Every now and again we see something truly new on the mobile market, and that’s exactly what the Galaxy S6 Edge is all about. It’s innovative, it’s cool, and it’s awesomely powerful as well. And that’s just as well, because Samsung is looking to make up for a couple of mediocre flagship phones. The S6 Edge could be the mobile that puts Samsung back on the most wanted list though.
Why should you want one? Well, that curved screen is pretty special, in fact the whole display has amazing specs. But there’s lots of power as well, and a couple of decent cameras thrown in for good measure. If you want a top of the line device that’s unique as well as high performance, then the Galaxy S6 Edge could be exactly what you’re looking for.
The S6 Edge truly looks the part. It’s full metal build, with a glass plated back, and the screen curves all the way around the long edges of the phone. And yet this isn’t an unwieldy device, it sits nicely in the hand, and whilst the edges are quite sharp, the corners are nicely curved. All in all this is a premium mobile, and that’s obvious from first glance.
Getting to the internals, the S6 Edge really has it all. This device has some of the highest specs available, and performance is a dream. There are lots of nice added features, and nice photo taking abilities too. What does the S6 Edge not have? This is maybe as close to perfection as a mobile phone can get.
Top of the line mobiles these days are all so similar, and the S6 Edge is a real ground breaker. Sure, it looks different, sure, it’s got unique features. But more than that it’s also got top end specs. This is a mobile that has it all, and one that will please absolutely anyone.
Let’s start out by dealing with the heart of the matter: processing power. The S6 Edge is an octo core device. It runs two quad core processors side by side, one of which is 2.1 GHz, the other 1.5 GHz. There’s a massive 3 GB of RAM as well. That all adds up to serious power, and the S6 Edge is super fast and super responsive as well.
This is an Android phone, as are all Samsung Galaxys. The S6 Edge runs the newest 5.0 Lollipop OS version out of the box. That gives you plenty of security, some nice new features and better graphics, and of course all the customisation options and all the intuitiveness that we love about Android.
The Galaxy S6 Edge has awesome performance, and that’s what we’d expect at this price point. From multi tasking to running CPU intensive tasks like picture editing, the S6 Edge isn’t going to let you down. This is a true powerhouse of a phone.
The screen is the S6’s big selling point, and what a screen it is. It’s a 5.1 inch display that curves neatly over the long edges of the phone. This Edge allows you to do all kinds of things, from using the side of the phone as a clock or newsfeed, to answering calls, controlling music or using the camera app all without having to touch whatever’s showing on the phone’s main screen.
Display wise you’re looking at a signature Samsung Super AMOLED screen, so colour resolution is excellent. Plus, this is a 1440 x 2560 pixel display, giving around 577 PPI, so the picture is sharp with great clarity. Picture quality on the S6 is fantastic, and Edge or no Edge the S6 has one of the best displays on the market.
From HD video to web browsing, the display on the S6 is pure perfection. This is as good as screens get. The Edge adds a whole new dimension to the phone, and proves to be very useful indeed, especially if you like to be able to game, work or read whilst still listening to and controlling your music.
As we’ve come to expect these days the Galaxy S6 Edge has two cameras, front and rear. The front camera is a satisfying 5 MP device, so you’ll get some decent selfies, as well as very good quality video calling and Skyping. The main event is around the back though…
The rear camera on the S6 Edge is 16 MP, so it can capture plenty of detail. But there’s also an f1.9 aperture, which means that the S6 Edge can take great pics even when light conditions aren’t perfect. Low light photography is an area where mobile cameras often fail, but that’s not going to be a problem here. Then there’s the LED flash, optic image stabilisation, auto focus, and all the other features that you’d expect on a top end mobile camera.
The S6 Edge takes some very good pictures. The low light ability is especially worth considering. Whether you’re a pro or just like taking the occasional snap, the Galaxy S6 Edge is going to be a sure hit when it comes to photo quality.
There are so many special features crammed into the S6 Edge that we couldn’t possibly mention all of them. But there are three points that you really need to know about on this device. The first is that the camera app now has quick launch. Hitting the home button twice immediately launches the camera no matter which screen you’re on, which is handy for taking pics on the go.
Just like the older Galaxy S5, the S6 Edge has a built in heart rate monitor. It also has a fingerprint scanner for additional security, and this is a more reliable press to scan device, rather than the older swipe version. Do note that unlike the S5 the S6 Edge is NOT waterproof, however.
Last, but not least, the S6 Edge supports wireless charging. If you frequent places that support wireless charging (and the list of these is constantly growing) then you’ll be able to get away with not carrying your phone charger wherever you go!

Innovation can be gimmicky, but that’s not the case with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. The curved screen is a real boon, and has multiple uses. Add in huge power, decent cameras, stylish new design and a host of extras and you’re looking at a real high end powerhouse of a mobile.
The S6 Edge supports 4G, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth. However, you’ll notice the lack of an SD card slot, which means you can’t add any external storage space. Samsung will be selling 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB versions of the S6 Edge, with larger memory models costing a little extra.
Honesty time. What didn’t we like? If we’re nit picking we’ll say that the lack of removable battery is a little annoying, as is the lack of SD card slot. But in a metal unibody design phone these are sacrifices that we’re prepared to accept. The bottom line is that the Galaxy S6 Edge is an awesome phone, and a excellent addition to the Samsung family. This will be one purchase that you’re not going to regret.
