About the Google Pixel 2 XL

Google have only been producing their own brand phones for a couple of generations, but the original Pixel phones were huge sellers. It’s easy to see why, with the combination of great specs, stock Android, and good looks that the Pixel offered. But is it really time for a second generation Pixel already? Google thinks so, and the improved specs on the Pixel 2 XL just go to prove that they’re correct.

Why should you want a Pixel 2 XL? It’s that huge HD screen that’s going to be the big selling point here, but this also has some excellent cameras, as well as plenty of power and loads of special features too. If you want the best of the best when it comes to Android phablets, then the Pixel 2 XL has to be top of your list.

Key Features on the Google Pixel 2 XL

The Pixel 2 XL is very minimalistic, and that’s a good thing. The profile is slim, lines are sharp, and there’s an overall sexy look about the device. Google have kept the glass and metal build of the original Pixel, but changed the design ethic so that the phone looks more complete somehow, the lines just flow better. Hand feel is amazing, this is a real premium product and build quality is solid and robust.

Looks aside, there are some awesome  internals going on here. Plenty of power, obviously, cameras that are as good as if not better than the top rated ones on the original Pixel, and, of course, that stunningly huge high definition display.

This is unmistakably a top end flagship device, and it’s got a price tag to match. You’re definitely getting what you pay for here though, this is one of the best Android devices around at the moment and it’s going to satisfy even the most demanding user.

    Power and Performance Specs

Let’s start off with performance, since this is the key factor in a top end phone. The Pixel 2 XL runs awesome octo core processing power (made up of a quad core 2.35 GHz and a quad core 1.9 GHz model) alongside 4 GB of RAM. That means it’s not just fast, it’s also extremely responsive and excellent at multi tasking as well.

As a Google phone it should be no surprise that this is an Android. The Pixel 2 XL will be one of the first phones shipping with the newest Android 8.0 Oreo straight out of the box. This gives you a few new features (particularly when it comes to notifications and settings), as well as added security and stability. This is also stock Android, so unlike other phones where manufacturers put their own spin on Android, you’ll have a pure, intuitive experience with little bloatware.

You’re going to be looking for top performance at this price point, and the Pixel 2 XL isn’t going to let you down. It’s speedy, responsive, and a flat out pleasure to use, it’ll do anything you need and more.

    Display Specs

If you’re looking at getting the Pixel XL, then the display is almost certainly the reason why. You get a massive 6 inch screen here. That gives you more than enough room for typing on screen, and for comfortable viewing as well. Though you won’t be using the XL one handed, or slipping it into a shirt pocket.

Resolution wise you’re getting super HD with 1440 x 2880 pixels, so about 538 PPI. Pictures are astoundingly sharp, clear and well defined. This is also a p-OLED screen so colour reproduction is second to none as well, with bright whites and dark blacks. Finally, this is an always on screen, which means you can check the time or notifications just by glancing at your phone (you can turn this option off if you like though).

Mobile displays are getting better and better, and this isn’t quite the top specced display that we’ve ever seen, but it’s very close. Picture just look incredible, and the screen on the Pixel 2 XL is a dream to look at.

    The Camera Set

With the original Pixel offering up some of the best mobile cameras around, we’d expect nothing less from the Pixel 2 XL. And the XL definitely delivers here. The front camera is an 8 MP, f/2.4 aperture, 1/3.2” affair that takes great selfies and is perfect for video calls.

Around at the back you’re getting a 12.2. MP, f/1/8 aperture, 1/2.6” sensor cam. In basic terms that means amazing pictures for you. There’s also optical image stabilisation, phase detection and laser auto focus, plus all the obvious features like face detection, HDR, geo tagging, panorama mode, and dual LED flash.

The bottom line here is that the Pixel 2 XL takes incredible pictures, finely detailed, perfect colour reproduction, and clear, sharp focus, even in low light conditions. If you’re looking to take great snaps, then the Pixel 2 XL is for you.

    And All the Extras…

The Pixel 2 XL is no regular phone, and as a flagship mobile comes loaded with special features. There are too many for us to mention all of them, but there are a few stand outs. First up, this is a water resistant device. The IP67 rating means that the phone can be in water of up to a metre in depth for up to thirty minutes.

The fingerprint sensor is rear mounted, which is more convenient than the traditional front mounted sensor, and means added security as well as access to online payment systems that require fingerprint authentication. You’ll get USB-C fast charging as well. Do note, however, that the Pixel 2 XL does NOT have a headphone jack (though it does have a converter so you can plug regular headphones into the charging port).

Finally, there is now a new way to interact with your mobile. By lightly squeezing the sides of the device you’ll automatically launch Google Assistant. This, of course, saves precious time, and is kind of neat as well.

    Google Pixel 2 XL Review

The Google Pixel 2 XL is one of the best phablets on the market right now. With its stunning huge display, loads of power, great cameras and innovative special features, this is a serious contender for best phone of the year. If you’re looking for a high end phablet, then the Pixel 2 XL is going to be a fantastic choice.

In terms of connectivity you’re getting 3G, 4G, WiFi, and the new Bluetooth 5.0 standard. You’ll also get the choice of two Pixel 2 XL versions: 64 GB of internal storage or 128 GB. However, there’s no SD card slot here, so you won’t be adding any extra memory.

Right, so, what don’t we like? That’s a tough question, because we really love the Pixel 2 XL. We’re not huge fans of dropping the headphone jack, but it’s becoming more common and the device does come with a charge port to headphone converter. We’d prefer an SD card slot, but most people store data on the cloud nowadays, so this isn’t the deal breaker that it used to be. On the whole, we adore this device, and we think that you will too. Want the best Android phablet around? Then check out the Google Pixel 2 XL!
