Top end phones tend to be very similar these days: big, black rectangles. But Samsung have given us something a little different with the Galaxy S6 Edge. This is a truly innovative device, and definitely unique. Which is just as well, since Samsung have a lot to make up for after a couple of so-so releases in the last two years. The S6 Edge could well be all it takes to get Samsung back on the most desirable hand set list though.
What’s to love about it? Everything. No, seriously. From that huge, top of the line screen to the incredible processing power and everything in between, Samsung have skimped on nothing with their new flagship line. If you’re in the market for the best of the best when it comes to mobiles, then the Galaxy S6 Edge is everything you could want and more.
In looks the Galaxy S6 Edge is unmistakably Samsung and yet different. This is a full metal, unibody design, unusual for the manufacturer, and the build quality just shines through. That screen curves all the way around the sides of the front panel, meeting a metal rim and then a glass back plate. It’s sleek, it’s stylish, it’s beautiful. Fitting perfectly into the palm of the hand, despite its screen size, the S6 Edge is pure premium mobile.
Under that skin you’re looking at a powerhouse of a phone. There’s serious power here, the S6 Edge being one of the fastest mobiles around. Throw in a couple of decent cameras, a whole heap of special features, and you’ve got an awesome device, one that’s sure to please even the most demanding of users.
Samsung have finally given us what we’ve been asking for: a metal build phone that has the design credentials to match the might of the internal specs. The Galaxy S6 Edge is innovative, beautiful, powerful, and really everything that you could hope for from a top end phone.
Before we get to that screen, let’s take a minute to talk about what’s driving the S6 Edge. The S6 is an octo core model. Yes, you read that right. There are two quad core processors on board, one 2.1 GHz and one 1.5 GHz. Combine those with a huge 3 GB of RAM and you’re looking at speed, responsiveness and serious might. The S6 Edge has some of the best CPU power around, and it’s lightening fast.
As you’d expect, this is an Android, as most Galaxys are. The S6 Edge runs the latest 5.0 Lollipop Android version out of the box. For you that means the customisation options and intuitiveness that you love about Android, coupled with more security and some neat new features. The ability to keep separate work and personal profiles on your mobile is one of our favourite new abilities with 5.0.
If you’re talking performance, the S6 Edge is pretty close to unbeatable. These are some serious internal specs, and they show. Whatever you’re doing, whether browsing twenty open internet tabs or playing high end, CPU intensive games, the S6 Edge is more than capable of giving you the speed and responsiveness that you need.
The display is what makes the S6 Edge really unique. Curving around the long edges of the front panel, the Edges allow you to see an alarm clock, a newsfeed, who’s called, whatever you like. You can also use one of the Edges as a control panel, meaning that you can display music or camera controls there, leaving your main screen uncluttered. The display is a full 5.1 inches, which is a fair size. Typing and viewing is great, though one handed use is a little difficult.
It’s not all about size though. The resolution on the S6 Edge is amazing. You’re looking at 1440 x 2560 pixels (a PPI of around 577), plus this is a Samsung Super AMOLED display. Combined those two things mean clear, sharp lines, and true, deep colour reproduction. From the blackest of blacks to bright, clear reds and blues, picture quality on the S6 Edge is excellent.
Whether you’re high end gaming, picture editing, or just checking out an HD video or two, the display on the S6 Edge is incredible. And those Edges just give you more options when it comes to how you use your phone. Given that the main selling point of the Edge is the curved screen it’s no surprise that Samsung have focussed on making it brilliant, but the truth is that they’ve succeeded. This is one of the best displays around.
The Galaxy S6 Edge is also pretty well kitted out in the camera department, though we’ll be honest and say that these aren’t the highest resolution cameras around. The first, front camera is 5 MP, which is fairly high resolution for video chatting or taking the odd pic of yourself. More than good enough for Facebook!
At the rear you’re looking at a 16 MP camera, which is a little lower than the 21 MP or so we’re starting to see on high end phones. But MP aren’t everything. The S6 Edge sports an f1.9 aperture, which means the camera can capture more light. In essence, that makes the S6’s camera one of the best low light mobile photography options around. Plus you get all the extras: LED flash, optical image stabilisation, face recognition, and auto focus.
Picture taking on the S6 Edge is simple, given the intuitive camera app, and the resulting pics are very good indeed. If you’re looking for something that’s going to give you great shots, with little hassle, then the S6 Edge is going to be a great choice.
We can’t possibly talk about every special feature on the S6 Edge, since it’s loaded down with them. But there are a few things that are worth a mention. You will find the heart rate monitor and fingerprint scanner that were debuted on the S5 (though the scanner is now press to scan, more reliable than the old swipe scan model). Do note that unlike the S5 the S6 is NOT waterproof, however.
We’re loving the new quick launch camera option too. Just press the home key twice and the camera app opens in less than a second, no matter which screen you happen to be on. Very handy for taking pics on the run.
Finally, the S6 Edge also supports wireless charging. This will allow you to charge your phone through the air from anywhere that has a wireless charging spot. This can come in pretty handy, since it means you don’t need to carry your charger around all the time…

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is absolutely innovative, but it’s also a great phone, even if you take the curved screen out of the equation. Loaded down with awesome internal specs and great special features, the S6 Edge is a behemoth of a device, and one that is a serious competitor for best mobile on shelves.
You’ll be getting 4G, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth, of course. But you should know that unlike most Galaxy models the S6 Edge does not have an SD card slot, so you won’t be able to add extra memory. Instead, Samsung will be retailing 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB versions of the device, with larger memory models costing more.
So, what don’t we like about the S6 Edge? Hmm. We’re not big fans of the non removable battery, or the lack of SD card slot. But those are small things, and really the price we have to pay for having a unibody design. On the whole, we were very impressed with the S6 Edge and there really wasn’t much that we’d change. The Galaxy S6 Edge is an awesome phone, and one that top end customers are going to love.
