensor, but no face ID, which could be a deal breaker.

Sound on the Pixel 3 is awesome, thanks to the dual front mounted speakers. There’s no tinny quality here that we often get on mobile speakers. But there’s also no headphone jack, so you’ll need to go wireless or grab a USB-C to headphone adaptor.

There are three colour versions of the Pixel 3 available: black, white and pink. And there are two internal storage versions: 64 GB or 128 GB. But there’s no SD card slot, so you can’t ad din any extra memory.

Google Pixel 3 Deals

We’ve warned you that the Pixel 3 is pricey, and it is. As a top end phone, you should be able to get the 3 through most major operators, and there should be plenty of contract choices too, which is the good news. The bad news is that if you’re looking to go SIM free then you’re going to be paying about £739 for the 64 GB version, and around £839 for the 128 GB version. On contract, prices should go from about £60 a month or so, with upfront costs going from £0.

For contract shoppers, you’re going to want to look for big data packages. The Pixel 3 does have 4G, so that should be a concern too if you want faster mobile data. If you’re looking to save cash, then you could get away with a cheaper low data contract as long as you’re constantly on a WiFi connection.

As for savings on buying the phone itself, don’t get your hopes up. Google rarely discount their products, and since this is such a new model we’re highly unlikely to see any sales on the Pixel  any time soon. Discounts won’t be likely until mid 2019 when a newer Pixel model is announced. If you’re on a budget, then you might want to consider going for the older Pixel 2, which is still a fantastic little phone.

If you’re in the market for the perfect Android phone, then the Pixel 3 is going to be a great choice. With it’s awesome power specs, superb cameras, and good looking screen, this is everything you could want from a mobile. It might be pricey, but you’ll be getting a fantastic mobile for your money!

Google Pixel 3 Review

We’ll admit to being a fan of Google phones, with their squeaky-clean version of the Android operating system. But the latest Pixel 3 is a clear step in a new direction for the company. We love that it’s not packed with big spec numbers, it’s actually giving us new tech to improve the mobile market. We dig the awesome cameras, we love finally getting wireless charging, and we adore that 5.5-inch display. True mobile aficionados are going to love the Pixel 3 just as much as we do!
